ELEVATOR- SAFETY APPLIANCE.
Application filed November 15, 1821. Serial No. 515,371.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALLACE E] DAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city. andcounty of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and-use ful Improvements in Elevator SafetyAppliances, of which the following is a speci fication;
This invention relates to automatic elevators and particularly pertains to a non- -interference control system therefor.
In the operation of most automatic elevatorsat the present time a prospective passenger presses "a floor button which brings the elevator to therespeotive floor and per mits the passenger to pass through the floor door and'theelevator car door thus gaining access to the car after which the passenger 'pressesone of the floor buttons within the car thus determining the destination of the elevator. If it so happens that aperson at another floor pressesthe'fioor button before the occupant of the car has time to press the elevatorbutton the control of the ele vator is taken away'from the occupant of the car and 'iinless he has the presence of mind to press the emergency button the car.
will be under the control of a prospective passenger at another floor. It is the principal object of the present invention therefore to providea system of automatic elevator control whereby the prospective passenger will have complete control of the elevator from the time he enters the elevator car until the time he leaves the elevator car at his destination.
The present invention contemplates the us of the usual floor button circuit for producing initial operation of the car safety circuits'for'preventing a carfrom leaving a floor without safety'and the floor button circuits controlled from within the car. In
addition to these circuits, a noninterference control circuit is provided which automatically operates when the elevator door is opened to render the floor button circuits incomplete until thepassenger leaves the car and closes the door. V
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing in 'posedl at every floor;
which the figure is a view-of the wiring diagram disclosing the. present .inver on and ts relation to the automaticelevamncon 1 1 ys m Referring more particularly to the drawing, lQindicatesinain feed wire connecting with a contact arm: 11 of a mainrontrol circuit breaker A. This feed wire also connects with a wire 12 communicating with the coil of a magnet 13. The circuit through this magnet is completed along a wire 14 through aseries of floor door contact switches 15.. It is to be understood that these switches are all in series and are disp sedqne at e h, or so a e Open of the door will open the switch and break the circuit through the magnet 13. The cir- ,cuit iscompletedalong a conductor 16 to the opposit teed wi e, h re n ica e at 17 I wi l hiiS' be evident, that the circuit of the h andthus establishes a circuit from conductor along wire 19 to: wire 20,. These wires are electrically connected to the army 21. The circuit then continues along wire 22 to contacts 23, carried by the arm of the car button circuit breaker C. The fixed ene'of these contacts connects with a wire 2% forming a common lead wire to a set of floor switches 25, one of-which switches is dis- These. switches are of course provided with separate lead wires 26 connecting with magnet coils 27 which coils act upon switches 28 to close a circuit through a lead wire 29,. in manner which will be hereinafter described.
The opposite poles of the various magnets 27 are provided with conductors 30 lead: ing to separate brushes 31 of a rotary switch un'it 32. This unit,as commonly built, has contact segments 33 and 34 through which circuits may be completed to either a IDown direction magnet 35 along a conductoi' 36 or an Up direction magnet 37 leading to the normally engaged contacts 4.0 closed by the control arm 11 of circuit breaker D, the circuit being completed to the feed wire 17 along a conductor 42.
The control system is, of: course, fitted with the usual emergency control switch. 43 and the car door contact switch 14, The switch 41-3 may be actuated by a button within the car while the switch 44L is normally closed when the door of the car is closed. These switches are included in the following circuit:
From lead wire 10 along the wire iii to conductor 16, from thence to the emergency control switch 43 to the car door switch 44, then along conductor 47 to magnet 18 of the switch D then returning to the negative lead wire along conductor 42.
The motor 48 is provided with reversing switches generally indicated at E. These switches are actuated by the reversing magnets 35 and 37 and are included in a circuit from the lead wire 10 to the normally closed contacts 18 '1 arm 11, from thence to conductor 29 which is the common lead wire to the circuit closing switches actuated by the various magnets 27, the circuit from these magnets being traced through the floor switches.
The circuit breaker C is provided to render the floor buttons inoperative when the floor door has been closed and if the car door is opened. This is included in a circuit from conductor through the norn'ially closed contacts 18 of the control circuit breaker A, then along conductor 19 to conductor 20. The circuit then coutinues through the normally opened contacts as) of arm 11, to conductor 50, the normally open contacts 19 being then closed by the breaking of the circuit through the magnet -18 by the opening of the car door and the operation of the contact switch 141:. This wire connects with a wire 51 leading to a magnet 52. The circuit is conmletcd through conductor 1-2 to the lead wire 1?. This action will separate the contacts 23 and will bring contacts into engagement.
The separation of contacts 23 will break the tloor button circuit while the contact oi? members 53 will permit a new circuit to be later established when the car floor button is pressed. This will take place from wire 10 through contacts 18 to wire 1.), 20 through conductor 5 and to coil 62. This establishes and maintains an independent circuit for magnet 52.
In operation of the present invention it will be assumed that the car is above the lirst floor and a passenger is on first floor and wishes to be carried to the fourth floor. .In that event the following circuits will be established and broken. It is to be understood that the floor door circuit and the car door circuit are both normally energizcd; the first of these circuits may be traced as follows:
The current passes along the lead wire 11) to the wire 12, then through the magnet 13 to energize it and normally close the cir cuit through contacts 18. The current irom the magnet will then pass along wire 1-1; to the tloor door contacts 15. These contact; switches are normally closed and are wired in series. The circuit is then completed along wire 16 to the lead wire 17.
The normally closed car door and emergency switch circuit passes along wire 10, then along wires and 46 to the car emer gency switch 43, then through the car door contact switch 1 1 and along the wire 47, through the magnet 48 to the wire 1-2 and then to the lead wire 17. This will encrgize magnet 18 and hold the contacts -11) closed while separating contacts 419.
The car may then be brought to the lloor by pressing the first floor button. This will complete a circuit from the positive lead 10 to contacts 18, thence along wires 19 and 20 to wire 22 which connects with the movable contact member 23. This member is normally in engagement with the fixed contact member 23 through which the circuit passes along wire 24: to the floor button and thenv along its respective conductor 26 to a con trol switch 28. From thence along a conductor 30 to its brush 31 making electrical connection with wire 36 through the contact segment 33. The current then passes through the 'coil ot the Down direction switch, and is completed along the rc turn wire 39 to contacts 410, from thence to conductor 42 and the lead wire 17. The completion of this circuit will energize the proper coil 27 thereafter directly establishing a circuit from the wire 26 to the lead wire 29.
The elevator operating circuit will then be held. closed while the elevator moves to the first floor. The floor door is then opened. This will break the floor door ciw cuit, previously described. and will docnergize magnet 13, releasing arm 11 and sop: ating contacts 18. The main elevator control circuit will then be interrupted The car door then. opened thus (hi-(new gixing magnet =13 which will release the arm "1-1 and separate contacts 10 at the same time bringing contacts 4-9 into engagement.
The door door may then be closed and this will inunediately close the floor door switch 15, re-energizing magnet 13 and partially re-establishing the control circuits, at
the same time a noninter:t'erence circuit will be established as follows:
From lead wire 10 to contacts 18, thence along wire 19 to conductor 20, then through contacts to the wire 50, from thence through the wire 51 to the magnet 52, thereafter returning to the other lead wire 1? loo lflll and it will-beimpossible for a'person at any floor to obtain control of the car. I The car door is then closed-thus completing the original car door and emergency contact circuit previously described. One of the car buttons may be then pushed to close a circuit and elect the destination of the car as for example when pushing the button for the fourth floor the following circuit will be completed:
From conductor through contact 18,
to wires 19, and 54;, and through magnet 62 to wire 60 and to the elevator car floor button switch. After passing through the switch which has been closed the circuit is completed through a wire 26 to the proper magnet 2?, switch 28, then along wire 80 to its brush 30 and through the floor control switch 32 to the wire 38 and the Up control magnet 37 thereafter returning along wire 39 through the contacts 40 and wire 2 to the lead wire 17.
The energization of magnet 62 will bring its contacts into engagement and will establish the circuit through the magnet 52 maintaining the contacts 53 closed and the contacts 23 open, which, as previously explained, break the floor button switch circuit and prevent anyone from obtaining control of the car. It will thus be impossible for control of the elevator to be taken. away from the operator even though he should let a passenger out at any floor. In that event it will be understood that it might be possible for the outer elevator door to be closed before the inner. hen the passenger, reaches the intended floor he will of course close the inner door first and then the outer, this tending to establish the original normal circuits and break ing the non-interference circuits to permit the floor button circuits to be cleared. When the non-interfering circuit is broken the magnets 52 and 62 will be de-energized and the circuits controlled by these magnets will be restored to their normal condition.
It may happen that two passengers are in the elevator and one leaves at a floor while the other remains in the car. In this event the inner elevator car door may possibly be closed before the elevator floor door which would result in re-establishing the control of the car by the floor buttons. These buttons may be instantly rendered inoperative by pressing vthe button of emergency switch 4:; thus placing the car in complete control of the passenger.
It will thus be seen that the apparatus here disclosed will make it possible for a passenger to have complete control of the movement of a car from the time he opens a floor door. to enter until such a timeas he shall successively close the I car. -door and the floor. door upon leaving.
While I have shown the preferred form of my invention as now known to me it will be understood that, various changes might be made in the combination, cons uctioa, a d. rra gem n .1 parts. by
those skilled in-the art without departing from the present invention as claimed.
I Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In an automatic control for elevators having a driving motor, a series of floor buttons, and associated electric circuits, by which the elevator can be brought to a desired floor, a series of car buttons and associated circuits by which a passenger within the car may cause the car to travel to the desired floor, a circuit breaker in the said associated'circuits of the car buttons, and means including an automatically established non-interference circuit having means for operating the said circuit breaker to open the floor button circuits and render the same inoperative from the time a passenger enters a car until he is leaving the car.
2. An automatic elevator control including the combination with an elevator car adapted to travel along an elevator shaft andto stop at various floors, the elevator car being equipped with a normally closed door and the elevator shaft being provided with normally closed doors at the various floors, means for driving the elevatorha normally closed electric floor door circuit adapted to be broken when a floor door is opened, a normally closed car door circuit adapted to be broken when a car door is opened, normally'opened floor door button circuits adapted to be selectively closed at each floor to cause the elevator to travel to the respective floors, a normally opened car button circuit adapted to be closed to cause the car to travel to a selected floor, a circuit breaker in the car button circuit and a non-interference circuit having means for operating the said circuit breaker to open the floor button circuits and render the same inoperative from the time a passenger enters the car until he is leaving the car.
3. An automatic elevator control including the combination with an elevator car adapted to travel along an elevator shaft and to stop at various. floors, the elevator car being equipped with a normally closed door and the elevator shaft being provided with normally closed doors at the various floors, of means for driving the elevator, a normally closed electric floor door circuit adapted to be broken when a floor door is opened, a normally closed car door circuit adapted to be broken when a car door is opened, normally open floor button circuits adapted to be selectively closed at each floor to cause the elevator to travel to the respective floors, a normally open car button circuit adapted to be closed to cause the car to travel to a selected floor and automatic operating means including 21.
