Application filed September 14', -,1821. S.eria-1-No.-.5U0,533.
To a7] who-m may concern:
Be it known that I, Crmnnns HENRY Lyon, a subject of the Kingdom of Great Britain, residing at Dorridge Croft, Dorridge, Warwickshire, England, have invented certain new and useful In'iprovements in or Relating to Portable Receptacles Suitable for Containing and Displaying Articles Such as Travelers Samples, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprises improvements in or relating to the portable receptacles suitable for containing and displaying articles such as travelers samples.
The present invention comprehends a receptacle containing a series of trays or the equivalent, which trays or the equiva lent are adapted when the receptacle is being carried to be superposed and which trays'are adapted readily to be displaced into positions according to which they are Ofl'setted laterally in order to disclose the contents of the whole of the trays.
The displacement of the trays from their collapsed position to their exhibiting position and/or vice versa may be adapted to be effected simply by the displacement of a hinged lid or part of the case within which the trays are normally contained.
In order that this invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice, reference may be had to the appended explanatory sheet of drawings, upon which Figure l is a perspective view illustrating a sample case according to the present invention partly open.
Figure 2 illustrates the sample case shewn in Figure l entirely open.
In a convenient embodiment of the present invention represents the body of a travelers sample case open at one side and having a lid or cover Z) hinged at its lower edge, and a secondhinged portion 0 of L section hinged at its upper edge, which closure portion 0 is adapted to close the case at the top and which lid or closure portion 7) is adapted to close the case at the side.
Located within the case is a nest of trays (Z, c, g, h which when the case is in its collapsed condition are adapted to be superposed as illustrated in Figure 1. These trays are adapted to .be displaced into the positions shewn in Figure 2 automatically upon the opening of the member 0 and to be restored to their superposed positions by the closing of said member 0. These functions are obtained by virtue of the linkage which is illustrated; between each pair of superposed pair of trays there is a parallel link mechanism at each end of the trays. The parallel links between the uppermost tray (1 and the next tray 0 are designated 7?, j, and the link j is extended downwardly to constitute the rear link between the tray 0 and the tray f. The other link 10 between the tray 6 and the tray f is extended downwardly to constitute the rear link between the tray 7 and the tray o. As illustrated this arrangement is continued until the bottom tray is arrived at, which bottom tray It is connected to the. tray above the same by a fore link Z.
For convenience of connection of the links to the trays, plates or strips m are fastened to the extremities of the latter as for instance by rivetin these plates or strips constitute convenient means by which the links may be pivotally connected to the respective trays.
Between the closure member 0 and the uppermost tray cl a hinged link or stay a is provided. When the closure member is lifted or displaced in a clockwise direction the central articulation of the stay a is adapted to descend so that the stay is broken, and the then substantially vertical side of the part 0 is adapted to engage with the rear of the uppermost tray and to displace it forwardly. This forward displacement of the uppermost tray brings about by virtue of the linkage above described, the collective and appropriate rearward displacement of the other trays until they assume the position shewn in Figure l, which position they occupy when the closure member 0 assumes its entirely closed position. The main closure member 6 can then be closed so that its flange embraces the closure portion 0- and said lid or closure member I), can then be locked to retain and secure the entire mechanism of the receptacle.
In the reverse operation after opening the lid it is only necessary to raise the closure portion 0 when by virtue of the jointed stay a the uppermost tray cl is drawn rearwardly with the result that the lower trays are advanced forwardly into the position shewn in Figure 2.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A case having a hinged lid, and also having a closure at one side, a plurality of superposed trays, lazy tongs links connecting said trays together, and links pivotally connected to the lid and also pivotally connected to the uppermost tray, whereby When the hinged lid is raised and turned in one direction the trays are moved in substantialand in vertical relation one immediately 15 below another.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
CHARLES HENRY LYDE.
