LOCK DEVICE FOR DOORS.
Application filed October 9, 1922. Serial No. 593,281.

Be it known that I, CARL HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allentown, in the county of l ehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock Devices for Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention. relates "tolocking devices for doors and more particularly to door bolts, an important object of the invention being to provide a simple and efficient belt for locking the door in a partially opened position as well as when fully closed, the improved device including means whereby the bolt may be coupled with a mechanism for retracting it from its locking position when the door is closed by means of a key from the opposite side of the door.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a door and its cas ing with my improved lock in position for locking the door fully closedand coupled with key controlling means opening it from the outside. Figure 2 is a similar view but withthe bolt disengaged from the key'controlling means. Figure 3 is a view showing the lock in position for holding the door partially opened, parts being in. section. My improved device includes a casingl appropriately secured to the door and having a slideway 2 for a spring controlled bolt 3 which. has at one end a latchhead 4; with a laterally projecting stud 5 and at its other end this bolt is bent at rightangles to itself, as at- 6, being preferably providedwvitlra head 7, which with such right angular portion forms a handle for operating the bolt. Outstanding spaced apart ears 13 formed on the plate 12 constitute the support for an auxiliary keeper 14 which is shaped from a single piece of metal bent back upon itself so as to form a loop, its ends being ivoted to the ears. A means by which the bolt may be op-Q erated from outside the door when positioned for that purpose includes a lock mechanism such as is conventionally shown and which is preferably of the cylinder type with a coupling. This coupling includesa base plate 22 which connected by screws .43 through part of the lock and serves as means for retaining the whole in position. The base plate has a central aperture which receivesthe rear wardly projecting screw threaded post 24- of a rotatable plate 25, a nut 26 holding the rotatable plate in position on the base plate. The post of the rotatable plate is: bifurcated, as at 27, to receive the stem 28 of thelock mechanism. The rotatable plate 25 has a single aperture '29 of slightly larger diameter than the head of the screws 28, this aperture forming the means by which access is had to the screw holes 22 for placing the lock mechanism and in the normal position of the parts the aperture of the rotatable plate lies awayfrom both the screw holes of the base plate. VVhen'access is to be had turned first in one direction and then in another (see the arrows in Figure 2) so that one screw at a time is in line with this integrally formed with the rotatable plate to one side of its center and extending at right angles thereto is a wing 30. WVhen the right angular handle 6 of the bolt is in its normal position it will lie in parallelism with and adjacent to the wing 30, its spring tending to hold it in this up right position so that any turning movement'of the rotatable plate will. cause a retraction of the bolt through the action of the wing on'the handle.

Turning of the rotatable plate 25 through the instrumentality of a key inserted in the lock mechanism will effect a retraction of the latch, permitting opening of the door. Manifestly the bolt may be readily Withdrawn from locking position from the same side of the V door on which it is placed by pressure applied to the handle 6. The spring which acts to hold the bolt outwardly also serves to normally maintain the handle 6 in engagement with the wing 30. If it be desired for ventilating or other purposes, and my improved lock adapted to hold a door in such partially opened position and to lock it against unauthorized opening. ,The auxiliary keeper ll is turned on its pivot to the position shown in Figure 3, and the bolt is turned from the normal position with its handle upstanding to that where it is directly opposite which brings about engagement between stud and the wall of the slot 15. The handle 6 is thus held to its position by the buttonBl. So placed, the bolt acts to hold the door in the partially opened position and looks it so that it cannot be opened from the outside.
I claim as my invention:
1,. A fastening device for a door including a rotai able sliding bolt, a keeper with which said bolt engages, a key operated mechanism, and means adaptable upon rotation of the bolt for coupling said bolt and said key operated mechanism at will to permit retraction of the bolt from said keeper by manipulation of said key mechanism. 1
2. A fastening device for a door including a sliding spring actuated bolt, a keeper with which said bolt engages, a key operated mechanism, means rendered effective bythe spring actuated character of said bolt for normally coupling said bolt and said key operated mechanism, and means for. rendering said last mentioned means ineffective.
' 3. A fastening device for a door including a sliding spring actuatedbolt, a keeper with which said bolt engages, a key operated mechanism, and rotatable means normally coupling said bolt and said key operated mechanism, and a member for engaging and holding said bolt to render said coupling means ineffective.
4:. A fastening device for a door including a spring actuated bolt, a keeper with which said bolt engages, key operated mechanism, a rotatable plate coupled with said key mechanism and having a wing, means whereby'said wing and said bolt may be coupled for operation of said bolt by said key operated mechanism, and a member cooperating with said last mentioned means to prevent coupling between said means and said wing. i
5. A fastening device for a door including a slidable spring actuated bolt, said bolt having a right angular portion, a keeper with which said bolt engages, a key operated mechanism,a rotatable plate coupled with said key mechanism and having a wing designed to engage said right angular port'ion oi. said bolt to withdraw said bolt when said key operated mechanism is manipulated, said right angular portion being disengagable from said wing and a button cooperating when the wing.
6. A fastening devicefor a door including a slidable and rotatable spring actuated bolt, said bolt having a right angular portion, a keeper with which said bolt engages, a key operated mechanism, a'rotatable plate having a centrally disposed bifurcated post on one side and a wing on its opposite side, said wing being designed to engage said right angular portion of said bolt when the latter is rotated in one direction, means connecting said rotatable plate and said key operated mechanism comprising a base plate having an aperture through which said post extends, and screws connecting said base platewith said key mechanism, said rotatable-plate having an aperture through which access may be had to said screws, and a button for engaging and holding said right angular portion when the latter is disengaged from said wing. 1

A fastening device for a door including a rotatable sliding bolt, a keeper with which said bolt engages, a key operated mechanism, means adaptable upon rotation of the bolt for coupling said bolt and said key operated mechanism at will to permit retraction of the bolt from said keeper by manipulation of said key mechanism, and means independent of said key operated mechanism and its bolt coupling means for rendering saidlast mentioned means ineffective. v I
