Application filed July 1, 1924. s mi N... vasgasaf I To all-whom may .Be it known that I, LiioN PA EnTnA ject of the Kingof Great Britain, residing at St. George de Champlain, in the Provinceof 5 Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bridle Bits; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription of-the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and .use'the same. I v
Thepresent invention pertains to a novel bridle bit adapted for use with the harness,
for a horse. i As is well known by drivers of horses, when the driving reins are pulled for the purpose of drawing the bitv into the corners of the horses mouth, the horse grasps the bit in his teeth and prevents it from accomplishing the desired object. The present inven tion aims to overcome this difliculty and ac-' cordingly provides for a bit proper or mouth piece which cannot be grasped in the teeth of thehorse. In theaccomplishment of this object, the invention comprises a shell adapted to enclose the mouth piece. The cheek pieces are attached to the ends of the mouth piece and support the shell for movement with relation, thereto. Thus, the horse can -clench only the shell 'inhis teeth, and the mouth piece together with the cheek pieces are drawn inwardly when the driving reins are pulled. 'When the reins are released, the
yielding connection between the shell andthe cheek pieces operates to return the mouth piece into the shell. 1 g The invention is fully disclosed in the following description and in the accompanying drawings in which:
- Figure 1 is a side view of a horse, showing thedevice applied;
Figure 2 is a side elevation ofthe device; Figure 3 is (a similar elevation showing the cheek pieces and mouth piece drawn inwardly;
Figure 4 is a front elevation of the device partly in section;
Figure 5 is a section of the device in extended position; vand, i I
Figure 4:. 1 Reference will now be had to these views by means of like characters which are em- 1" ployed to corresponding parts i 1, holding the latter parallel to oneanother the-rods; 8, engaging the heads 10 thereof thehorse grasps the shell 12 in his teeth for into the shell under the action of the springs 11.
fragmentary longitudinal g 1 cheek pieces secured at the ends thereof, and
Figure 6 1s a section on the line 6+6 of.
throughout. I g c The cheek pieces of the device are indicated by the'numeral 1 and; are each provided withslots2 and 3 for the accommodation of the cheek strips 4 and the driving reins 5 respectively, as shown in Figure 1. Av niouth piecei6 ha's its ends received in; and secured to theflowenportions of'the pieces andperpendicular to the piece 6, as shown in. Figure 4. Each cheek piece is formed with a tube or sleeve 7 containing a rod 8 formed at its upperend with a disc 9 and at its lower end with a head 10. Each rod is surrounded by an expansion spiral spring 11 engaging the corresponding disc 9 and end" of the mouth piece 6." Y A shell 12 is carried at the lower ends of and adapted'to enclose the mouth piece 6, as
the flow of saliva therethrough.
In use, when the driving reins 5 are pulled,
thepurpose of preventing the mouth piece from being drawn into the corners of his mouth; Since the mouth piece is contained within the shell and movable with relation thereto, the cheek pieces will be drawn in-I ,85
' wardly, carrying with them the mouth piece 6 against the action of the springs 11. The
rods8 remain immovablesince they are held by the shell 12. When the tension 'on the reins 5 is-released, the mouth piece 6 returns While a specific embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, it is to be understoodv that various alterations in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention-as indicated by the appended claims. Having thus fully described the invention,
what I cl'aim as new and desire to protect I00 I by Letters Patent is 1. A. bridle bit comprising amouth piece,
a shell'adaptedto enclose said mouthpiece and yieldably supported by said cheek pieces. 2. A bridlebit comprising a mouth piece, cheek pieces secured at the ends thereof 75 I shown in Figure ,6. The shell isformed with a plurality of transverse apertures 13 for tubes formed on said check pieces, a shell adapted to enclose said mouth piece, rods secured to the ends of said shell and slidably passed through said mouth piece, said rods being yieldably held in said tubes.
3. A bridle bit comprising a mouth piece, cheek pieces secured at the ends thereof, tubes formed on said cheek pieces, a shell adapted to enclose said mouth piece, rods secured to the ends of said shell and slidably passed through said mouth piece into said tubes, discs carried-by said rods Within said tubes, and springs surrounding said rods and engaging said discs and mouthpiece. 4:. A bridle bit comprising a mouth piece, cheek pieces secured at the ends thereof, tubes formed on said cheek pieces, a shell adapted to enclose said mouth piece, rods secured to the ends of said shell and slidably passed through said mouth piece, said rods being yieldably held in said tubes, said shell having a plurality of apertures formed transversely therethrough.
:5. A-bridle bit comprising a mouth piece, cheek pieces secured 1 at the ends thereof, tubes formed on said cheek pieces, a shell adapted'to enclose said mouthpiece, rods secured to the ends of said shell and slidably passed through said mouth piece into said tubes, discs carried by said rods Within said tubes, and springs surrounding said rods and engaging said discs and mouth piece, said shell having a plurality of apertures formed transversely therethrough. I
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
LEON PARENTEAU.
