To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that CHARLES SQUIRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Deans, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Figure Wheeled Toys, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in toys and has for its object to provide a torpedo shaped toy having a nose trigger for releasing the spring controlled figures con tained within the torpedo.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a torpedo shaped toy having spring actuated figures contained therein and means whereby the said spring will be held under compression and means whereby said spring will be released through automatic action of the toy.

With the above and such other objects in view as may hereinafter more fully appear,

Figure 1 is an elevational view of my toy;

Figure 2 is a similar view, certain parts being shown in changed position;

Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional View of the device; and

Figure 4 is a top plan view thereof.

Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the following specification and in the several views in the drawings in which 1 indicates a carriage preferably in the form of a torpedo shaped shell 2, mounted upon wheels 3. The upper part of the body is provided with an opening 4 having a slidable closure 5 held normally open by a spring 6 one end 7 of the spring being secured to the rear edge 8 of the closure 5 and the other end of said spring being secured to the body or rear end 9 of the shell. A hook 10 is provided on the forward end of the door 5 to which the hook end 11 of the link 12 may be attached. The forward end 18 of the link projects through an opening 1 1 in the nose 15 of the shell 2 and projects slightly there beyond to form a trigger whereby when said trigger strikes any object the link 12 will be forced inwardly and its hook end 11 released from the hook 10 of the bar whereby the bar will be drawn open by the spring 6. Mounted in the body of the shell is a tube 16 within which is coiled a spring 17 having a disc 18 secured to its upper convolution. Mounted upon this disc is a stalf 19 carrying the flag 20 also mounted on the disc 18 is a figure of a soldier 21 having a pivoted arm 22 to which is fixed a gun 23. When the disc 18 is compressed down within the tube 16 the arm 22 assumes a vertical position. The disc is held down within the. tube by means of the door 5 against which the staff 19 presses and by means of which the spring 17 is held under compression, an anti-friction roller 24: being mounted upon the upper end of the staff 19 in order to facilitate the opening of the door 5. Then the disc 18 is compressed within the tube 16 and the hooks 10 and 11 caught into engagement with one another the toy is ready for operation which is accomplished by giving the same a push in the direction of any object. lVhen the trigger hits an object the hook 10 will be released from the hook 11, the spring 6 will draw the door 5 open releasing the spring 17 which will shoot the disc and its figures out through the opening 4. As soon as the Figure 21 projects beyond the upper edge 25 of said tube the weight 26 on the rod 27 to which the arm 23 is pivoted, will cause the arm 22 and gun 23 to move to horizontal position whereby the soldier 21 will have the effect of aiming the gun.

Having described my invention that which I claim to be new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:

1. A toy of the character described consisting of a shell mounted upon wheels, fig ures held under spring tension in said shell and means whereby said figures may be re leased, to project out of said shell, said compression means consisting of a horizontally movable door, said door being spring controlled, means for holding said door closed,

A toy of the character described con- 9 sisting of a shell mounted upon wheels, fig ures held under spring tension in said shell and means whereby said figures may be re leased, to project out of said shell, said compression means consisting of a horizontally movable door, said door being spring con trolled, means for holding said door closed, said means consisting of a hook link, means for releasing said hook, said means consisting of a trigger, projecting from said shell, said shell being in the form, of a torpedo, said trigger projecting from the nose of said torpedo, one of said figures being in the form of a soldier, carrying a gun, said soldier having a pivoted arm to which said gun is secured, means whereby said gun may be automatically aimed by said figure.

A toy of the character clesc'ibed consisting of a shell mounted upon wheels, figures held under spring tension in said shell and means whereby said figures may be released, to project out of said shell, said compression means consisting of a horizontally movable door, said door being spring controlled, means for holding said door closed, said means consisting of a hook link, means for releasing said hook, said means consist ing of a trigger, projecting from said shell, said shell being in the form of a torpedo, said trigger projecting from the nose of said torpedo, one of said figures being in the form of a soldier, carrying a gun, said soldier having a pivoted arm to which said gun is secured, means whereby said gun may be automatically aimed by said figure, said means consisting of a counter-Weight for holding said arm in a normally horizontal position.

4. A toy of the character described consisting of a shell mounted upon wheels, figures held under spring tension in said shell, means whereby said figures may be released, to project out of said shell, said compression means consisting of a horizontally movable door, said door being spring controlled, means for holding said door closed, said means consisting of a hook link, means for releasing said hook, said means consisting of a trigger, projecting from said shell, said shell being in the form of a torpedo, said trigger projecting from the nose of said torpedo, one of said figures being in the form of a soldier, carrying a gun, said soldier having a pivoted arm to which said gun is secured, means whereby said gun may be automatically aimed by said figure, said means consisting of a counter-weight for holding said arm in a normally horizontal position, and a disc upon which said figures are mounted, one of said figures being a flagst-aflt and flag.
