J. W. THOMPSON REEL FOR DISPENSING TAPES AND OTHER LIKE GOODS Filed Jan. 5. 1923 .20 cheap Patented Mar. 17, 1925.
"UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. THOMPSON, OF OAK PARK, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO MARSHALL FIELD do I COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
REEL FOR DISPENSING TAPES AND OTHER LIKE GOODS.
Application filed January 5, 1923. $eria1 No. 610,738.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN W. THOMPSON,
a citizen of the United States, residing. at
Oak Park, inlthe county of Cook andState of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels for Dispensinglapes and Other like Goods, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a reel of a con- 1 struction which adapts it to be mounted along with other similarly constructed reels upon a single support or shaft, and to pay out a tape, ribbon, or other commodity wound thereon without interference with an adjacent reel or reels and without any tendency to cause an adjacent reel to revolve and unwind its contained goods.
The object of the invention is to provide a reel construction which will not only be enough to be discarded when empty, but will be particularly adapted for assembly with the coil of goods to be wound upon it with a minimum of labor and without soiling or injuring the goods in the assembly.
Accordingly, the invention proceeds upon the principle of constructing the reel with a core or foundation having a non-round opening which adapts it for non-rotatable mounting upon-a stationary shaft, two disklike flange members applied axially to the core, and a sleeve surroundin the core between the flange members wit freedom of rotation relatively to the core and flange members, and having the goods coiled thereon; at least one of the flange members being united with the core member through means which overlie the flange members and interengage with the bore of the core, so that the reels may be supplied with one of the flange members assembled and the other flange member disassembled therefrom, and the sleeve, after having its tape coiled thereon, in a separate winding machine, can be sli ped in place over the unobstructed end 0 the core and permanently secured by means, preferably a flanged thimble, embracing the flange member and-interengaging with the core-member.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the segregated parts of a reel embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of a suggested form of device for winding the tape or other goods upon the sleeve.
Figure 3 is a face View of the reel shown in Figure 1, with one of its confining flanges omitted, and having in place thereon the coil Sf goods prepared by the device of Fig-- ure Figure 4 is an axial section of a reel, its coil of goods, and a suggested means for assembling the separately formed flange member.
1 represents the confining flanges of a reel and 2 the foundation core thereof upon which the flanges are secured and which has a non-round opening 3wh1ch adapts it for non-rotatable mounting upon a shaft, and 4 represents a sleeve or collar which surrounds the core 2.
As shown in Figures 3 and 4, the sleeve 4 has wound upon it a coil 5 of tape, and it fits the core 2 with sufficient looseness to perm t the coil of tape to revolve in unwinding and paying out portions of the tape as the same may be required. The reel is furnished with at least one of its flanges disassembled therefrom, and in order that it may be readily assembled therewith, a thimble 6 is provided. which fits the opening 7 in the disk 1 and enters the axial recess or bore 3 of the core member 2.. Thimble 6 is rovided with embracing lips 8 which adapt it to confine the flange 1 to the core 2 and its axially extending portion as well as the opening 7 in the disk, and the recess 3 in the core member is made of conforming non-round section so that the thimble assembles the disk in definite and fixed relation to the core member. To secure the thimble in the core member, it is simply necessary to indent or develop radial spurs or projections 9 (Figure 3) on the portion thereof that is within the core member, as for instance, by forcing a mandril 10 into displacing relation with one or more punches 11, as suggested in Figure 4. It will be seen that the thimble 6 serves as an assembling member for the core and flange, it being simpl necessary to place the assembled thimb e 6, flange 1, and core member 2 with its originally attached flan e member and separately formed coil of goods 5, over the upstanding neck 12 of the assembling table 13, and then subject the appropriate thimble to the punching opera tion to interlock it with the surrounding wall of the core member 2.
When assembled upon its reel as herein described, the coil 5 of goods will be free to rotate While the reel is heldstationary, and pay out the goods as required Without interference between a plurality of reels that may be mounted upon a single shaft or without tendency of one reel to induce rotation in the others. To separately prepare the coil 5 with the goods, the sleeve 4 may be mounted upon any suitable Winding machine, such, for instance, as the revolving head 14 carrying pins 15 upon which the sleeve is adapted to fit.
I claim:
1. A'reel for tape and other like goods, comprising an externally cylindrical and internally non-cylindrical core member adapt: ed to receive a coil of goods and having an axial recess, flange members for confining the goods upon the core member, a least one of Which fla nge members is separately formed, and a thimble passing axially through the separately formed flange member and entering the recess of and engaging with the core member; said thimble conforming to the interior of the core and being provided on its outer end with radially extending lips that overlie the outer face of the separatel formed flange member.
2. A reel or tape and other like goods, comprising an externally cylindrical and internally non-cylindrical core member, a sleeve member revolubly mounted on said core member adapted to receive a coil of goods and having an axial recess, flange members for confining the goods upon the core member, at least one of which flange members is separately formed, and a thimble passing axially through the separately formed flange member and entering the recess of and engaging with the core member; the portion of the thimble that enters the core member being radially displaced to interlock it with the wall of said recess.
8. A reel for tape and other like goods, comprising an externally cylindrical core member adapted to receive a coil of goods and having an axial recess, flange members for confining the goods upon the core member, at least one of which flange members is separately formed, and lies against the end of the core member, a sleeve rotatably mounted on said core member and axially confined by the flanges and a thimble passing axially through the separately formed flange member and entering the recess of and engaging with the core member; the recess' of the core member, the thimble, and the portion of the flange member surrounding the thimble being of non-round section and conforming one to another, and thereby retaining non-rotatable assembly of said arts. P Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 2nd day JOHN W. THOMPSON.
