UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL LORDON, OF FREMONT CENTRE, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,003, dated July 14, 1874; application filed May 29, 1874.
and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of Fig.2, taken on the line 00 0c, and Fig. 2 is a'view of the reverse side of the bottom of the lantern.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The bottom or base of the lantern A is made double, with a series of holes, B, connecting with the hollow space 0, for purposes of ventilation. D D are the wick-tubes in the chamber E. F is a chamber beneath the wickchamber. G is a tube, connected with the chamber F, which passes upward through the globe H. I is the oil-tube. J is the oil-reservoir. This oil-tube I connects the oil-chamber with the wick-chamber E. This tube, it will be seen, is within the globe. The oil is introduced through the orifice K into the reservoir, and is conveyed down to the wick-chamber E by the tube I. N is a wick in the end of the tube I, which may be adjusted from the orifice K, to allow the oil to flow to the wickchamber fast or slow, as may be desired. Lis an opening through the oil-reservoir. M is an inverted funnel over this opening, connected withthe tube Gr, by which heat is conducted down beneath the wick-chamber E.
It will be noticed that the tube G passes through the oil-chamber, and as a strong current of heated air passes up through the opening L, and is caught by the inverted funnel M, on the end of the tube, the oil in the wickchamber is soon heated, and the burners consequent] y afi'ord a clear and bright flame.
The guard or tender 0 of the lantern is held to the base A by means of catches P P in the springs. (Seen in dotted lines in Fig. 2.)
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The oil-chamber E, pipe I, oil-reservoir J having central tube L, pipe G having funnel M, and the chamber F, combined in the manner and for the purpose specified.
