IMPROVEMENT IN ROOFING-TILES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,99 l, dated July 14, 1874; application tiled June 22, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LoUrs HAMEL, of the city of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Roofing-Tiles, of which the following isa specification; and I do hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

My invention relates to a tile constructed in such manner as to admit of joints being formed with othertiles atits four sides, the said joints being made water-tight by the insertion of mortar or cement; and, further, to a peculiar construction ot' the tile, whereby a plain and unobstructed outer surface is obtained. The tile is made of clay, iron, or other nou-combustible substance, and the root' thus covered is therefore fire-proof.

In the accompanying' drawing, tbiming a part of this specification, Figure l is a top view of my improved tile. Fig. 2 is a section upon line m y. Fig. 3 is a section upon line nw, and Fig. 4 aview ofthe underside of the tile.

In the drawing, in which similar letters of reference in all the views indicate similar parts of the invention, A represents the body ofthe tile, the upper face ot' which is plain, except at two adjacent edges, which are depressed, and the grooves a formed therein. edges of the tile have on their under side the lips b, of such size and shape as to tit within grooves in contiguous tiles, corresponding with the grooves above described. It will be 0bserved that the edges of the tile, whichl are plain on the upper side, rest upon the depressions in the tiles next to them, and that by this means the upper faces of the tiles correspond in height when in place, or form a flat surface. The under side of the tile is excavated or recessed to lighten it, and to compensate for this reduction in thickness certain portions are left unreduced, forming the ribs c. Each tile is provided with one or more projecting lugs, d, on the under side, to engage The other with strips fastened to the roof, thus to prevent the tile from being moved out of place.

It will be seen that, at the point where the tiles are lapped and the mortar or cement applied, a double joint is produced, the upper tile resting upon both edges of the groove beneath. By this arrangement no water can possibly pass from the upper to the lower side of the tile.

My tile is 'well adapted to roofs having a slight or great inclination, but is more particularly applicable to flat roofs, as the tiles, when laid, present a continued iiat surface which can be walked over without inconvenience. The tile is,khowever, well designed for use on Mansard or similar roofs, and can be ornamented on its exposed surface, either iu pressed gures, or other manner, so as to prtduce a pleasing and elegant effect.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-' 1. A rooting-tile having a plain upper surface, except at two adjacent edges, which are depressed, and have the grooves a therein, and an excavated and ribbed under surface, as shown, by a series of which tiles fitted together a roof is formed having a ilat and unobstructed exposed surface, substantially as set forth.

2. A rooting-tile in which the groove into which the lip of the adjacent tile is inserted is below the upper surface of the tile, the groove forming a projection on the back or lower side of the said tile, and provided with an oset at the inner side of the said groove, upon which the edge or lip of the adjacent tile rests to form a double joint, substantially as specified.
