UNITED STATES LESLIE EUGENE 'rHoMrsoN, OF wA'rERLoo, IOWAT SIGN.
Application filed September a sign for use under various conditions, but.
especially adapted for advertising by theatres, hotels, and other public places. i
A further object is to provide a sign co1nprising a casing and an element, film or apron, adapted to be covered with such advertising matter as the purchaser requires for his particular business.
A further object is to provide for the illumination of a transparent film, on which is displayed the special advertising matter required.
,A still further object is to provide means for mounting and imparting motion to the film, the latter being displayed from three sides of the casing, and the idle portions of the film being out of contact with each other.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of elements described, illustrated and claimed,
it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claimwithout departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the sign; Figure 2 is a horizontal section; Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
The casing of the sign may be rectangular in form and of any suitable size, being provided with an inner wall 10, of approximately U form, but providing an offsetportion 11 forming a chamber 12 in which is mounted an electric motor 13.
The outer wall, at this corner of the casing, includes the angular portions shown,
and provides an element 14' correspond1ng with a similar member 15 on the opposite side, near the back. The casing may be of metal, and further includes the two forward corner elements 16 and 17, extending vertically, as shown. Three glass plates 18, 19, 20, cover the front and side openings of the casing formed as indicated, and it is the in tention that the film 21- shall pass in front of each opening and behind the glass, and that s, 1923. Serial no. 661,673.
the outer run of the film shall pass successively across these openings.
' The casing provides three main compartments, in communication at the forward corner portlons, and threemainrollers or drums 4) on,
side compartments, whereas two guidi ng' rollers 26, 27, are mounted at the front of 1' these compartments. Three other guiding I rollers '28, 29, 30, arem-ounted at. the left in F gure 2 and additional guiding'rollers 31, 32, appear at the right. The film or apron is of paper or light fibre PATENT a en 23, 24-. are mounted toward the rear-of the i and is transparent, the surface permitting of the painting thereon of pictures of all kinds and of descriptive and other advertising matter. In order to provide for the illumination of the forward run of the film in the most satisfactory manner, I provide a reflector of the form' shown, and located between the film being exposed and the glass front, other reflectors 36, 37 being used fola similar purpose at the sides of the casing.
Electric bulbs, such as38, are located in" chambers 39 belowthe level of the main portion of the casing, so that thc illuminatiol'i is entirely by reflected light rays,
out of contact'with other flat surfaces, and especially for keeping the front surface in good condition, the ,film is carried around In order to keep all surfaces of the liln'r the drums and guide rollers in the manner illustrated. The exact arrangement is not important, so long as the principle is adhered to, but the drawing shows four lengths of film at the front, two at one side and three at the other side. Driving means between the motor and an adjacent drum are shown conventionally at 41.
What I claim is V In a device of the class described, a casing, a continuous travelling element mounted therein, and disposed in aplurality of spaced runs, the outer run appearing succes-.-
sively opposite three sides of the casing, the inner run comprising portions parallel throughout with corresponding portions of.
the outer run on the three sides of the casing,.said travelling element including intermediate .runs parallel with the outer runs, and meansgfor illuminating the outer run throughout'its length by indirect. light rays.
. m In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
