OAR ATTACHMENT.
Application filed September To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. HELM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quantico, in the county of Prince lVilliam and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment for oars, and has for its principal object to provide a means for preventing the longitudinal movement of the oar in the usual oar lock whereby the same leverage may be maintained when the oars of a row boat are in operation.
Another important object of the invention is to provide an oar attachment of the above mentioned character which is of such construction as to prevent the same from becoming accidentally disengaged from the usual car look, thereby rendering the use of the attachment efficient and positive at all times.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an oar attachment of the above mentioned character, which may be readily and easily secured to an oar, the same being simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable, and further well adapted for the purposes for which the same is designated.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same:

In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates generally my improved attachment and the same is stamped from a single blank of metallic material. The attachment comprises aplate 2, which is of a suitable 5, 1924. Serial No. 736,079.
length and extending laterally from the opposite sides thereof, adjacent the respective ends of a pair of cars or fingers 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 respectively. A purpose of this construction will be presently described. The plate 2 of the attachment is provided with a series of openings 7, which are arranged in spaced relation and afford a means whereby the plate may be secured to an oar A after the same has been bent to conform to the shape of the oar, any suitable fastening means being employed for securing the attachment in position on the oar.
The usual oar lock associated with the oar 8 is designated generally at B, the same being substantially of U-shape design, and the spindle 0 thereof being adapted to be mounted in the usual socket provided therefor in the gunwale of a row boat. It is of course, to be understood that the spindle C is adapted to be swivelly supported in the gunwale so as to permit the free movement of the oar lock and the oar carried thereby.
The pair of laterally extending ears or fingers are disposed downwardly with respect to the oar 8 and engage the arms D and E of the oar lock B whichis of U-shaped design, in the manner as clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. With the parts arranged as shown in the drawing, the car 8 is prevented from moving longitudinally within the oar lock, yet enables the oar and oar lock to be swivelly sup-ported on the gunwale in order to afford the free movement of the car in use.
.When a pair of oars are provided with attachments of the above mentioned charac ter, and the same are positioned in the oar lock of a row boat, the proper leverage of the car will be maintained at all times, thus insuring a uniform stroke and further preventing the slipping of the oars with respect to the oar lock. The simplicity in which the present invention is constructed enables the same to be manufactured at a very low cost and may be readily and easily attached to an oar at any desired place thereon.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of the parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, What 5 I claim is:
In combination with an oar; and the usual lock therefor, of means for preventing the longitudinal movement of said oar in said lock, said means comprising a plate secured to the oar, and lateral projections extending 10 from the sides thereof adjacent the ends of the plate for engagement with the oar lock.
