Description

March l0. 1925;
E. R. CARPENTER GOLF CLUB Filed Got. 16, 1922 MIM@ at and State of Michigan, have invented new Patented Mar. l0, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT oFFicE.
GOLF CLUB.
Application led October 16, 1922. Serial No. 594,734.
To all 'whom z't may concern lBe it known that I', EDWARD R. CARPEN- TER, a citizen `of the United States, residing Grand Rapids, iii the county of Kent and useful Improvements in Golf Clubs, of which the following is a specification.
-The present invention relates to golfclubs, i. e.,. the instruments employed'iii the game of golf to drive or propel the balls; and its object is to provide such an instrument liaving a handle portion and a body portion provided with means for readily adjusting the weight of the body portion as may be desired by the individual player.
This object is attained by, and the iiiveii# tion finds preferable embodiment in, the. instrument particularly described in the body of this specification and illustrated b v the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of a golf 'club or golf stick looking toward the front edge of the body portion thereof, said body portion being partially sectioned on a vertical plane corresponding to line 1-1 of Figure 2;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of said body portion, its neck being broken away; and
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view ofsaid body portion taken on line 8 3 of Figure 1.
In the views, a golf club or golf stick is lshown, having a handle portion designated generally 1 and a body portion 2 wherewith the golf ball is struck to drive or pi'oa pel the same. This body portion is preferably made of Sonie light and stiff material as aluminum and has a neck 3 extending inclinedly-iipwardly therefrom as seen in Figure 1. This body portion and its neck are hol- 'low throughout, being a shell inclosing a chamber l which extends continuously through the' neck to a port 5 at the necks outer extremity. This port is closable, preferably by the handle portion l itself, which ings or liereinbefore extends in the direction of the neck and is provided at its lower end with suitable means for detachable connection with the hollow neck to close the saine and the chamber in the body portion. Such means is and the like, are introduced through the\ hollow neck into the chamber 4 to supply the additional weight desired by the player, `and a suitable packing material 13, lighter than the'weights, as cotton waste and the like, niay be likewise thus introduced to hold the weights tightly in place in the chamber.
It will be readily understood that the weight of the golf club and particularl of its body port-ion may be easily ,adj/11ste to suit the individual liking of the user of the instrument.
ed out in the claims, is not to be limite to or by details of construction of the particular i embodiment thereof illustrated by the drawshown or described.
I claim:
In a golf club; a body portion having a i neck inclined relatively thereto, and a chamber extending through the meek; an elongated handle portion extending in the direction of the neck and adapted to be detacli- 80 ably connected thereto to close the chamber; weights andpacking material in the chamber adapted to ass thereinto arid therefrom through the neclk.
In testimon my hand at rand Rapids, Michigan, this 13th day of October, 1922.
' EDWARD R. CARPENTER.:
