Be it known that I, Vieron ODQUIST, a citizen of the United States, residing in Yonkers, in the county of lVestchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reenforced- `Metal Spools, vof which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to spools such as are used in winding silk thread and the like, and has more particular reference to reenforced metal construction of a spool for this general purpose.
It has heretofore been the custom to use wooden spools having comparatively thick core or barrel parts, for the purpose stated, since no other type of construction was known which provided suflicient strength at practicable cost. o
A principal object of my invention is the provision of a metal reenforced spool of strength equal or Superior to that of the wooden spools heretofore used, and constructed in such manner as to be capable of being produced at low cost and without the employment of expensive material or machinery.
In metal spools heretofore tried for use in this connection diliiculty has been experienced not only in the foregoing particulars, but in having the thread become packed in between the barrel and end portions of the spool. It is, therefore, a further object of my invention to provide a` spool in which the parts mentioned are secured together in such manner as to overcome this difliculty, while at the same time being of the required strength and cheapness.
Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompan ing drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.

Upon the drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention, the reference character 11 indicates a sheet metal barrel or core which is tubularin form and has its side edges joined in an internal lock seam indicated generally by the reference character 12. This seam is formed by' turning the material of the barrel back upon itself as at 13, and returning the part beyond the bend 13 back as at 14, and forming the extremity thereof into a hook l5. rI`his hook is engaged by an oppositely disposed hook 16 in the other side edge. Metal end members 17 are formed with internaloutwardly extending flanges 18 adapted to be slipped upon the straight walls 19 at each end of the barrel portion 11. These members have also an exterior upstanding flange 21, a channel 22 being formed between said flanges. A beaded metal reenforcing member 23 is positioned in the channel 22 and the outer flange 21 is turned down thereon as at 2A. The end members are slipped well upon the barrel walls and the extremities of said walls are flanged as at 25 and turned into locking engagement with the inner flange 18, the extremity 26 of which is also turned outwardly and embraced in a seam with the flange 25. It will be observed that the extremity of the flange 25 bears upon the inner part of the reenforced member 23, which is held thereby and y by the flange 24 in firmly fixed position. The flange 18 fits snugly upon the wall 19 and particularly when interlocked with the y flange 25 is so firmly positioned as to prevent entrance of threads between it andA said barrel wall, thereby preventing' the packing `of threads between these parts and obviating the defect in this regard which has existed in other types of metal spools.
It will be noted also that withY the flanges v of the various parts formed as described, the spool presents no sharp points or .edges sinceall of the exposed parts are suitably rounded and protected. Furthermore, with the tight seams rovided and the lfirm positioning of the eaded or corrugated remforcing member 23, a strong and. efficient' construction is obtained. The entire spool is formed from a single type of metal, preferably sheet metal, and of few parts, which may be readily stamped and formed with ordinary machinery, and with few and simple operations. Thus, it Will be seen that I have provided astrengthened, eflicient and economical metal spool thoroughly adapted for the purposes above set forth.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and.

the end members and the end edges of the barrel bein;r interlocked in seams at the ends of the barrel.
2. A sheet metal spool comprising, in combination, the following elements; a sheet metal tubular barrel, sheet metal annular end members and sheet metal annular reenforcing members, the end members being of channel formation having inner and outer flanges which are bent respectively outward and inward over the edges of the reenforcing members; and the end edges of the barrel being bent outward over the reenforeing members and interlocked under the edges of the inner flanges of the end members.
3. In a sheet metal spool, in combination, a sheet metal tubular barrel member and annular end members, the end members having flanges resting against the barrel member at the ends thereof and having the eX- `tremities of said flanges bent outward, and
the edges of the barrel member being bent Inward under the sald flanges, and reenforcing members unlted With said barrel and end members.
