MODELING DEVICE.
Application filed September. 19, v1924;. Serial No. 738,592.
To all whom it may concern Be. it known that I, PAUL R. GLAscow,
a citizen of the United. Statesfresiding at Clevelanchin the county of Guyahoga and. State of Ohio, have invented certain new The present: invention. relates to. a mode-l.-
ing, device which isadapted. for.- use by children for. producing artistic. and pleasing; shapes from plastic material. suchv as; sand,
modeling. clay or the like,
Among. to provi e. amodelingdevice of this char.- acter. which. is; simple and. inexpensive in its constructiomwv-hich can. be. readily used upon an ordinary, deskor. table, which provides a tray for receiving the sand. or. other material with which the child is working so that the: material canbe handled neatly and without being scattered all around the room, and which can be readily lifted away from the sand or clay which has been modeled so as to leave the modeled shape standing by itself.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a modeling device which is constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view of one corner of the modeling device illustrating more clearly the details of construction.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated on all of the views of the drawing by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawing which illustrates one of many possible forms of the invention, the numeral 1 designates a web member which is surrounded by a marginal flange 2, and in conjunction with the flange provides a tray member for receiving the sand, clay or other modeling material which is to be used in working with the device. The marginal flange 2 projects laterally on both sides of the web 1 so that the tray is reversible and can be placed upon a support with either side uppermost.
One or more openings are formed in the web 1 and these openings are of a particular shape corresponding to the shape which is desired to be produced from the sand or the objects of the invention are clay w-ithwhich the child is working EX-v tending around the edge of. each of these openings is a modeling flange 3 which pro jects laterally from bothsides ofthe web 1, the edges of the flanges terminating: in the same planes as the corresponding edges-of the marginal flange 2. As illustrated. on the. drawing, jthe web 1 is provided with four. of the modeling openings which are in shapes simulating diii'erent animals, al.- though it will be understood that. the particular. shapes of the openings is a. matter of design and that. they can be given various forms and. shapes as. desired.
In using the device. it is adapted. to be. placed upon a table top or other. flat surface, and the device is reversible so: that. it. can be placed in position with either side thereof uppermost. paperor like material may be first. placed upon the table top to protect the same... The sand, clay or other material to be modeled can then be placed loosely upon the web 1 Where it will be confined by the marginal flange 2 and prevented from falling into the modeling openings by the flanges 3. The child can place the sand or clay in one or more of the modeling openings as desired, and pack the material in the shape defined by the modeling flange 3 of the opening. The lower edge of the flange will fit squarely against the fiat surface on which the device is resting so that the sand or clay can be packed on the portion of this surface which is defined by the flange. After the space which is defined by the modeling flange has been filled the device can be carefully lifted, whereupon the sand or clay which has been modeled will remain upon the support, retaining the particular shape which was defined by the modeling flange 3. The de vice thus provides a pleasing and attractive appliance which can be used in an effective way for modeling shapes from sand or plastic material, and which enables the sand or the material to be neatly handled without danger of being scattered all about the room.
The device is extremely simple in its construction and can be inexpensively manufactured by casting it as an integral device from some suitable material such as aluminum.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. A modeling device of the character de- If desired, a sheet of heavy scribed, including a web member having an opening therein of a particular shape corresponding to the shape which it is desired to impart to the modeling material, and a marginal flange extending around the outer edge of the web member, the web and marginal flange providing a tray member to initially receive the modeling material which is to be manually placed in the space defined by the opening and caused to assume the shape of the opening, after which the tray can be removed.
2. A modeling device of the character described including a web member having an opening therein ot' a particular shape, and a modeling flange extending around the edges of the opening and projecting laterally on both sides of the web, whereby the device is reversible and can be placed upon a flat surface with either side thereof uppermost, the web being then supported in an elevated position and being adapted to initially receive the modeling material which is to be inserted in the shape defined by the modeling flange.
3. A modeling device of the character described including a web member having an opening therein of a particular shape, a modeling flange extending around the edges of the opening and projecting laterally from the Web member, and a marginal flange extending around the outer edge of the web member, the edges of the marginal flange and modeling flange terminating in the same plane, the web and marginal flange providing a tray member to initially receive the modeling material which is to be placed in the space defined by the modeling flange.
4:. A modeling device of the character described including a web member having an opening therein of a particular shape, a modeling flange extending around the edges of the said opening and projecting in both directions from the web member, and a man ginal flange extending around the outer edge of the web member and also projecting in opposite directions therefrom, the edges of the marginal flange and modeling flange terminating in the same planes on opposite sides of the web member, whereby the modeling device is reversible and can be placed upon a flat surface with either side uppermost, the web member and upwardly projecting flanges then providing a tray memher to initially receive the modeling material which is to be inserted in the space defined by the modeling flange.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
