UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F; GA'UNT, OF BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
DEVICE FOR ATTACHING MEDALS AND THE LIKE TO THE PERSON.
Application filed November 16, 1923. Serial No. 675,036.
To all "whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES FREDERICK GAUNT, of Warstone Parade lVorks, Birmingham, England, a subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Attaching Medals and the like to the Person; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip- 1 tion thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide a device in the nature of a clip or holder to detachably retain a medal, badge or other article of adornment or decoration without in any way cutting or other-.
wise disfiguring the article.
The invention may be said briefly to consist of a holder or clip consisting of a resilient ring adapted to be opened to receire the medal, badge or the like and firmly hold the same, means for attaching the holder to the person being pivotally or otherwise fastened to the holder.
For full comprehension, however, of my invention reference must be had to the accompanying drawings in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts and wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my clip or holder with a medal set in place;
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on line 22 Figure 1 without a medal in place; and
Figure 3 is a detail elevation of the clip or holder without a medal in place.
The clip constituting the preferred embodiment of my holder consists of thin sheet metal formed to present an open circular ring or frame of substantially angular cross section and with its axial wall 2 slightly concaved. The back 3 is preferably flat "and has an enlargement 4: near its middle, such enlargen'ient having a fiat integral tongue 5 bent in the form of a hook which is passed through an eye 7 on the upper end of a pin 6, the eye being formed by bending the pin at right angles to its main length in loop form.
This frame or holder permits a medal such as indicated at 8 to be sprung into it where it may be held without disfigurement on either side the inherent resiliency of the frame retaining the medal without the aid of extraneous means. The wearer may insert a medal or badge bearing the repre sentation of a baseball player or other pictorial or embossed representation and thus wear it during the event of which the medal is emblematic. And afterwards the medal or badge not being in any way disfigured on either side may be taken out and preserved and the holder or frame used for other emblems or medals.
What I claim is as follows:
1. A clip or holder adapted to receive and detachably retain a medal or the like, the said clip or holder consisting of a resilient open ring adapted to receive and retain the medal or the like, the resiliency of the ring being sufficient to retain the medal without the aid of extraneous means.
2. A clip or holder adapted to receive and detachably retain a medal or the like, the said clip or holder consisting of a resilient open ring adapted to receive and retain the medal or the like, the resiliency of the ring being sufficient to retain the medal without the aid of extraneous means and such ring having an integral flat back coextensive with the ring and a pin for attachment to the person.
3. A clip or holder adapted to receive and detachably retain a medal or the like, said clip orholder consisting of a resilient open ring adapted to receive and retain the medal without overlapping the front face thereof.
4. A cli or holder ada ted to receive and detachably retain a medal or the like, the said clip or holder consisting of a resilient open ring adapted to receive and retain the medal or the like, the resiliency of the ring being sufficient to retain the medal without the aid of extraneous means and such ring having an integral flat back coextensive with the ring and the said back having an integral hook upon which is pivoted a pin for attachment to the person.
5. A clip or holder adapted to receive and detachably retain a medal or the like, the said clip or holder consisting of a resilient open ring adapted to receive and retain the medal or the like, the resiliency of the ring being sufficient to retain the medal without the aid of extraneous means, the ring being of angular cross-section, the
pel'igheral Wall of the ring being concaved name to this specification in the presence and the back Wall havlng an extenslon With of two wltnesses. an lntegral tongue bent to hook form, and
a pin having an eye bent at right angles CHARLES E. GAUNT. to the main length of the pin and connected Witnesses: to the tongue. GORDON G. CooKn,
In testimony whereof I have signed my HARRIETTE MCDONALD.
