Description
M. s. FULLER Mar. 3. 1925.
TOOL
Filed Sept. 18, 1925 Patented Mar. 3, 1925.
UNITED STATES l MORTIMER S. FULLER, OF LAWRENCE, MICHIGAN.
TOOL.
Application led September 18, 1923. Serial No. 663,424.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, MORTIMEP. S. FULLER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, county of Van Buren, State of Michigan, have invented vcertain new and usefiil Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tool.
My improved tool is especially designed by me for applying wire fasteners to baskets for securing the top thereto.
The main object of thisinvention is to provide a tool which enables the rapid and easy application of fasteners for securing basket tops by means of which the fasteners are effectively drawn to position and clinched or engaged with the cover.
Further objects, and objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the :following specification. The invention is clearly described and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I is an inside perspective view of my tool.
Fig. II is a plan view of one of the fasteners employed on the type of basket shown in Figs. III and IV.
Fig. IIA is plan view of' one of the fasteners employed on the type of basket shown in Fig. V.
Fig. III is a detail fragmentary view of a basket illustrating the method of using my improved tool, the tool being here shown in its initial position. i
Fig. IV is a detail view corresponding to that of Fig. III illustrating' the manipulation of the tool'to engage or clinch the fastener.
Fig. V is a detail view illustrating the use of the tool with a fastener of the type shown in Fig. IIA.
In the drawing similar reference numerals indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a basket and 2 the top outside hoop thereof. The cover comprises slats 3 mounted upon a rim 4. The covers are secured in place by the wire fasteners 5 having hooks 5 at their lower ends adapted to be engaged under the hoop 2 and clinched over the rim 4.
It has heretofore been the general prac tice, so far as I am aware, to engage these fasteners with the fingers, the result being that they were not firmly engaged, permitting the covers to be easily removed, or partially removed, thereby allowing'acc-ess to the contents, lresulting in large' quantities of fruit or thel like, for which the baskets are used, being stolen in transportation.
This tool comprises a lever-like handle 7 having an inwardly curved fixed jaw 8 at its inner end. A coacting jaw 9 is secured by the pivot 10 to the knuckle 11 secured to the handle by the strap 12, the knuckle being formed on the end of the strap.
This jaw 9 is hook-shaped to be engaged under the basket hoop 2, the jaw belng adapted to receive the hook 6 of the fastener 5.
In applying the lfasteners they are positioned as shown in Fig.` III, the hook being seated in the pivot yjaw and engaged over the hoop 2. The handle is then actuated to swing the end of the fastener over the cover rim 4, the knuckle 11 kconstituting' a fulcrum wiping the fastener over the edge of the cover rim as shown in Fig. V, drawing the rim tight and at the same time clinching the end of the. fastener within the rim.
To facilitate the positioning of the fasteners in the jaws, the inner faces of the jaws are preferably longitudinally` grooved at 13. The end of the strap 12 is extended into a rest 14 limiting the movement of the jaw 9 toward th-e handle thuspreventing the pinching of the operators fingers or striking .the same against the basket in adjusting the fastener and tool thereto.
AIn Figs. IIA and V I show a fastener 15 with a brad 16 at one end, the brad being forced into the cover top as shown in Fig. V instead of the fastener being clinched or wrapped around the rim as shown in Fig. IV, the tool being well adapted for affix ing either form of fastener.
The handle 7 is preferably provided with nail puller jaws 17, thereby adapting the tool for the removal of the fasteners, and also for pulling nails and the like for opening boxes, etc.
My improved tool is very economical to produce and greatly expedites the 'fapplfwa1 tion of' fasteners of this type in an effective manner.
I have illustrated a simple andypraetical embodiment of my tool. I have not attempted to illust-rate certain modifications and adaptations thereof which I contemplate,v as
I believe the disclosure'made"will enable those skilled in the art to which vmy invention relates to embody or adapt the sameas may be desired. v
Having 'thus described my'inventio-n wl'iat I claimas new andv desire; to "securebyLetters Patent i's: l
