Description

NITED STATES PATENT JOHN E. OOFFIN, OF WES'IBROOK, MAINE.
MACHINE FOR ROUNDING AND BCKING- BOOKS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,282, dated July 8, 1856.

Be it known that I, JOHN E. COFFIN, of l/Vestbrook, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Rounding and Backing Books; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the anneXed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- F igure'l, is perspective view of my im provement. Fig. 2, is a vertical section of the device by which the backs of the books are rounded. Fig. 3, is a side view of the device which operates the hammers for backing the books. Figs. 4L, 5 and 6, represent end views of a book during the different stages of the process.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists in the employment or use of a follower, clamp, sliding bed and hammers, arranged and operating as will be hereinafter fully shown and described.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a rectangular frame having a horizontal feed board B, on its front end and C, represents a stationary jaw secured in the frame A, above the inner end of the feed board B.
D, represents a sliding aw which is placed parallel with the jaw C, and has guides a, one at each end, said guides working in grooves in the inner sides of the top side pieces of t-he frame. y
E, is a toggle, one end of which is attached to the sliding jaw D and the opposite end is attached to a plate ZJ, which fits in the back upper cross piece of the frame and bears against a wedge or inclined block C, which has a screw rod c', connected with it. 'Io the center joint of the toggle E, there is attached an upright F, the lower end of which is pivoted to a lever Gr, having a weight Il, on its outer end.
I, represents a shaft which is placedtransversely in the lower part of the frame A. This shaft has two cams J, K, upon it, one of which, J, acts or bears against the lever Gr, the other cam K acts or bears upon an arm oZ, which is attached to a shaft L. One end of the shaft I, has a driving pulley M, upon it and the opposite end has a grooved cam N, attached to it. The shaft L, has two arms, O, O, attached to it. These arms have connecting rods e, e, at their ends, the upper ends of said rods being attached'to a follower P, which works between the two jaws C, D. The upper edge of the follower P, is rounded as shown in Fig. 2.
Q, is a sliding plate or bed which is fitted and works on ways f, f, placed transversely on the frame A, just'above the jaws O, D. The bed Q, has a rod g, attached to its outer end, said rod being pivoted to the outer end of a lever R, which has a horizontal lever S, connected to it, the end of the lever S, being fit-ted in the grooved cam N. The under side of the bed Q, has a half-round groove 7b, made longitudinally in it, as shown in Fig. 2, and two upright plates z', z', are attached to the bed, between which two cams j, j, are placed, said cams being on a shaft le, which has a bevel wheel Z, on its end. The wheel Z, gears into a corresponding wheel m which is placed on a shaft T, the wheel m, being allowed to slide on the shaft and connected to it by a groove and feather. Between the two upright plates z', z', two levers n, n, are placed, said levers being on a shaft and having each a hammer V V on their ends. The faces of these hammers are made concave corresponding to one quarter of a circle, as shown in Fig. l. The cams j, j, act upon or against the levers n, n.
The cam J, operates the toggle E, and sliding jaw Dthe cam K, operates the follower P, and the cam N, operates the bed Q, and these cams are so formed and placed upon t-he shaft I, that when the cam K elevates the follower P, the cam J, will press the jaw D, toward the jaw C and the cam N, then operates t-he bed Q. The books, designated by U, are placed on the feed board B, side by side, the backs being ,uppermost. The follower P, being down, the innermost book is pressed against it and the follower P, is then raised by the cam K and forced upward between the two jaws D, the back of the book being forced into the groove 7L, and made, of course, to correspond to its form, see Fig. 5. The cam J, then actuates the toggle E, and the sliding jaw D is pressed toward the jaw C, the book being firmly clamped between the two jaws; the cam N, then actuates the levers S, R, and the bed Q, is moved along on the ways 7, f, and the hammers, V, are operated by the cams j, j, on the shaft 7c, said hammers acting upon the back of the book, perfecting the Work and causing the back of the book to project beyond the inner surfaces of the jaws, so as to form a perfectback, as shown in Fig. 6.
The books may be fed to their work on the feed board B, by hand or by a feeding device, and the finished books are forced upward and out between the upper parts of the jaws by the succeeding books as they are raised by the follower P. The shaft T, may be driven by a belt ax from the driving pulley M.
I do not claim the toggle E, nor the wedge (o), for they have been previously used and arranged as herein described, nor do I claim the stationary and sliding aws separately or in themselves considered.
