Be it known that' IJAsrEa L. GRnnNWoon, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of NorthV East Harbor, Nov-a Scotia, Canada, have invented ,anew and Improved Rim Contractor` and Expander, of which the following isa full, clear,and.exact-description.
This invention 4.relates to. Va `tool for contracting and expanding split aims .toraut@- mobile tires, andihas for an object the ,provision of a simple, efficient land durable device which can be very .easily operated .to` effect the certain and ready contraction and expansion of a split rim.y Y
Another object concerns the provision of auxiliary meaDS: yWll, e.r.eby the` interengaging lock members-on the rim sections Vcan bev siinply and easily disengaged and reengaged as desired.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings, of Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a rim with the tool applied thereto in the position which the parts assume when the rim has just been expanded into its normal position;
Fig. 2 is a partial elevation of the parts in their aositions When the rim has been contracteld;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
The form of the invention shown in the drawings is a preferred form, although it is understood that modifications in the construction and arrangement of the parts and in the character of the materials used may be adopted Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the general contemplationof the invention, I have desired to provide a pair of rimclamping members suitably interconnected by links and levers and associated with an lever on which is a rim-engaging linger, which finger is adapted to be associated With the rim at a point closely adjacent the split therein so that in the movement of the levers the auxiliary lever is so operated as to cause the engagement of the finger at this point to more certainly lift the lock or lat h plate on the end of one section of the rim out of engagement With the other and to more certainly reengage them When the rim is being expanded Furthermore,
the `invention includes the Yprovision of `simple and eiiicient means for locking the parts in Aeither Aof their positions .as .the rim is fully expanded or fully contracted.
As shown in .the drawings, the invention concerns the. Aprovisionof Va tool to :be applied tor a split rim, the ends of which are numbered .1 and 2 and abut each other along the line 3. One of said sections, preferably 2, G5 is provided with a locking `plate 4 4having al dependent hook 5 extending into an -aperture in the other section 1, this section l being iprovided with a movable latch plate t3 which 4extends over the aperture .to retain 7U the hook therein.` This construction is one of the Well known ,forms of construction yfor split rims. Adjacent the split 3, although not necessarily very close the-reto;v are rimengaging clampingelements .and 8 ofany 75 suitable type. To one of said elements, 11,

To a point intermediate the length of the link 10 an auxiliary lever 11 is pivoted. On the inner end of this auxiliary lever is pivotally mounted a rimengaging nger 12. To this finger a spring 13 is connectedlthe other S5' end of Which spring is connected to the auxiliary lever 11 and, therefore, tends to svvin the linger around to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, or a similar position on the opposite side of the end of the lever 11.
A locking bar 14 is pivotally engaged With the inner end of lever 9, and the other end of it is provided With a hook 15 adapted to be engaged in any one of a plurality of apertures such as 16 in the link 10 so as to hold this link and the co-operating parts in a denite position after these parts have as sumed that position. By providing more than one aperture such as 16 in the linklO, 10o the parts may be locked in more than one position. The outer end of the auxiliary lever 11 is provided with a locking bar 1i Which is adapted to be engaged in a hole in the lever 9 for the purpose of lockingly 105 relating the end of the auxiliary lever 11 I with respect to the position of lever 9 so that the movement of lever 9 vvill cause the move ment of lever 11 WhenV they are locked together.
In the operation of the device, assuming that the parts are in the positions shown in Fig. 1, it Will be noticed that the iinger l2 is engaging the latch plate 6 and that said plate has been moved transversely of the rim to move it from over the aperture in Which the linger or hook 5 lies. The lock bar 17 is connected between the levers 9 and 11, but the lock bar 14 is disengaged. Then the lever 9 is moved to the dot-and-dash position shown in Fig. 1, Which will cause the lever 11 to move to a corresponding dotand-dash position, and through this movement the end of the lingerl l2 Will act as a sort of fulcrum for the lever 11 and enable theend of the section 2, including the latch plate 1, to be sharply drawn away from the end of the other section. In other words, the end of the finger 12 tends to keep the end of section l in a fixed position While the movement of the linkage is causing the movement in the end of the other section.`
After the operation of the device has completely removed the end of one section from the end of the other, then the parts are locked until the reverse operation is desired, When by merely unlocking the bar 1&1 and moving the parts back to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the end of section 2 is permitted to assume its normal position With respect to the end of section 1, and
link bar pivoted at one end to said lever and at the other end to the other of said clamps, an auxiliary lever pivoted to said link bar, and a rim-engaging finger on the inner end of said auxiliary lever to engage the rim closely adjacent the split therein.
2. In a rim contractor and expander, a combination of coasting clamps to detachably engage the rim adjacent the split therein, a lever pivoted to one of said clamps, a link bar pivot-ed at one end to said lever and at the other end tothe other of said clamps, an auxiliary lever pivoted to said link bar, a rim-engaging linger on the inner end of said auxiliary lever to engage the rim closely adjacent the split therein, and a lock bar adjustably connectible bet-Ween the firstmentioned lever and the rear end of the auxiliary lever to lock them together When desired.
