Description

Feb. 24321925.
"r; l REYNOLDS" swm CUTTER Filed Jan. 4.. 1924 WITNESS:
ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 24, 1925'.
PATENT OFFICE.
TI-IEREL I. REYNOLDS, 015 FORT SAM HOUSTON, TEXAS.
STEEL CUTTER.
Application filed January 4, 1924. Serial No. 684,438.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEREL I. REY- NOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Sam Houston, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steel Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for cut ting steel and the like, the general object of the invention being to provide a manually operated. device for shearing off pieces of steel or the like by a pair of cutting members which are provided with curved cutting edges.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide spring means for holding the cutting ll'lGll'lbQlS separated This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, i1 lustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
ln describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side View of the device.
Figure 2 is a plan view.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3% of Figure 1.
Figure 4.- is a sectional view through the hinged connection of the knives.
Figure 5 is a sectional view through the cutting edges of the two knives.
In these views, 1 indicates a pair of supporting members w rich are each of inverted U-shape and 2 indicates a beam supported by such members by having its ends bolted thereto, as shown at 3. The extremities of this beam are reduced to form handles 4: by which the device can be transported.
' ing members.
Braces 5 connect the central part of the beam with the cross pieces 6 of the support- A stationary cutting knife 7 is bolted to the beam and a movable knife 8 is pivotally secured to the knife 7 by the pivot bolt 9. Each of these knives is provided with a curved cutting edge, as shown at 10, so that a shearing cutting action is se cured. A spring 11, fastened to the rear of the knife 8 and to one of the bolts 3, tends to hold the knife 8 in raised position and a handle 12 is connected with the forward end of this knife 8 for actuating the same.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the knife 8 is normally held in raised position so that the object to be out can be placed between the cutting edges of the two knives. Then by pressing downwardly upon the handle 12 the obj ect will be cut by the shearing action of the two knives.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall witlr in the scope of the appended claim.
hat I claim is:--
A device of the class described comprising a pair of supporting members, a beam bolted to said members, handles at the ends of said beam, braces connecting the beam with the supporting members, a stationary knife carried by the beam, a movable knife pivoted to the stationary knife, said knives having curved cutting edges, a spring connecting the movable knife with the beam, for normally holding the knife in raised position and a handle member connected with the movable knife.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
THEREL I. REYNOLDS.
