Description
AUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT N. HABLAN, OF OTTUMVA, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHIMNEV-COWLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,631, dated June 30, 1874; application filed February 7, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT N. HARLAN, of Ottumwa, in the county of Wapello and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvementin Ohimney-Gowls; and I do hereby y declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this speciiication, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a sectional view of my chimney-cowl. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
This invention has relation to chimney-cowls; and it consists in the novel construction of a chimney-cowl body, whereby portions of it are utilized to form the openings and hoods around the Ventilating-openings, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, A designates the cylindrical casing or body of the cowl, which may be of any suitable diameter and length, and B shows the conical top of this cowl, portions b of which are extended beyond the body to form the roofs of passages leading out through four Ventilating-holes, C. These passages are equidistant apart, and their sides c c are formed by cutting and bending out portions of the metal of the body A, as shown iu Fig. 2. In this way I utilize metal and time in the construction of the cowl. D designates a curved guard or closer for the holes C, which is arranged inside of the cylindrical body A,
so as to revolve closely thereto. rJhis guard D is of such capacity as that it will close any one of' the holes O when brought opposite thereto. It is secured to a vertical spindle, E, by means of arms c a, which spindle is stepped into or swivels in a bridge-tree, G, and extends centrally through the apex of Jthe coverB, carrying on its upper end a vane, F, which is attached to said spindle diametrically opposite the guard D.
It will thus be seen that the action of the wind on the vane will turn the guard D, so as to shut the hole O toward the Wind, and by so doing it leaves three holes open for the escape of the smoke, and for prevent-ing currents from descending the chimney.
My improved cowl may be secured on the top of the chimney by means of clamps in the usual way of attaching cowls to chimneys; or it may be built into the chimney, and'thus secured in a more substantial manner.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The cylindrical casing A, having the ventilating-holes C formed by cutting and bending out portions of its body to form the sides c, in combination with a conical top, B, having portions b extending beyond the body A, to form the roofs of the Ventilating-holes O, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
, ROBERT N. HARLAN.
Witnesses: CHARLES T. McCARRoLL, CHRISTOPH. MILLER.
