ALADAR HOLLANDER, OF
BERKELEY, GALIFQRNIA...
MULTISTAGE CENTRIFUGAL BUMP.
Application filed March 27,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALADAR HOLLANDER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Berkeley, county of Alameda, State of California, have invented new and useful ln'iproven'ients in Multistage Centrifugal Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is the arrangement of parts and passages in a multi-stage centrifugal pump whereby the several parts may be readily assembled or dismantled with the greatest ease, and whereby the machine operations are simplified and cheapened and, tie operation andmaintenance conditions improved.
Other objects will appear from the drawings and specifications which follow.
These objects l accomplish by arranging a pluralityof impellers so that their suction inlets are right and left respectively and intcrposing between the said impellers a dia-. phragm member of greater. diameter thanthe impeller which it encloses.
This diaphragm is of circular shape and adapted to be bolted or otherwise suitablyl'astened within a circular opening in the casing and between the impellers thus dividing the pressure stages, of the pump Opposite the outside of one of the impellers and preferably on the high pressure side it introduce a cover adapted to close another opening in the casing large enough topass freely the diaphragm and the im ellers.
The impellers are fixed together y screw threads and are secured to the driving shaft by spline or key let into the shaft and having a head or upset portion which is clamped between the two impellers when they are screwed together. ltn this way the impellers are held firmly from slipping in any direction on the shaft, and upon removing one side of the pump case the impellers and the shaft may be readily removed without disturbing the discharge and suction connection to the casing.
By referring to the accompanying drawings and specifications my invention will be made clear.
Fig. l is a cross section through a two stage centrifugal pump in which my invention has been incorporated.
2 is an end View of the pump in llligt l.
channel in the cover 4, to the .Jlhe impeller 1924. Serial Ito. 702,2d2.
Fig. 3 is a view taken from the other end of the pump in Fig. l.
Throughout the figures similar numerals refer to identical parts.
A suction inlet of the pump is shown by the numeral 1, from which the water is taken up by theimpeller 2 and discharged into the low pressure volute passage 3, from which it is delivered through the annular impeller 5. 5 in turn discharges high pressure water 'into the volute 6 and the water passes thence through the discharge outlet 7. I
' At 8 is a diaphragm or disc separating the compartments of different pressure and filling an opening in the casing. Through carrying with it the shaft 9, and impeller 5. This is best accomplished by removing the cover t and the screws is releasing the diaphragm 8 which comes out with the rotating element and without disturbing the casing or any ofthe pipe connections. I
The runners are attached to the shaft as follows:
At 20 is shown a key having a gib head 22 let into the shaft an engaging a keyway in the hub of the impeller 2. Thehub is also recessed preferably by an annular cut 21 to admit the head of the key.
At 23 ll showscrew threads on the hub of the said impeller 2 with which correspending threads on the hub of impeller 5 are adapted to engage.
ltt is of course im Jortant that the direction of rotation of tie shaft 9 be such that the threads will tighten due to the torque under the operating conditions. 'When the impellers are tightened together the hub of impeller-5 bears against the gib head 22 thus binding the two impellers in axial relation to each other and to the shaft at the same time that the key provides the desired lock between the shaft and the. impellers.
In dismantling the unit if it is desired to remove the impellers from the shaft the cover 4 is first removed after which the impeller 5- may he removed before the dia phragm plate 8 is taken out or it ma be left in wi its assembled impellers may be thereafter removed.
place on the shaft, and then t e shaft -this opening impeller 2 may be withdrawn It will now be seen that the rotating parts i may be removed without disturbing the inlet or outlet connections 1 and 7 of the easing or disturbing the casing, full access to the interior being attained by employing my IIIVGDUOD.
I claim:
1. In a multi-stage centrifugal pump having high and low pressure impellers arranged back to back on a rotatable shaft, a. casing having an inlet on one side and a discharge outlet on the other side, a cover forming with said casing an intermediate passage, said casing and cover joined on a plane at right angles to said shaft and a diaphragm adapted to close an opening in the casing of greater diameter than the impellers and interposed between the impellers and having a running joint with the rotatable parts therebetween, the impellers being coupled by screw threads on their hubs and a spline on said shaft engaging one impeller hub and abutting against the other impeller when the runners are screwed together.
2 In a multistage centrifugal pump haring high and low pressure impellers arranged back to back on av rotatable shaft. a casing having an inlet on one side and a discharge outlet on the other side, a cover t'orming with said casing an intermediate passage, said casing and cover joined on a plane at right angles to said shaft and a diaphragm adapted to close an opening in the casing of greater diameter than the impellers and interposed between the impellers and having a running joint with the rota table parts therebetween, means coupling the impellers together and a spline on said shaft engaging one impeller hub and abutmamas ting against the other impeller when the runners are screwed together.
3. In a multi-stage centrifugal pump having high and low pressure impellers arranged back to back on a. rotatable shaft, acasing having an inlet on one side and a discharge outlet on the other side, a cover forming 'with said casing an intermediate passage, said casin and cover joined on a plane at right ang es to said shaft and a diaphragm adapted to close an opening in the casing of greater diameter than the impellers and interposed between the impellers and having a running joint with the rota-- table parts therebetween, the impellers coupled by screwthreads'on their hubs concentric with said joint and a spline on said shaft engaging one impeller hub and abutting against the other impeller when the runners are screwed together.
4. In a multistage centrifugal pump having high and low pressure impellers arranged backto back on a rotatable shaft. a casing having an inlet on one side and a discharge outlet on the other side, a cover forming with said easing an intermediate passage, said casing and cover joined on a plane at right angles to said shaft and a diaphragm adapted to close an opening in thecasing of greater diameter than the impellers and interposed between the impellers and having a running joint with the rotatable parts therebetween, means coupling the impellers together concentric with said joint and a spline on said shaft engaging one impeller hub and abutting against the other impeller when the, runners are screwed together.
