INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 2%, 1925..
ALEXANDER B. KOR-N, (3F SHICKLEY, NEBRASKA.
EGG CASE,
Application filed. June 15, 1922, Serial No. 568,537.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l. ALEXANDER B. KonN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shickley, in the county of Fillmore and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Egg Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shipping cases, and while primarily designed for use as an egg case, its general use or application is contemplated by the claim.
The present invention contemplates the provision of a shipping case which is divided by a partition into separate compartments, and which partition together with the opposed sides and end walls, in addition to the braces therefor, are susceptible of being folded in a manner to permit said case being collapsed or knocked down to produce an article of a comparatively small size which will occupy but a minimum of space for shipping purposes.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the case set up in position for use.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view of the case set up in position for use, but with the top and one side wall removed.
Figure 4 is a plan view showing the component parts of the case in collapsed posi tion or arranged prior to folding of the case.
Figure 5 is a view showing the appearance of the case when folded.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 10 indicates the bottom of the case, and rising from the edges thereof are very short walls 11 and 12 respectively. The walls 11 which are arranged at the sides extend a slight distance above the walls 12 which are arranged at the ends of the case, for a purpose to be hereinafter described. All of these walls are cut away along their upper edges to provide the spaced parallel portions 13 which are rolled to provide loops which Renewed November 12, 1924.
form part of a hinge, it being apparent that the side and end walls 141- and 15 respectively are hingedly mounted upon the upper edges of the walls 11 and 12. The side and end walls 1% and have their lower edges cut away to provide spaced parallel extensions .16 which are arranged between the parallel portions 1.3 above referred to, and also rolled to provide loops, to accommodate the hinged rods 17 which are passed. through all of said loops as clearly shown. These walls let and 15 respectively are so hinged, that the end walls may be folded initially to lie upon the bottom 10, and the side walls 14 subsequently folded on the top of the end walls, and it is with this view in mind that the walls 11 extend a slight distance above the walls 12 which form an integral part of the bottom 10. The end walls 1 are provided with side flanges 18 which brace the side walls 14, when the case is set up in position for use, as clearly illustrated in Figure 1.
Rising from the bottom 10 and arranged transversely thereof is a short wall 19 which is constructed similarly to the walls 11 and 12 to cooperate with a partition 20 in order that the latter may be hinged upon the wall 19 as shown. When folded this partition lies upon the bottom 10, but when the partition 20 is arranged in position for use, it is held vertically by the flanges 21 and 22 respectively, carried by the opposed walls 14c. These flanges are arranged to lie at the opposed sides of the partition 20 as clearly illustrated in the drawings. The end walls 15 are held in upright positions for use, by means of brace rods 25 which extend diagonally from the bottom 10 to which they are pivoted, to the adjacent end wall, being secured thereto in any suitable manner. These rods preferably terminate to provide books 26 which are received by eyes 27 carried by the end walls 15. The side walls are also held in upright position by means of a transverse rod 29 which is carried by one of the side walls 14, terminating to provide a hook 30 adapted to be received by an eye 31 carried by the other side wall. The cover for the case is indicated at 32, and the ends of said cover are received by channel-like portions 33 which are provided by so constructing the upper ends of the end walls 15. These portions have openings 35 which register with openings 36 in the cover to accommodate a catch or other suitable fastening means indicated at 36.
The case may be conveniently and easily folded to materially reduce its size for the convenience of shipping, and when so folded occupies but a m nimum of space. For this purpose, the parts are initially arranged in the manner illustrated in the plan View, atter which the partition 20 is Folded upon the bottom 10, and the end walls 13 are also tolded toward each other to lie substantially in parallelism with the bottom. The brace rods for the end walls are arranged upon the bottom 10 in crossed relaton, and the tree terminals ot' these rods are disposed in suitable openings38. The side walls 14 are then folded toward each other, one reposing upon the other in folded relation, thus producing acomparatively small compact article such as illustrated in Figure 5.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I
desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What is claimed is 2-'- A 'collapsible'case comprising a bottom having its edges upturned, side and end walls: hingedly mounted on said upturned portions and capable of being folded one above the other parallel with said bottom,
inwardly directed flanges projecting from the end walls and adapted to bear against the side walls when the latterare inset up position; diametrically. disposed connecting rods rising from the. bottom and adapted to be connected with the end walls, a transverse rod connecting the side walls, a parti tion rising from the bottom and capable of being folded substantially parallel therewith, spaced pairs of flanges carried by the opposed side walls and adapted to receive said partition to support the latterin an" e evated position, the upper edges of said end walls being of channel like formation, and a cover adapted to be slidably received by said channel. v
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature ALEXANDER B. KORN.
