LEWlS A. JAMES, or .nLK CITY, KANSAS, ass enon TD rain JAMES DISC sH arnnER COMPANY, or INDEPENDENQE, ansas, A conroanr on on Kansas.
SHARPENER.
Application filed. December 12, 1922.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS A. JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elk City, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Disk Sharpener, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a disk sharpener especially useful in sharpening the disks used upon agricultural instruments such as disk harrows and has for its principal object to provide a device of this nature which is easily operated and may be adjusted for use in conjunction with various sized disks.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a sharpener of this nature which is simple and efficient in construction, reliable in operation, inexpensive to manufacture, durable, strong,-and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in View as will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is an elevation of my invention showing the same in use upon a harrow,
Figure 2 is a perspective of the device,
Figure 3 is an enlarged detailed elevation particularly of the slidable bracket and knife, and
Figure 4 is a detailed section taken through the device showing the same associated with a disk. 7
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the device consists of an elongated handle 1 formed with a hooked extension 2 at one end. This hooked extension 2 is engageable with an axle of the disk to be sharpened and is preferably held in engagementwith the axle by the usual nuts or in any other suitable manner.
A bracket 3 is slidably mounted on the handle 1 and in the present instance consists of an L-shaped bar 4 having a block 5 mounted thereon adjacent the smaller leg 6 of the bar 1 and a plate 7 is attached to the block 5 and terminates a slight distance from the leg 6 and the handle 1 is received between the legs of the bar 1, the block 5 and the plate 7 as is indicated to advantage Serial No. 606,556.
in Figures 2 and 3. The bar 4, block 5, and plate 7 are held together by a bolt 8 or in any other suitable manner. A knife 9 is fixed to the shorter leg 6 of the bar 4: by a bolt 10 so that the angular relation thereof may be changed as may be found desirable. A guide plate 11 is fixed to the end of the bar 1 and extends at right angles therefrom and it will also be noted that the plane of the plate 11 diverges slightly from the plane of the longer leg of the bar 4. When the hooked extension 2 of the handle 1 is engaged with the axle of the disk such as is illustrated in Figure 1 the disk is engaged by the knife substantially as illustrated in Figure 4 and the guide plate 11 will also be engaged with the disk so as to steady the knife and the bracket 3. The knife will be self-adjusting in respect to the size of the disk and when engaged with the disk cannot be pushed from engagement thereby by the disk because of the binding action which will take place between the block 5 and the shorter leg 6 and also between the longer leg of the bar a and the plate 7. This binding action will also be aided by the operator sitting upon the seat of the harrow pushing the handle outwardly or so as to bring the blade of the knife in firm engagement with the disk. Thus the disk may be sharpened as the harrow is moved along but of course the same result may be accomplished by the operator moving the disk or the handle as may be convenient.
I have, in the present instance, shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, and it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is A device of the kind described comprising an elongated handle having a hook at one end adapted to engage around the securing bolt of a harrow disk, a bracket slidably mounted on the handle and provided with means for clamping in adjusted position, said bracket having ends arranged at right angles to each other and being secured to the handle at the angle, one of said ends extending in the plane of the hook, a guide lit finger secured to the last mentioned end and inclined away from the plane of the hook, and a knife secured to the remaining end of the bracket and inclined similarly to the guide finger whereby both guide and knife lie on the same side of the disk in operation and prevent twisting of said handle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
LEWIS A. JAMES.
