To all whom it may concern:
United States, and residents of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Dental Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in dental instruments, more particularly to dental instruments adapted for use in removing dental crowns, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of the present invention is to provide asimple, reliableand eflicientdevice which affords facilities for the removal expeditiously of eithera gold crown or a gold crown abutment bridge from a tooth or teeth.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which is adapted to be readily adjusted and manipulated toefli'ect removal of a dental gold crown or gold crown abutment bridge irrespective of the position of the gold crown or gold crown abutment bridge in the mouth of a patient.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, considered in conjunctionwith the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a gold crown and gold crown abutment bridge remover embodying the invention,

An instrument embodying the invention 7 comprises anelongated body 1 provided at one end with a laterally extending arm 2. The body 1 maybe enlarged adjacent to its other end as at 3 toprovide a portion which is adapted "to be gripped and firmly held between the fingers and thumb "of a hand of an operator.

The body 1 is flattened at the side thereof proximate to the lateral arm 2 as indicated at and a slot 6 coextensive in length with the bore 4 extends from the face 5 of the body 1 radially inward to the bore 4, the width of the slot 6 being less than the diameterof the bore 4.
The bore 4 and slot 6 form a guide-way for the stem 7 of a traveller which is designated generally 8 and which is formed with a laterally extending arm 9 at one end thereof. The stem 7 of the traveller is circular in cross sectional contour for the greater part of its length and is adapted to slide in the bore 4. The arm 9 has a portion 10 reduced in width which merges the arm 9 into the stem 7 and is adapted to slide in the slot '6, shoulders as at 11 thus being formed at the juncture of the portion 10 and the remaining portion of the arm 9 for engaging with the flat face 5 of the body at opposite sides of the slot 6, whereby the traveller will be adapted to move longitudinally of the body but is held against oscillatory movement about the axis of the stem 7 relatively to the body 1.
The second end portion of the stem 7 of the traveller is provided with external screw threads 12 adapted to engage with the threads of a knurled nut 13 which is adapted to turn inabutting relation to the second end of the bodyv 1. It of course will be understood that the stem 7 and connecting portionlO are insertedin the bore 4 and slot 6 respectively at the second end of the body 1 and the traveller then is moved longitudinally of the'body luntil the nut 13 on the threaded end portion l2is in abutting relation to the second named end of the body 1. The nut 13 is adjusted on the threaded end portion 12 initially so that the arm 9 will extend inclose underlying relation to the arm 12 when the nut 13 abuts the second named end of the body 1.
The arm 2 is provided with a pointed pin 16 which is upstanding from the upper face of the arm 2 adjacent to the outerend of the latter, or in other words is disposed in parallel relation to the axial line of the body 1. Lateral notches 17 extend in the arm 2 at opposite sides of the base of the pin 16. The armfi9 of the traveller terminates at its outer end substantially flush with the outer end of the arm 2. The arm 9 provided ad]acent to its outer end with a transverse bore, the axis of which lies in a plane with the arm 2.

A pin 19 having a knurled head 20 at one end is adapted to extend through a transverse bore or opening 18 and has the other end portion thereof threaded for engagement with a knurled nut 21. A pair of grappling arms or hook members 22 is provided. Each of the grappling arms 22 has a downwardly and inwardly directed hook at one end thereof, as indicated at 23 and is provided adjacent to its other end with an opening adapted to receive the pin 19, whereby the respective grappling members 22 may be mounted on the pin 19 to extend vertically through the notches 17 so that the hook portions thereof will be disposed above the upper end of the pin 16 when the traveller is in the position in respect to the body 1 illustrated in Figures 1, at and 5 and the grappling arms 22.are in the position illustrated in Figure 5. The grappling arms 22 preferably are bowed outward ad jacent to their normally upper or hookel ends.
The arm 215 provided with a vertical slot 24 extending longitudinally thereof from a point adjacent to the juncture of the arm 2 and the body 1 to a point nearly at but short of the juncture of the pin 16 A pin slidable along the slot 24 has a lower end portion 25 extending vertically through the slot and an upper end portion 26 similar to the pin 16 upstanding from the arm 2 in parallel relation to the pin 16, the pins 25-26 being held against vertical movement upward in respect to the arm 2 because of the engagement of an enlargement or expanded extreme lower end portion of the .part 25 with the lower face of they arm 2 and being held against vertical movement downward in respect to the arm 2 because of the engagement of a flange or collar 27 at the juncture of the portions 25 and 26 with the upper face of the arm 2. Obviously, any suitable means may be provided for retaining the pins 23 and 26 in the slot 24 and for sliding movement along the latter.
T The arm 9 is provided with a slot 28 extending longitudinally thereof. The slot 28 is horizontal and preferably is coextensive in length with the vertical slot 24 in the arm 2. A pin 29 having a knurled head 30 at one end and being adapted for engagement at its other end with a nut 31 is adapted to extend through the slot 28 and is slidable along the latter. The pin 29 is adapted to carry a pair of grappling arms or book members 32 which are identical in essential respects with the hook members 22. The
hook members 32 are adapted to extend at opposite sides of the arm 2 andv in flanking relation to the projecting upper end portion of the pins 2526, the hooked ends of thearms 32 terminating above the level of the upper ends of the pins 2526.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. 'When a gold cap crown is to be removed from the tooth, a small opening is drilled through the occlusal surface of the crown if the tooth is a bicusped or molar or through the lingual surface of the crown if the tooth is an in- I cisor and the device is disposed in such posi .tion that the point of the pin 16 will enter the opening in the occlusal or lingual surface of the crown and will bear against the tooth. The grappling arms 22 then are secured by manipulating the nut 21 in engagement with the edges of the crown. The applied position of the grappling members 22 is illus trated in Figure 5 in which a crown and a tooth are shown more or lessdiagrammatically and respectively are indicated at and 34. The nut 13 then is manipulated to cause the traveller to move downward along the body 1, grappling members 22 being moved downward through the guide notches 17 and thus positively held in engagement with the edge of the crown which therefore will be pulled from the tooth.
In the event that a gold crown abutment bridge is to be removed, the pin 16 is placed against a tooth at one end of the abutment bridge, the pins 25-26 placed against a tooth at the other end of the abutmentbridge and the grappling members 32 are arranged with the hooks thereof in engagement with the edge or upper end of the abutment bridge. 2. A device of the character described comprising a body having a lateral arm, a traveller mounted toslide longitudinally of the body, an upstanding pin carried by said arm, a pair of grappling arms carried by said t aveller, the respective grappling arms extending at opposite sides of said lateral arm and'of the pin on the latter, and terminating at their upper ends above the level of the upper end of said pin.
3. A device of the character described comprising a body having a lateral arm, a traveller mounted to slide longitudinally of the body, an upstanding pin carried by said arm, a pair of grappling arms carried by said traveller, the respective grappling arms extending at opposite sides of said lateral arm and of the pin on the latter, said lateral arm having notches at opposite sides of slid pin for guiding said grappling arms.

5. A dental instrument of the character described comprising a bodyhaving a lateral arm at one end thereof, a traveller mounted to slide longitudinally of the body and held against rotation about the axis of the body independently of the body, said traveller having a lateral arm corresponding in position to the lateral arm of the body, a pin extending from the upper face of said lateral arm adjacent to the outer end of the latter and in parallel relation to the axial line of the body, a pair of grappling arms pivotallv supported on the lateral arm of said traveller, said grappling arms having hooks at the free ends thereof and being adapted to be swung to position to extend in straddling relation to the lateral arm of the body and at opposite sides of said pin, said grappling arms terminating at their hooked ends above the level of the upper end of said pin when the lateral arm of the traveller is proximate to the lateral arm of the body, and means for actuating said traveller to slide the latter along the body away from the lateral arm of the body.
6. A dental instrument of the character described comprising a body having a later al arm at one end thereof, a traveller mounted to slide longitudinally of the body and held against rotation about the axis of the body independently of the body, said traveller having a lateral arm corresponding in position to the lateral arm of the body. a pin extending from the upper face of said lateral arm adjacent to the outer end of the latter and in parallel relation to the axial line of the body. a pair of grappling arms pivotally supported on the lateral arm of said traveller, said grappling arms having hooks at the free ends thereof, and being adapted to be swung to position to extend in straddling relation to the lateral arm of the body and at opposite sides of said pin, said grappling arms tern'linating at their hooked ends above the level of the upper end of said pin when the lateral arm of the trav eller is proximate to the lateral arm of the body, means for actuating said traveller to slide the latter along the body away from the lateral arm of the body, said lateral arm of the body having lateral notches at opposite sides of said pin for guiding said grappling arms in the movement of said traveller away from the lateral arm of the body.
7. A dental instrument of the character described comprising a body having a lateral arm at one end thereof, a traveller mounted to slide longitudinally of the body and held against rotation about the axis of the body independently of the body, said traveller having a lateral arm corresponding in position to the lateral arm of the body, a pin extending from the upper face of said lateral arm adjacent to the outer end of the latter and in parallel relation to the axial line of the body, a pair of grappling arms pivotally supported on the lateral arm of said traveller, said grappling arms having hooks at the free ends thereof, and being adapted to be swung to position to extend in straddling relation to the lateral armof the body and at opposite sides of said pin, said rappling arms terminating at their hooked ends above the level of the upper end of said pin when the lateral arm of the traveller is proximate to the lateral arm of the body. and means for actuating said traveller to slide the latter along the body away from the lateral arm of the body, and adjustable means for holding said grappling members clamped against opposite sides of a tooth.
8. In a dental instrument of the charac ter described, an elongated body having a laterally extending arm at one end thereof. said arm having a vertical slot therein, an upstanding pin having a portion received in said slot and slidable along the slot, a traveller mounted to slide longitudinally of the body and having a lateral arm extending in underlying parallel relation to the lateral arm of the body, said lateral arm having a horizontal slot therein coextensive in length with said vertical slot in the lateral arm of the body, a pivot element extending through said horizontal slot and being slidable along the latter, a pair of grappling members re spectively supported on said pivot element on opposite sides of the second named lateral arm, said pivot members having hooks at the free ends thereof and being adapted to be swung to position to straddle said first named lateral arm and to terminate at their hooked ends above the level of said pin and at opposite sides of the latter, and means adjustably engageable with said pivot elements at the ends of the latter for holding said grappling members in clamping relation to a tooth above the upper end of said pin, a second pin upstanding from the lateral arm of said body adjacent to the outer end of the lateral arm, and a second pair of grappling members carried by the lateral arm of the traveller, the respective second named grappling members being adapted tobe swung to position to extend in straddling relation tothe first named lateral member at opposite sides of the second named pin.
