Description
Dec. 30, 1924. sz ggg A; SEYFF'ERTH CONCRETE GARBAGE CAN Filed Feb. 6, 1922 Patented Dec. 313, i924,
UNH'ED FFP CONCRETE GAEBAGE CAN.
Application filed February 6, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. ALFRED SnYrrnn'rrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Concrete Garbage Cans, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to refuse receptacles, and more particularly to a concrete garbage can.
It is a purpose of the invention to provide a concrete refuse receptacle of the character referred to above which ismade up of a base section and a top section. said sections being preferably made with wall portions having the opposite faces thereof made in such a form that the top section can be set on the base in any desired position. The opposite faces are provided with interlocking means whereby the top section is held in any desired position on the base.
It is a further purposeof the invention to provide a refuse receptacle of the character referred to above which is provided with a floor therein which slopes from the edges thereof toward the middle, thus preventing the leakage of any liquid from the receptacle at the doors or side edges thereof.
It is still a further purpose of the invention to provide a hinged cover for a receptacle of the above mentioned character which is provided with a handle having integral means thereon which acts as a stop for limiting the opening movement of the cover and to provide a cover that overlaps the material of the receptacle adjoining the opening which the cover closes in such a manner as to substantially seal the opening.
It is another object of the invention to provide a refuse receptacle with an opening in the side thereof which is closed by means of a door preferably hinged at the top of the opening, and to provide a facing for said opening, of metal, which will prevent the breaking away of the corners of the concrete by engagement of a shovel with the concrete when the shovel is inserted through the opening. Said facing or reinforcement is preferably made of angle iron, one leg of the angle overlying the outer face of the receptacle and the other leg thereof overlying the wall of the opening.
It is also an object of the invention to Serial No. 584,538?
provide new and improved means for fastening a hinge carrying member to the concrete body portion of a receptacle of the above mentioned character, which comprises a headed member mounted in the concrete and having a locking member, such as a nut, screwthreaded thereon and embedded in the concrete, and having a second locking member, such as a nut, mounted thereon which clamps the hinge carrying member between said nuts.
Other objects and advantages of the in vention will appear as the description of the accompanying drawings proceeds. However, I desire to have it distinctly understood that I do not intend to limit myself to the exact details shown or described, but that I intend to include as part of my invention all such obvious changes and modifications of parts as would occur to a person skilled in this art, and as would fall within the scope of the claim.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved concrete garbage can;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the garbage can showing the top in one position in full lines and in another position in dotted lines; and
Fig. 4c is a fragmentary sectional view showing the means for anchoring the hingecarrying plates to the concrete body portion of the receptacle.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the improved refuse receptacle comprises a base portion 5 and a top portion 6, the base portion 5 being provided with a bottom or floor 8 and with side walls 9. One of said side walls 9 is provided with a projecting portion 10 having an inclined front wall 11 and having an opening 12 therein. The top section 6 is provided with side walls 13 and with an inclined top portion 1 1 terminating in a raised flange or rib 15 extending around the opening 16 in said top.
Mounted on the top is a cover member 17 which is provided with the downwardly turned edge portion or bead 18, which embraces the rib or rim 15 to provide a substantially tight closure between the cover 17 and hinged at 19 to the plate 20, said plate 20 being secured to the member 6 by means of the bolts 21. As will be seen from Fig. 4, the plate 20 is securely held in position in the concrete of the member 6 by means of g V v 1,521,398
the bolt 21 which is provided with a head 22 embedded in the concrete and with a nut 23 which is screw threaded on the screwthreaded portion 24 of the bolt, and which is also embedded in the concrete, and which is provided with a nut 25 cooperating with the screw threads 2 to clamp, the plate 20 to the top member 6.- Secured to the cover 17 by any suitable securing means, such as to the rivets 26, is the handle 27, which is provided with an integral rearwardly err-- tending finger 28 which is adapted to engage with the top 14 to limit the opening movement of the cover 17. The top section 6 is provided with a groove 29 on the lower end "portions or faces 30 of the walls 13' vent the concrete at the corner from being broken away by engagement of the shovel used for emptying the refuse out of the receptacle therewith. The frame is secured to the concrete by means ofthe bolts 21 in a similar manner to that in which the plate 20' is secured to the concrete bymeans of the holtsQl. The door 36 is hinged to the bolts 33 of the frame by meansof the hinges 37, and is provided with a hook 33 which engages with'the lug 39 to hold the preventing leakage of the same through the doors. V 1
It will be seen that due to the fact that the opposite faces of the side walls 9, 9' and 13 are made of the same shape and of the same dimensions, and due to the fact that a tongue and groove connection is provided for anchoringrthe top to the base, the top section of thereceptacle can be placed in any desired position on the bottom or base, thus for example, desired, the top sectioncan be so placed on the base that insteat of the hinges for the cover 17 being on the same side of the cam as the door 36, as shown in 3 in full lines, the same can be placed in a directly oppos te position and if desired, the top can be placed in such a position that the hinges ofthe cover'are placed as shown in dotted lines in Fig, 3, or in the position directly opposite to that shown in dotted lines, thus making it possible to have the top open in any desired direction that is convenient for emptying refuse into the receptacle.
Having thus described'my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by U. S. Letters Patent is A concrete refuse receptacle having an opening therein, a door for closing said opening, hingesfor said door, a metallicframe on which said hinges are mounted and bolts permanently embedded in said concrete for securing SillCl' frame in position, said bolts having heads embedded 1n said concrete, locking memloers screwthreadedly engaging'the same,said memlzers being embedded in said concrete flush with the surface thereof, andmeans screwthreadedly engag:
ing the portions thereof projecting from said concrete for detachably. clamping saidframe in position on said. concrete and in engagement with said locking members.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 31st day of January,zA. D. 1922. i 7
ALFRED SEYFFERTH.
