L-D.JENS$EN MATERIAL HANDLING APPARATUS Filed Oct. 6. 1922 Patented Dec. 23, 1924.
UNITED STATES LAURI'IZ DORENFELDT JENSSEN, F LOKKEN VERK, NEAR TRONDHJEM, NORWAY.
MATERIAL-HANDLING APPARATUS.
Application filed October 6, 1922. Serial No. 592,799.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LAURITZ DORENFELDT JENSSEN, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Lokken Verk, near Trondhjem, Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Material-Handling Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters orfigiires of reference marked thereon, which Form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to an apparatus for loading bulk material goods into cars, into other containers or into transp0rt ing devices such as conveying belts etc., and it may be utilized especially in mine-plants in order to load the outbroken ore upon the cars by which the material is carried out from the mine. According to the present invention a transportable conveyer-like mechanism and an inclined plane are made use of, along which the shovel, scoop or the like for conveying the material is pulled up and emptied.
The invention is characterized substantially by this that the car or trolley carrying the inclined plane or the inclined channel, carries also an outrigger with sheave and a motor-driven winch serving to wind oft or up an endless chain, steel wire or the like in which the shovel is inserted as a part thereof. The steel wire runs over the said sheave and also over another guiding sheave so that the shovel according to the running direction of the winch may be caused to effect a back and forward motion between the heap of goods where it is filled and a suitable point upon the inclined plane where it is emptied in known manner.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 shows diagrammatically a constructional form, and
Fig. 2 shows the construction of a shovel.
Referring to Fig. 1 the inclined plane or the inclined channel 1 is by means of a bearing 2 turnably attached to a trolley 3 which may be passed back and forward within the mine passage l or upon another base according to the use of the apparatus. The inclined plane 1 is provided with an upwardly directed outrigger 5 with a sheave 6. Moreover, the inclined plane carries a winch 7 indicated diagrammatically in the drawing. A steel wire 8, one end of which is attached to the winding-up drum of the winch passes over the sheave 6 and down to the beam 9 of a shovel 10, the rear part of which is also attached to the winch drum by means of another wire 11 passing over a sheave 12. As shown in the drawing the two wires 8 and 11 in combination with the shovel 9, form an endless conveyor-like system, in which the shovel with beam constitutes one member. The sheave 12 is presumed to be fixedly journalled in some manner, which in case of utilizing the apparatus in a mine may be el tected thereby that the sheave by means of links or arms 13 is connected with a pipe 14 which is braced across the mine passage against its two side walls. The wires 8, 11
are wound up on the winch drum so that one of them is wound olt when the other one is wound up during the rotation of the drum. By causing the drum to rotate in one direction or the other by means of a motor mounted upon the trolley or upon the inclined plane, the shovel 10 is caused to move either from the heap of material 15, where it is filled with the material automatically by passing along its upper surface, on the inclined plane, upwards the latter and, after having arrived at a suitable height, it is emptied, or the shovel is passed the opposite way from the inclined plane back to the heap of material. Thus it will be seen that the material from the heap 15 is transported to the loading car 16 by being shoved along the bottom 4 of the mine passage and upwards upon the inclined plane.
The shovel 10 may be rigidly attached to the comparatively long beam 9, and in such case it tends to maintain such a position that it isfilled automatically by being pulled along the upper surface of the head of ma terial and is also emptied automatically upon arrival at the, upper portion of the inclined plane. But it may also be suitable to connect the shovel turnably to the beam 9 by means of a pin and a releasable mechanism in such a manner that the shovel normally has a certain filling position when pulled along the heap of material, whereas it is re leased automatically upon arrival at a certain point on the inclined plane, whereafter it is turned a small angle (60 have been found suitable) during the further movement of the wire 8, whereby the material is left upon the inclined plane. The said mechanism is suitably released by means of a stop adjustably attached to the inclined plane.
Fig. 2 illustrates one example of such ,a mechanism. The shovel is turnably at tached to the beam 9 by means of a b0lt-19 and is provided with a releasing device, preferably in the form of a double lever 21 attached by a pin to the upper part of the shovel. The lower part of said lever is by a pin 22 pivotally connected to a link 23 which is in turn pivoted to the beam 9 by a pin 24. The normal position of the arm 21 and link 23 is that shown in Fig. 2 wherein thethree pins 20, 22 and 24 are in the same line, whereby the shovel will be locked in the position shown. However, when the shovel during the operation is passed upwards upon the inclined plane and the upper part of the lever 21 strikes against a stop 25 attached to the plane, the lever is turned through an angle and by means of the link 23 it will then tilt the shovel along with it, so that the pins 20, 22 and 24: are brought out of line. Owing to the pressure of the material against the lower part of the shovel the latter will then be carried further to the dotted position, and the ma terial is deposited upon the inclined plane. it the return movement the parts will adjust themselves automatically as shownflin full lines in the drawing.
A releasing mechanism of this kind is suitable, because it will be possible to let the apparatus operate also during the time spent for shifting the loading car 16. In such case the shovel 10 is emptied every time at a suitable place of the inclined plane, which is thereby successively charged with material during the car shifting operation. As soon as this shifting has been fulfilled,
the shovel is caused to move upwards along the inclined plane, thereby shovelling'the whole mass down into the new loading car. Y The purpose of arranging the inclined plane tiltably upon the trolley is, of course, to enable its swinging down into horizontal position, when the apparatus is to be trans- .ported or removed. The inclined plane which besides may be made as an 1ncl1ned channel, is fixedly maintained in position within. the mine passage by means of bows 17 placed around a pipe 18 braced across the mine passage and which may be attached or released by means of screws.
The described apparatus may be used at any place where there is a question of transport, removal, loading or the 'likeof bulkmaterial, consequently not only of ore within or outside of mines, but for instance also of coal,-coke, stone, corn etc.
In cases where the bottom t is uneven, planks or other supporting members may be placed thereon, upon which the shovel 10 may slide.
