UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo THOMAS WTORSVVIOK, OF GUELPH, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR CONVERTING MOTION.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l5 [,949, dated June 9, 1874; application filed February 19, 1874.
To all whom it may con-cern:
Be it' known that I, THoMAs WoRswrcK, of Guelph, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a new and Improved Device for Converting Motion; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the means ot' counection between a rotary shaft and reci procating rod or pitman, whereby the stroke of the latter may be varied with convenience and dispatch.
In the drawing, the standard or frame A has three arms or branches that support a cylinder, B, shaft C, and plunger D. The shaft is arranged horizontally at right angles to the plunger, and carries an ordinary fast and loose pulley. The plunger has a slotted cross-arm or yoke, E. The wrist-pin F works in the slot of said yoke, and, as the head G fixed axially' on the shaft C revolves, causes the reciprocation of the plunger. The wrist-pin is attached to a slide, which is adjusted in a diametrical slot in the face ot' the head G by means of a screw, H, that passes through it. Thus the distance between the wrist-pin and shaft or aXisC maybe increased or diminished at pleasure, and the throw of the plunger correspondingly regulated. I is a stop for the pin F, which is adjustable by a nut screwed on a stem projecting through a slot in the wrist-pin plate. The position of this stop-piece indicates the adjustment of the pin F for ordinary work-say, for runnin g a pump. The pin may, however, be adjusted outward from the shaft C, to increase the length of stroke ofthe plunger, and thereby the quantity ot water thrown, ina given time. When the pin is adjusted back in contact with the stop I the action goes on as before. Thus said stop saves time and labor, which would be otherwise uselessly expended at every change of the adjustment of the wrist-pin.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Iatent, is-
The combination, with the slotted reciprocating yoke E and revolving slotted plate G, of the wrist-pin F, adjusting-Screw H, and stop I, said screw being arranged in a diametrical slot of the plate, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
