INDIANA, A CORPORATION OF INDIANA.
CO'OLING TRANSFER, DEVICE FOR GLASSWARE.
Application filed January 25, 1923. Serial No. 615,424.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. J OHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Cooling Transfer Device for Glassware, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, etficient device by means of which freshly formed, possibly still plastic, glass ware may be received from forming mechanism and supported, for a suflicient period to become set, in such manner that it will not settle, under a portion of its own weight, and thereby become distorted; successive portions of the apparatus being automatically presented to charging position.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is an elevation, in partial vertical section, of one form of my invention, and Fig. 2, a plan, in a partial horizontal section, of the same.
In the drawings, 10 indicates a suitable, portable pedestal having a central column 11 to which is secured a bracket 12 carrying a horizontal annular cam-track 13.
J ournalled upon column 11 above bracket 12 is a central sleeve 14 of a rotary table 15 having a ware-receiving upper surface in which are formed a plurality of pockets 16 arranged in a circumferential series. Mounted in each pocket 16 is a ware-supporting plunger 17 having a stem 18 projecting downwardly through the bottom of its pocket and resting upon cam-track 13.
Secured to column 11 near its upper end is a vertically adjustable collar 19 upon which is supported a finger-carrying plate 20 journalled on the column and provided with a series of radial guides 21 corresponding in number and arrangement to the pockets 16. Plate 20 is connected with table 15, so as to rotate therewith, by a series of bolts 22, the efi'ective lengths of the bolts being proportioned tocorrespond with the setting of collar 19.
Mounted in each guide 21 is a radiallymovable waresupporting fork or member 23 adapted to engage a hardened upper portion of a piece of ware 24 so that said ware will be suspended therefrom.
In order to advance table 15 step by step I have shown, in the present drawings, the following mechanism: Secured to sleeve 14 is a ratchet wheel 30 having teeth in number "and, arrangement corresponding to pocket 16. Associated with said ratchet wheel, and journalled on sleeve 14, is a pawlcarrier 31 provided with pawl 32 adapted to engage the teeth of ratchet wheel 30. The carrier 31 is reciprocated by a suitable pitman 33.
Each finger 23 is provided with a pin or roller 34 and secured to the upper end of column 11, above finger plate 20, in position to control the paths of movement of rollers 34, are two cams 35 and 36.
The operation is as follows: Station A, Fig. 2, may be considered the charging station, the adjacent finger 23 having been retracted by cam 35 and the adjacent plunger 16 having been raised to a point where, in co-operation with the upper sur-' face of table 15, the ware may be placed over the plunger and in radial alinement with a finger 23.
When the table is advanced toward the station B, plunger 16 will rise so as to lift the ware to a point where finger 23 may be projected into position to support the ware, by the act-ion of cam 36. As the plunger moves to station C, cam-track 13 is so formed as to permit the plunger to descend away from the bottom of the ware, the ware being supported with its bottom slightly above the upper surface of table 15 thereby preventing any settlement of the ware under a portion of its own weight. By successive movements of the table, the plunger under consideration advances to- Station D where, just before this station is reached, cam 13 serves toraise the plunger into engagement with the ware and raise the ware slightly from the supporting finger whereupon, as
station E is reached, the supporting finger is retracted by cam 35 and plunger 16 permitted to descend so that the ware may rest upon the table and be withdrawn by any suitable means, automatic or otherwise. Such means does not form any part of my present invention. 1
The apparatus may be readily transported from place to place so as to be set in any position convenient for the reception and handling of the ware. It will be obvious, of course, that the discharge may take place at some station earlier than station E by a proper circumferential shifting of portions of the cam track 13.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a cooling table, the combination of a suitably supported rotatable Ware-receiving table arranged to receive the formed Ware from the forming machine and provided With a plurality of vertically movable Warereceiving plunger-s, a corresponding plurality of Ware-supporting elements for receiving the Ware from the plungers and supporting! it until it takes a set, means by which the plungers are automatically raised i and lowered to vary the position of the Ware rel ative to the table, and means by which the Ware-supporting elements are automatically shifted into and out of Ware-supporting position.
2. In a cooling table, a supporting pedestal, a column carried thereby, a Warereceiving' table journalled on the column, arranged to receive the formed Ware from the forming machine and provided With a plurality of plunger pockets, a plurality of Ware-supporting plungers mounted in said pockets and projected downwardly through the table, a cam track supported by the pedestal and supporting the plunger-s to automatically raise and lower the same as the table is rotated, a plurality of shiftable Ware-supporting members carried by the table corresponding in number and arrangement With the Ware-supporting plungers for receiving the Ware from the plungers andsupporting it until it takes a set, and cam members carried by the column for automatically shifting said waresupporting members to and from Waresupporting position. i
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand at Terre Haute, Indiana, this 17th day of December, A. D. one thousand nine hundred and tvventytwo.
WILLIAM H. JOHNSON.
