Description
Patented Dec. 9, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY I. LOEWER, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
LAST.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. Lonwnn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lasts, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates lasts and more particularly to the type in wh ch a fore part and the heel part are separate and are connected between the two parts. An object of this invention is to proyide-a detaining means of novel construction which will make the last inexpensive to manufacture, and which will be strong, durable and effective in use.
To these and other ends, the invention cons" ts of certain arts and combinations of par all of whic will be hereinafter described: the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
the drawings Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section throngi the last, showing the detaining means 100 in the last in expanded positlon;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the last, showing the detaining means unlocking the last so that it may be collapsed;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view, showing the last in colla sed condition; and
Fig. 4 is a section on t e line 4-4, Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the forepart and 2 the heel part. These two parts are connected gether by a bonding means, which in this embodiment comprises two plates 3 mounted on two pivot pins 4 and 5. The pivot pm 4 bridges a kerf 6 in the forepart, while the ivot pin 5 bridges a kerf 7 in the heel part.
these kerfs the bonding plates 3 operate.
One of the pivot pins preferably the pivot in 4 on the forepart serves also as a pivot or a detent or latch 8, such latch being arranged between the two plates 3 and extending upwardly therefrom into and through the upper end of the kerf 7 where it is provided with an operating portion or finger iece 9, an abutment 10 is formed on this getent or locking device and this abutment is adapted to coo erate with the abutment 11 in the form 0 a pin bridging the kerf 7 above the pivot pin 5. It will be noted that when the last is locked in an expanded condition, the abutment 11 lies against the abutment 10 and the pivot 4 of the detent, so that there is a pulling strain upon the detent, when in locking position. A spring 12 in the form of a helix is seated in a pocket 13 at the forward end of the kerf 6 and extends upwardly and rearwardly to enga e over a In 14 projecting forwardly from t e detent. his s ring tends normally to move the detent to l dcking position. The plates 3 may be spaced apart adjacent the pivot 5 by a lateral lug on the plate 3 and abutting the other plate.
The joint between the two last parts is preferably in the form of two transverse cuts 16 and 17 at oblique angles to each other and connected by a short horizontal cut 18 forming cooperating shoulders on the forepart and the heel part. It is apparent that in collapsing the last the forward portion of the heel part moves upwardly in advance of the rear portlon of the heel part and owing to the eccentric arrangement of the pinll with reference to the pm 5, the spring acting on the detent tends to move the lower forward edge 19 of the heel part in abutment with the rear lower portion of the forepart, thus maintaining the last in a collapsed condition, while permitting the last to be readily moved to exlpanded condition.
What I c aim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A last comprising a fore part, a heel part, bonding means ivotally connected to the fore part and to e heel part, a detent pivoted on the pivot of the bonding means on one of such parts and having an abutment facing towards the pivot, and an abutment 0n the other last art for cooperation with the abutment on t e detent, such last mentioned abutment being arranged eccentric with reference to the pivot of the bonding means on the last part on which the abutment is arranged, and lying, when the last is expanded and the abutment on the detent is in engagement therewith, between the abutment on the detent and the pivot of the detent.
2. A last comprising a fore part, a heel part, bonding means pivotally connected to the fore part and to the heel part, a detent pivotally mounted on the ivot of the bondt-rieally to the pivot of the bonding means mg means arranged on t e fore part, said on such' last part and lying, when engaged detent extending upwardly through the top by the abutment on the detent at a point be- 1 of the heel part to provide an operating portween the abutment of the detent and the 5 tion, and having an abutment thereon faepivot of the detent.
ing toward the pivot of the detent, and. an abutment on the heel part arranged ecoen- HENRY F. LOEWER.
