Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,17 9, dated June 24, 1856.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANoIs M. ENGLISH, of I-Iopkinsville, in the county of Christian and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mode of De taching Horses from Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 shows a whiflletree with traces in drawing position. Fig. 2 shows same wit-h one end detached from trace. Fig. 3 shows both traces detached.

The nature of my invention consists in the combination of a lever hinged to, and resting against the pin in the end of the whiflletree; so that when drawing the load the long arm of the lever will be drawn against the pin by the trace; and when the long arm is lifted by connection with the cord leading to the driver, the trace willbe disconnected, the details of construction and operation, will readily be understood by the following description.

In the drawing V V is the whiflietree, and T T the traces.

P P are the pins and L L the levers hinged or jointed to the pins as shown in the drawing.

When the horse is attached the traces draw the long arms of the levers against the pins, and are prevented from slipping off by the form of the lever, as will be seen in Fig. 1.

When the horse is to be disengaged from the vehicle, the cord C is drawn, turning lever L and at once throwing off trace T, as shown in Fig. 2.

The trace T immediately draws the other end of the whiffletree around, turns lever L and is at once disengaged, as shown in Fig. 3.

I claim The herein described combination of pins P P with the levers L L constructed, ar ranged, and operating substantially as, and for the purposes set forth.
