in frames which can be' adjusted to withdraw the rolls from the platen when it is desired to arrange the paper upon the platen. These combined feeding, guiding, and pressureirolls cooperate with pressure rolls which normall hold the paper, after passin around the root of the platen, with a yiel ing pressure on the upper portion of the platen. Means have heretofore been rovided, and as shown in prior patents issued to the Royal Typewriter Company, Inc., for so moving t ese upper pressure and guiding rolls that they may be changed from their normal or working position on top of the platen to a position above and in rear of the'pl'aten and in rear of the paper table.
In the Royal Standard machine, the top pressure rolls are mounted on a horizontally arranged rod extending from one end of the platen to the other and beyond the ends thereof, and this rod is mounted in what is called a bail comprising side arms or members which are pivotally connected with the carriage frame 1n rear of the platen and a 40 considerable distance therefrom. These side arms of the bail are braced by a rod which extends from one side arm to the other, and springs are employed for holding the rolls on the platen. platen, it sometimes happens that in a careless use of the machine the bail is bent or misshaped so that a pressure when one side of the machine bears with greater pressure on the platen than the roll on'the opposite side thereof. In carrying out my invention I employ a bail as heretofore and preferably the rod which carries the pressure rolls is mounted in bearings which permit the rod to move vertically or radially towards and fromthe platen and yielding devices, such as coiled springs, are arranged in the bearings and exert pressure on the opposite ends of the rod tending at all times to press the rolls toward the platen. These springs operate automatically. This way of mountin' the roll carrying rod in-open bearings an employing springs in said bearings is, however, claimed in my application Serial No. 710,797, filed May 3, 1924.
In the present application I have shown, described and claimed another way of regulating the pressure of the rolls on the platen. I do this by employing pivot screws for the rear ends of the roll carrying arms which have eccentric portions enabllng me to so adjust the pivots on opposite sides of the machine as to cause the arms of the bail to so hold the rod which carries the pressure rolls as to cause said rolls to bear with equal pressure upon the laten. In the accompanying diawings:- Figure 1 is a sectional view with parts in elevation showing how m improvements are applied to the bail w ich carries the upper pressure rolls.
Figure 2 is a plan view of parts of the mechanism shown in Figure 1.
Parts of a typewriting machine carriage frame are indicated at A, and B indicates a platen. C indicates a shift rail. The paper table is indicated at D and E indicates the paper pan or guide beneath the platen. One. of the arms of the bail is indicated at G.
The two arms, one on eachside of the machine, are of substantially the same shape and construction. The arm Gr is pivoted to its front end each arm G is enlarged as indicated and formed with a vertical or radial slot T and the roll carrying rod M has its ends mounted in these. slots which are of such length as' to allow the opposite ends of the rod to have slight vertical or radial movement. Each arm G is formed with a laterally projecting lug g and between this lug and one end of the rod M is interposed a spring S which tends to press the rod M with the rolls towards the platen and hold the rolls with yielding pressure thereon. This feature properly considered is claimed in my application Serial No. 710,797, filed May 3, 1924.
The outer ends of the arms G with the pressure rolls R are drawn toward the platen by springs H, each spring being connected at one end as indicated at h to the adjacent arm, the lower end of the spring being connected at h to the carriage frame. 'By reference to Figure 2 it will be observed that the pivot screw F is formed with a threaded portion f which engages the cross piece or mar in stop rail N and with an eccentric portion f which fits an opening in the rear portion of the arm G. By turning the screw F, the pivotal axis about which the arm G turns may be chan ed. In this way should the bail as a who e become twisted or bent out of shape so as to cause the pres-- yielding devices at the front end of the bail arms above referred to.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the platen of arms pivotally mounted in rear of the platen, pressure rolls carried by the front ends of said arms, and bearing upon the platen, and adjustable means for shifting the ivotal axis about which the rear ends of t e arms move.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the platen of upper pressure rolls, a rod on which they are mounted, bail arms by which said rod is carried, and pivot members for the arms having eccentric portions on which the arms are ivoted, said pivot members being adjustable to change. the pivotal axis of each arm.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the platen of bail arms, pressure rolls bearing upon the platen, a rod on which the rolls are mounted, yielding devices carried by the front ends of the bail arms and bearing upon the roll carrying rod, and means for pivotally connecting the bail arms with the carriage frame comprising pivot members having eccentric portions about which the bail arms move.
