To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL VVEIss, acitizen of the German Republic, and a resident of Nuremberg, Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Couplings for Subcaliberor Practice Barrels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for fastening auxiliary barrels for vfire arms, .especially pistols, and consists essentially in a simple device for fastening said auxiliary barrel within the main barrel of the pistol and readily adjust the former within the latter.
My invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying" drawing in which Figure 1 is partly a side-view of, and partly an axial section through, a pistol constructed according to the invention; Figure 3 is a separate side-view of the auxiliary barrel, and Figure 2 comprises perspective illustrations of three details which, although ordinarily connected with each other, are here shown separated for the sake of distinctness.
In order to render fire arms of relatively great caliber more suitable for the purpose of practicing within houses or closed rooms, the diameter of the main barrel must be reduced in order to enable one to use ammunition of smaller caliber for the purpose of mere practicing. The known construction serving this purpose, therefore, relates essentially to the way of introducing and fastening an auxiliary barrel of smaller diameter within the main barrel of greater diameter. My invention is designed to obviate certain drawbacks, which are connected with the constructions heretofore in use or proosed, said drawbacks consisting mainly in the diiliculty of introducing and extracting the auxiliary barrel into and from the main barrel and of handling the pistol in general; in addition to this my invention obviates the disadvantages of the special fastening devices of known construction by providing a device of this kind which is solely fastened upon the muzzle of the barrel and which further permits a line adjustment of the auxiliary barrel within the main one.
Owing to the possibility of bringing the auxiliary barrel into any desired position with respect to the closure of the main barrel, thereby affording the possibility of regulating the sensitiveness of the small-caliber ammunition for practicing purposes the largest limits.
In addition to this, the fastening device according to my invention will permit ,to compensate for the, lateral deviation of ,the bullet by merely rotating the auxiliarybarrel within the main barrel for any desired angle. 6 a
The ancillarybarrel 3, as shown in Fig. 3 is provided at its front end with a screwthread .9, .upon which the :threaded nut 8 is mounted serving as a lock-nut. The sleeve 5 ismade in the form ofa bayonet lockand is mounted upon the muzzle of the barrel and thereupon rotated and latched behind the sight l. In order to firmly connect the sleeve 5 with the muzzle of the barrel, the former is provided with a female thread within its central bore, an adjusting screw 6, 7 being introduced within said thread and having also a central bore with a female thread therein. The adjusting screw, therefore, as can be seen from Fig. 1 shows the parts assembled, may be screwed into the sleeve 5, whereby the former will be pressed against the muzzle of the barrel and draws the sleeve 5 tight against the sight 4.
Thereupon the auxiliary barrel is introduced into the main barrel 2 of the pistol, until the thread 9 will abut against the female thread of the adjusting screw 6, 7 whereupon the inlet barrel may be screwed into the adjusting screw 6, 7 to such an extent that the rear end of the inlet barrel will have the desired correct position relatively to the closure of the fire arm 1. The lock nut 6, which is mounted upon the auxiliary barrel, is now screwed against the head 7 of the adjusting screw 6, so that the auxiliary barrel will be kept firmly within the main barrel 2 and screwed against any motion, in longitudinal or rotary sense, relatively to the latter. It is quite clear that only the lock-nut 8 need to be unscrewed if it is desired to change the position of the muzzle of the auxiliary barrel relatively to the bolt of the fire arm; the auxiliary barrel may thus be adjusted to any desired extent in the direction of its axis. It is further understood that in case of a lateral deviation of the bullet, the fire arm may be adjusted by rotating the auxiliary barrel for a small angle; the longitudinal displacement in this case is so small, that it may be entirely neglected.
My invention, in its essence, therefore, consists therein, that a sleeve 5 is employed as a fastening device, said sleeve being fastened in any desired manner upon the muzzle of the barrel. This sleeve will thus serve as supporting member, upon which the remaining parts of the device are mounted directly or indirectly.
There are various other modes of fastening the sleeve 5 upon the muzzle of the barrel, and the form of fastening shown in the drawing is only a preferred embodiment of my invention, because the sight & of the fire arm may be conveniently used for fastening the sleeve 5. It is obvious that any mode of fastening said sleeve, which is difierent from that shown and described herein, will not depart fromthe gist of my invention.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a main and a threaded auxiliary barrel with a sleeve mounted upon the main barrel, said sleeve being adapted to receive said auxiliary barrel in a threaded central bore, and an adjusting screw mounted on the threaded portion of said auxiliary barrel and adapted to abut against the muzzle of the main barrel, said adjusting screw having a central bore in longitudinal direction for receiving said auxiliary barrel.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a main and a threaded auxiliary barrel with a. sleeve mounted upon the main barrel, said sleeve being adapted to receive said inlet barrel in a threaded central bore and an adjusting screw interposed between the threaded central bore of said auxiliary barrel and adapted to abut against the muzzle of the main barrel, said adjusting screw "having a central bore in longitudinal direction for receiving said auxiliary barrel, a counter nut for fastening said auxiliary barrel, when inserted into said sleeve, said counter-nut serving for locking said auxiliary barrel.
