HEATING DEVICE FOR GASOLINE LANTERNS.
Application filed October 12,1922. Serial No. 593,939.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD T. GRADY, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, county of San Diego, and State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Im rovement in Heating Devices for Gasoline l anterns.
My invention relates to that class of gasoline lanterns in which it is necessary to apply heat to the generator tube which is generally done by an alcohol torch or some similar heating means.
It is well known that there is always a.
quantity of vapor present on the tube of the gasoline in the font of a gasoline lantern and m invention is designed to utilize this vapor y' leading it to a point adj acentthe generator tube whereit can be ignited and heat the same without the interposition of exterior means for furnishing the heat.
My means of accomplishing the foregoing objects may be more readily seen by having reference to the accompanying drawings which are hereunto annexed and are a part of the description, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a lantern embodying my improvement, the chimney and tube being omitted for the sake of clearness.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the entire description.
As shown in the drawings, the lamp comprises a font 1, which is provided with a pressure pump 2, located in the font itself. The feed or generator pipe 3 extends upwardly from a valve 4 which is mounted upon the top of the font 1. This feed pipe extends to a burner which is provided with a mixing chamber 5 in which the air which is conveyed through an air pipe 6 is mixed with the gasoline vapor before it is con veyed to the mantles 7 and 8 which it reaches through arms 9 and 10 on the burner.
It is well known to persons skilled in the art that in a lantern of this kind there is always a quantity of vapor in the space 17 between the top and the gasoline 18. I provide a fitting 13, which is preferably screwed into the top of the font 1. This fitting is provided with an orifice 16 which leads from the space 17, between the top of the gasoline 18 and the top of the font 1, to a needle valve 14. From the fitting 13, a pipe 15 extends upwardly, a stufiing box 19 being provided to make a tight joint, though any similar means may be employed for this purpose. The upper end 20 of the pipe 15 terminates adjacent the feed pipe 3 so that a flame caused by the gas issuing from the pipe 15, will impinge upon the feed pipe 3.
The operation of the device is as follows: By turning the hand wheel 21, the needle valve 14: is opened. This permits the vapor in the space 17 to pass out through the pipe 15 to its upper end 20 where it can be ignited. by any suitable or desired means. The flame thus produced impinging upon the generator tube heats the same very quickly and avoids the necessity of providing external means for furnishing this heat.
Having described my invention what I regard as new and desire to obtain by Letters Patent is:
' A gasoline'lantern having a gasoline font, a burner above the font, a feed pipe leading to a mixing chamber in the burneran air pipe leading to the mixing chamber, a fitting mounted in the top of the font, a needle valve in said fitting, a pipe mounted in said fitting, there being a port or passage leading from the'interior of the font to the interior of the pipe, said pipe terminating at a point adjacent the feed pipe, the feed pipe extending directly upwardly from the font and constituting a standard to support the burner.
