STEREOTYPE-PLATECASTING MECHANISM.

Be it known that I, ERNnsr J. SMITH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stereotypellate Casting Mechanisms, of which the followingis a specification.
The invention relates to stereotype plate casting machines, and more particularly to novel features, of and improvements in, the operating devices for the concave and convex casting members, the matrix operating devices, and to the means and method of handling the cast plate.
- Objects and advantages ofthe invention will be set forth in part hereinafter and in part will be obvious hercfrom, or may be learned by practice with the invention; the same being realized and attained by means of the instrumentalities and combinations pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention consists in the novel parts, constructions, arrangements combinations and improvements herein shown and described.
The accompanying drawings, referred to herein and constituting a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of theinvention, and together with the description, serve to explain the principles of the invention.

Referring preliminarily to the general features of the present embodiment of the invention, illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, a casting couple is provided which is in vertical position to form the casting chamber, the hot metal being poured in at the top in the usual manner. To discharge the plate and to change the matrix, both the core and drag that is both the convex and concave members, move backwardly from the casting position, pref- .erably by a combined rocking and receding motion in a verticalplane.
In such embodied form, the cast plate remains on the core, a convex casting member,
as it rocks back from the casting to the plate discharging position.
The plate is retained on the core during the movement away from the casting position by reason of the bottom stop or ring be ing on the core. As the core comes to plate discharging position, stops on the frame engage with the straight edges of the plate at either side thereof and raise it from the core into a position for ready and easy removal by an attendant.
Thematrix goes with the drag in the opening movement from casting position, and to clear the matrix from the drag preparatory to the stripping of the matrix from the plate, the'head stop, which protects the head of the matrix during the casting, moves away from the top end of the matrix. To effect this the upper end of the drag, which may be conveniently styled the head, is pivotally connected to the body of the drag, and is swung backwardly as the drag moves from the casting position.

Referring first to the means for traveling or moving both the dragand the core away from casting position, and in accordance with one feature of the invention, a single mechanism is 'provided for this purpose, and inconne ction therewith manually actuated means for operating the traveling mechanism. s a
As embodied, the drag 1 is provided at each side thereof and intermediately its ends with trunnions or' axles 5 and 6, on which are mounted, respectively, rollers 7 and 8. The rollers run, respectively, onlhorizontally disposed guideway or tracks 9 and. 10,
formed on the machine frame, the tracks being preferably shaped or upwardly curved at their-outer endsto form stops 1'1 and 12 to limitthe rearward travel of the rollers 7 and 8 along the trackways'.
The meansfor moving the drag to and from casting position, cooperating with the mechanism already described, comprises two yoked .lugs or brackets 15 and 16, fixed to and extending rearwardly from the back of the dra l Connecting links 17 and 18 connected, respectively, at 19 and 2Qto the, lugs 15 and 16. The links 17 and 18 are pivotally connected at their opposite ends21' and '22 in the yoke ends of a pair of arms 23 and 24, which arms are fixed on a shaft 25. The shaft 25 is journaled in bearings 26 and 27 in the two side frames of the machine. The mechanism as shown is manually operated, and for this purpose a crank 28 is fixed to the exterior end of the shaft 25,
By rotation, or rocking through a partial rotation, of the shaft 25, by means of crank 28 or other suitable means, arms 23 and 24 oscillate with the crank 25, and through the links 17 and 18 move the drag 1 to and from the casting position as shown in Fig. 2 to the matrix removing and reinserting position shown in Fig. 3. During this movement the rollers 7 and 8 run along the trackways 9 and 10, and thereby, in connection with the mechanism already described, the drag is given a combined translational and rotational movement from casting position to the matrix changing position, as shown.
Additional devices, cooperating with the foregoing mechanism, are provided for guiding and positioning the drag, which will be later described, as in the present embodiment and in accordance with one feature of the invention they cooperate with means provided for simultaneously moving the core and drag from a common actuating device or mechanism.
The means for moving core 2, which carries the cast plate from the casting position to plate removing position and back to the casting position, in the present embodiment, is connected to the mechanism for moving the drag already described, a common actuating means for imparting simultaneous movement to both the drag and the core from the handle 28 being thereby provided.
As embodied, the core 2 has fixed to or integral with the back thereof, by suitable means such as bolts 36, a transversely extending member or bar At the ends of the bar 35 are formed two airs of reversely extending arms, one pair of arms 36 and 37, respectively, terminating in shafts or pintles for rollers 88 and 39, which." rollers run on the trackways 9 and 10. formed on the side frames of the machine, and already described.
The other pair of arms 40 and 41 extending out from the ends of the bar 35 constitute a part of the connections in the embodied form of the common or simultane- 1:;
ously operating means for moving the drag and core together to and from the casting position. In the embodied form of said means, two arms 44 and 45 are pivotally connected to the outer ends of the arms 40 and 41, respectively. The arms 44 and 45 are fixed respectively to shafts 46 and 47, journaled at either side in the machine frame.

Fixed to shaft 55 is an arm 56, the other end of which is pivot-ally connected at 5'7 to an arm 58, fixed to and extending rearwardly from the side of the drag 1. On the opposite side of the drag 1, and likewise .fixed thereto and projecting rearwardly therefrom, is a similar arm 59, pivoted at its outer end to an arm fixed to a shaft 61, which shaft is journaled at 62 in the machine frame.
In the embodied form, the rearwardly projecting arms 58 and 59, fixed to the drag and which are pivotally connected respectively, to arms 56 and 60, which are journaled in hearings in the frame and the arms a0 and 41-1, fixed to the core and which are pivotally connected, respectively, to arms a l and 45, which are likewise journaled in bearings on the frame, in connection with the corresponding rollers running upon the trackways 9 and 10 and the relative position of the arms and of the rollers and trackways constitute a preferred embodied form of means for causing the core and the drag to travel from casting. position along definite desired and predetermined paths to desired and predetermined positions for the discharge of the plate from the core and for the change of the matrix on the drag, and for like movement back to casting position.
Means are provided, in accordance with one feature of the invention, for automatically removing or lifting the plate from the core when the core arrives at plate removing position, and as embodied this means operates by the movement or travel of the core approaching the plate discharging position. As herein embodied, the bottom end stop 68 corresponding to what is usually called the head gauge, for the curved edge of the plate, that is, the stop which constitutes the arcuate bottom of the casting chamber is fixed to the core, as shown in Figs. 3, l and 5. This further acts as a support for the cast plate 00 as the core rocks from casting position to plate delivery position.
In the embodied form of the plate lifting means, a fixed rod 69 is supported at 70 and Ti in the machine frame, and fixed thereon are upwardly projecting arms or plate lifters '72 and 73, positioned and alined so that as the core 2 rocks backwardly it will pass between these arms but the arms will engage the straight edges of the plate as, as shown in Fig. 3, and lift it clear from the core 2, ready to be removed by hand.
In Fig. 11 additional stops 74: are shown which engage the plate :0 at its opposite end and lift it clear from the core 2 along its entire length. The faces of the stops are shaped to contact fairly with the straight edges of the plate and cooperating with the bottom ring 68 on the core will hold it against any accidental sliding.
Means are provided by the invention for stripping the matrix sheet 3 from the cast plate in as the drag and core move away from the plate casting position, and for bringing the matrix sheet 3 to casting position as the core and drag return to casting position for the nextsucceeding cast, said means preferably operating automatically, and it is so shown herein. In cooperation with said means, mechanism is provided for automatically clearing the head stop, that I is the protecting ring for the upper curved edge of the matrix sheet 3 from the poured hot metal.
in the embodied form of automatically operating matrix stripping means, the mechanism in its details of construction and operation may be the same or similar to that shown and described in copending application Ser. No. 408,203 filed September a,
1920, by Albert A. Henri. Sufficient of said mechanism is shown herein to explain the operation thereof in the present embodied machine. Along each of the straight edges pressed shafts 81, which shafts are under spring impulsion to bring the matrix clamps to the matrix stripping position of Fig. 8. Fixed on the structure of the core 2 are a pair of steps 82 and 83, with which the clamping jaws 79 engage as the core and drag come to casting position, and by reason of such engagement the matrix clamps are rocked or swung against the impulsion of their springs to the positions of Fig. 7, thereby bringing the matrix to casting position. As the core and drag separate after casting the plate, to move to their respective discharge positions for the plate and matrix, respectively, the two pairs of jaws '79 and 80 in moving away from the stops 82 and 83, swing outwardly under the impulsion of their spring, and strip the matrix away from the plate, as shown in Fig. 8 for the early part of the operation.
In the embodied form of means for moving the arcuate head stop or matrix shield to and fro between casting position and matrix clearing position, the upper part of the drag, which for convenience may be called the head thereof. is p-ivotally connected. to the body of the drag, the matrix shieldbeing mounted upon the head at the juncture thereof with the drag body. iiutomatically operating means are provided for swinging the head to the drag relatively to the body portion thereof to impart the required movement to the matrix shield between the two positions mentioned. i As embodied, the drag head 86 is centrally and pivotally mounted at 87 upon the body of the drag 1, between two arms or brackets 88 fixed to and'extending out from body of the drag. Fixed to or integral with the head 86 is an arm 89 and a stop 90, the stop being adapted to engage with the body of the drag and limit the rocking action of the head 86. Fixed to the outer end of the arm 89 is a coil spring 91, which at its other end is fastened toa bracket 92 fixed to the bottom end of the drag body.
Within the head 86 is mounted the arcuate matrix shield 95, having an outwvardly extending undercut flange 96, adapted to slip over, or to abut upon, the top curved edge of the matrix 3 The countersunk portion 97 may likewise be provided along the upper inner arcuate edge of the drag body 1 as shown in Fig. 10.
Fixed to the head 86 is a device for automatically bringing the parts to the casting position. As embodied two stops 98 are provided at either side of the head 86, and they are adapted to engage with the stops 82 and 83, respectively, on the core, which alsooperate the matrix holding jaws.
The manner of operation of said mechanism is as follows;
If the parts are assumed to be in casting positiom't-hey will be in the position shown in- Figs. 1' and 9. As the drag moves for wardly to casting position from the matrix changing position, the pressure between the 15 stops 82 and 83 on the core, and the corresponding stops 98 on the drag will rock th head against the pull of spring 91 into alinement with the main body of the drag, and the ring 96 will be pressed over the top edge of the matrix wv as shown in Fig. 9. After the plate is cast, as the drag rocks backwardly from casting position, the stops 98, moving away from the stops 82 and 83 on the drag, will permit the spring 91 to rock the head 86 to the position shown in Fig. 5.
This will bring the ring 96 to the position shown inFigs. and 10, the ring then being clear from the edge of the matrix for the stripping operation.

in this embodiment (see Figs. 12, 13 and 14-}, there is iournaled transversely in the machine frame a shaft 105. Shaft 105 has fixed thereto. either side of the frame, a pair of angular arn'is 106- and 107, and journaled in the free ends of these arms, respectively, are rollers 108 and 109. The-arms and their rollers are so positioned on shaft 105 that the rollers at each side will be just beneath the corresponding straight edge of the plate: w, as shown for one side of the plate in the figures just referred to.
Further in said embodiment, means are provided operable by the operator for raisingtheplateby its straight edges and delivring it in the manner shown. For this purpose, an arm 110 is fixed to shaft 105, and pivoted. to the free end thereof is a rod 111. The other end of rod 111 is pivoted at 112 to a foot lever 113, which lever is pivoted at 11 1 on the machine'framel A restoring spring 116 may be employed for bringing the parts back to the position shown in l ig. 12.
The operation of this mechanism is substantially as follows When the core 2 is swung down from the dotted line position to the solid line position of Fig. 12 (which movement may be the sam as that described heretofore and effected by the same mechanism), roller 108 at each side engages the corresponding straight edge of the plate 00 and lifts it from core 2 into the position shown in Fig. 12,
the plate being held from sliding longitudinally by the ring or projection 68.
Rollers 108 engage the straight edges of plate very near or at the'central point in its length. 'Coijisequently, veryslight hand pressure will move the plate 00 from the position of Fig. 12 to that of Fig. 13, wherein the straight edges of the plate 00 rest upon both the rollers 108 and 109 at either side.
Pressure on pedal lever 113 will rock shaft 105 and bring the two sets of rollers 108 and 109 to the position shown in Fig. 14:. This brings the plate 00, with both its straight edges resting on the corresponding rollers 108 and 109, on' a level with table 117, and relatively small pressure will slide the plate on to the table. As stated, this may be a cooling table or it maybe part of the plate finishing machine, or it may be in position cluding in combination a traveling core, a

A stereotype plate casting machine including in combination a drag having a body for the matrix, and a head mounted on said matrix body and a matrix shield mounted on the head, and means operating automatically for moving the head to bring the shield over the end of the martin as the drag goes to casting position and to move it away therefrom as the drag leaves casting position.
42. A stereotype plate casting machine including in combination a core and a' drag, one at least of said members being movable to and from casting position and means for so moving said member comprising rollers mounted thereon running on a trackway on the frame, and, automatically operating an arm fixed to said member and pivotally con nected to an arm ournaled on the frame.

A stereotype plate casting machine including in combination a core and drag, one at least of said members being movable to and from casting position and means for so moving said member comprisingrollers mounted thereon running on a trackway on the frame,'and automatically operating an arm fixed to said member and pivotally connected to an arm journaled in fixed position on the frame.
44. A stereotype plate casting machine including in combination a core and a drag constituting a casting chamber, and means connected to the core and drag for moving them simultaneously both to and from east ing position, said means comprising track- Ways along Which the core and drag travel.
45. A stereotype plate casting machine including in combination a core and a drag constituting a casting chamber, and elements connected to both the core and drag and to each other for moving them both to and from casting position, said means comprising trackvvays and rollers mounted respectively on the core and drag and running along said trackvvays.
46. A stereotype plate casting machine including in combination a core and a drag both mounted for pivotal movement constituting a casting chamber, and means for moving them simultaneously both to and from casting position, said means comprising trackways androllers mounted respectively on the core and drag near their centers, respectively, and running along said trackways.
47. A stereotype plate casting machine including in combination a core and a drag constituting a casting chamber, and means for moving them both to and from casting position, said means comprising trackways along which the core and drag travel and interconnected pivoted arms controlling the movement of the core and drag.

A stereotype plate casting machine including in combination a core and a drag constituting a casting chamber, and means for moving them both to and from casting position, said means comprising traclrways and rollers mounted respectively on the core and drag and running along said trackvvays and interconnected pivoted arms controlling the movement of the core and drag.

A stereotype plate casting machine in cluding in combination a core and a drag constituting a casting chamber, and means for moving them both to and from casting position, said means comprising trackways and rollers mounted respectively on the core and drag near their centers, respectively, and running along said trackvvays and pivoted arms controlling the movement of the core and drag.
50.',Astereotype plate casting machine including in combination a core and a drag constituting a casting chamber, and means for moving them both to and from casting position, said means comprising trackways along which the core and drag travel and pivoted arms connected together and controlling the movement of the core and drag.

A stereotype plate casting machine'ineluding in combination a: core-and a drag constituting a casting chamber, and means for moving them both to and from casting posit-ion, said means comprising traokways and rollers mounted respectively on the core and drag and running along said trackways, and pivoted arms connected together and controlling the movement of the core and drag.

A stereotype plate casting machine including in combination a core and a drag constituting a casting chamber, and means for movlng them both to and from casting position, said means comprising trackvvays operation to plate delivering position, and a stationary member on the base of the machine constituting the bottom of the casting chamber.
54. A stereotype plate casting machine including in combination ,a rocking core, a rocking drag, means for moving them together to cast and apart after the casting operation to plate delivering position, and a stationary member on the base of the machine constituting the bottom of the casting chamber.
55. A stereotype plate casting machine including in combination atraveling core, a traveling drag, both having angular and translatory movement, means for moving them together to cast and apart after the casting operation to plate delivering position, and a stationary member on the base of the machine constituting the bottom of the casting chamber.
