Be it known that l, EDWARD d'. Dosensrniir, a citizen of the United Mates, residing at Blue island, in the county of Goolt and State et illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mining Ma chilies, oit vvhich the it'ollovving a speci` iication.
rl`his invention relates to improvements in hert cutting mining machines and his for its principal object to provide a neuT and improved device of this di-iscription, capable ot beingeasily and quickly handled during its cutting,l operation and during its move ment from place to place.
In carrying out my invention li provide a powerdriven lieri cutting; element permanently supported on a wheel. truck, pret erably ior movement on the mine traclr. The cutting;` elenfient is mounted on a pivotal turntable so that it may be supported te `swingangularly on both sides et the truck to eut a hert in advance oit the machine. Means are turther provided tor raisin s; and lowering` the cutting element and turntable to various elevations with respect to the truck so as to cut at various heights.
More particularly, the object et the present invention is to provide an improved arrangement oit turntable and elevatingu mechanism 'whereby the cutting mechanism may be lowered to require a-minimum overall height et the apparatus While beine; moved trom place to place in the mine, and 'lurther to provide maximum rin lity between the cutting,` element and the truck.

The standard cutting; element l0 is car! ried at all times `on the truck. While the machine is being,` transported from place to place the cutting` element is arranged lon- ,egitudinally ot the truck body, as shown in Figures l and'2, and with its motor in operative connection with the truck Wheels l2, l2 by means of a detachable driving connection ott any suitable term. is shown herein, this connection includes a driving pin l5 detachably engaged in a socket mem br Q6 to be driven by the mining` machine motor. The pin l5 is operatively connected to the supporting wheels l2, 'l2 ot the truck by any suitable mechanism, which may include a driving,` chain 27 and sprockets 32, 33, the latter sprocket being carried on the rear trucir Wheel. When cutting; a hert the cutting' element is arranged to swing angu larly about a fined pivot on the truck traine. Details ot the construction of the pivotal mounting` tor the cutting1 element are shown in Figures 1 and 3. The base plate 19 of the cutting element rests upon and is sen cured to a plate 2O forming the turntable upon which the cutting element swings. A stud 21- projects from the bottom surface of 4said plate and has pivotal bearing in a socket 22. VThis socketis secured to a longitudinally extending supporting plate 23.".Thefipivotal stud 21 yis preferably arranged substantially in alignment with the center of gravity of the cutting element so'that the latter will be substantially balanced on the supporting plate" 23 Vwhile it `is swung there/about. A pair of longitudinally movable toggle members 38,38 .are adapted to coact with the toggle members 35,'.3'35 and 35, 35a, to raise the bedpl'ate and ,cutting element as indicated Vini dotted lines in Figure 1.

Said ratchet device may vbe of yany approved pattern and may be i securedin place by a. clamp 42 attached to l the truck `frame 11.
The arrangement is such ,that the entire bed plate 23, turntable I2Odand. cutting mechanism may be swung upwardly and forwardly about the pivotal fr members 3.5, 35 andy 36, 36, by actuating the ratchet mechanism of the liftingy jack 39.
...Details 'of the ratchet mechanism in the 39 .are shown in `Figure fl, as herein shown comprising a standard form of jack operating mechanism including a toothed rack member 4:3, a stationary pawl 4A and an operating pawl movably mounted on a lever arm 45. In the present instance I provide means Yfor operating this lever arm comprising a rod 46 pivotally connected to said arm at 47 and extending .longitudinally to the rear end of the truck where it is pivotally connected to a lever arm 478 pivotally connected at 49 in an upright posi.- tion where it may be manually manipulated by an operator standing at the rear end of the truck. In order to afford suflicient movement of the parts the rack member 43 is made longer than is usual in ordinary jacks, herein extending through the foot 40 when the elevating mechanism is in its lowermost position as in Figure 1.
In order to provide the required rigidity of the elevating mechanism, I provide a plurality of guide plates 50, 50 secured in bearing engagement adjacent each of the toggle members 35, 35 and 35, 35a. These bearing plates preferably are arranged in pairs on both sides of each pivotal member, as shown, and extend a little short of half the .length of the respective members, their outer margins 51 being curved on a radius, as clearly shown in Figure 1. The arrangement is such that these guide plates provide a rigid lateral support lfor the toggle members 35, 35 and 35, 35a, in all relative positions of the elevating mechanism.
In conjunction with the elevating mechanism I provide tension means for cushioning the downward movement and assisting the initial upward movement of the elevating mechanism. This means, in the present inl vention, is suspended below the base plate 31 of the truck frame 11 and between the wheels 12, 12 thereof, so as to permit the elevating frame, and especially the relatively lonf)- pivotal bearing including the journal 22, to be lowered as far as possible and thereby afford a minimum. overhead clearance of the entire machine. As shown l1erein this tension means comprises a pair of springs 52, 52 housed in a casing 53 below the bed plate 31 of the truck frame 11, so as to be below the path of movement of the movable head 3() of the ratchet device 39. The rear ends of said springs are engaged with a stationary` stop 55 and the forward ends thereof engage a movable cross member 56. This cross member is connected with lli i ,transfithat the cross member 58 is engaged by 'the stop 59 on the movable head 3U only when the elevatin,an mechanism. is at or near nts lowermost position. ldhen said elevati p, plate is in its lowermost position, as shown in full lines in Figures l and 2, the springs 52, 52 are placed under compression and tend to counteract the weight oit the support and the cutting element thereon, thereby providing; a shoe-lr absorber to cushion the downward movement oli the support respective to the trame ll. The springs 52, 552 further assistin raising; the support and cutting,1 element from its lowermost position when the toggle members 38, 38 are nearest their horizontal position and the maximum amount of horizontal pressure is required :trom the jack in order to actuate the elevating;1 mechanism. l/Vhen the moving head 230 olf the jack is actuated. in raising the support, the cross arm 58 oit arms 5i', 5l' moves therewith until the limit ot movement of said arms is reached, as for instance, as apgainst a stop 60 on the base plate 31. Thereafter the cross arm. 5S becomes disengaged trom the moving head but remains in position to be rei-engaged thereby when the elevating; support again lowered.
