NNSINKABLE CAR FLOAT VAND CARGO BARGE.
Application filed November To all whom t may concern:
Be it known thatl, MAX Korrn, a subject of the King of Belgium, and a resident of the city, county, and State of N ew York7 have invented certain new and useful lm.- proveinents in Nonsinkable Car Float and Cargo Barges, as set forth in the Jfollowing specification.
My invention relates to non-sinkable car float and cargo barges designed with a series of watertight compartments ruiming parallel with the length of the barge.
Theobject of my invention is to rovide a series ol watertight compartments 1n such a manner that should a collision result in the leakage or destruction ot any one ot the same, the barge would nevertheless float.
A. furtherbbject of my invention is to enable either side of the barge to be elevated by displacing the opposite side by the introduction of water ballast, either by pumping saine into the compartmei'its or' through the manhole openings placed in cach compartment, into one or more of the series ot watertight compartiments, which is often great advent ige in enablino' a barge to level up to -the tract: levels on toe land side, for the car lloat type.
A 'further object of my invention is to provide a barge of this Vtype containing watertight compartments at cach end thereot' sol that by inserting water ballast in some conventional manner in either of said compartments the other and opposite end of the barge may be caused to be elevated to meet slight discrepancies in the track levels'on the shore end, for the car float type.
A further object ot' my invention is to provide a barge of such construction that it `vvill be ditlicult to capsize the saine with the resultant throwing of the cars into the rwa ter, by reason of the facility With which water ballast may be immediately placed in any conventional" manner to o'il'set any caps sizing condition, for the car float type.
A further object ot' my invention is to provide barges oi the type described, which will readily adapt themselves for purposes Oi repair withoutV the necessity of dry/dooie ing, by reason o'l' the tact that my construetion makes it possible to insert'w'ater ballast in any conventional manner into one or more ol the watertight'. compartments and thereby cause the opposite side or portion 1, 1923. Serial No. 672,064.
or endof the barge to be elevated above the water level and thereby make possible any necessary repairs.
A further object of my invention is to provide cargo barges of such construction that only a portion ol the cargo may be damaged in the event of collision, by reason eral views, liig. l is an elevation in perspeetive ot the side of inY invention, Fig. 2 is a plan view of same, ig. 3 is a perspective view oi" a section of the barge, Eig. Il is a cross-section elevation of a preferred embodiment of my cargo barge, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the deck of the same.
As will be observed, I provide a series of watertight compartments running1 parallel with the length of the barge, designated as A on opposite sides of the boat. l also provide watertight compartments at both ends of the barge D and C. It will be observed that I also employ in a preferential embodiment of my invention.bulkheadfpartitions across the barge designated X and Y, which automatically produce further watertight compartments l5. A
In order to provide access to my series of side, compartments and also the end compartments of the car flopt barge, l have provided a series4 of manholes in same, L designated in the drawin by G, through which water may be inserte manually or by pump, but it is tin/ne understood that the insertion ot' water into these compartments in any manner is within the scope of my invention. ln the cargo type l provide hatch covers E ot' Wood or other sui-table construction, and in a preferential embodiment l provide gangways l" depressed below the general normal level of the decir, for the purpose of facilitating the removal and replacement of the cargo hatch covers E. lt Will be 0bthe construction is of such nature that the the barge in normal operating position.
other compartments are quite ample to tlot t will also be observed that should any et the watertight compartments become punctured below the Water line, due to collision or otherwise, only the cargo in that particular compartment could be damaged by water.
It will now beobserved that any ot the aforesaidv objects of my invention relating lto the ballasting of the barge for purposes of docking, repairing or eliminating eapsizing may be readily accomplished by inserting Water into the compartments A, B, C or D, through manholes (ir or otherwise.
Having thus described my invention, what I claimand desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a non-sinkable cargo barge a combination of a plurality of Water tight compart- Lataoot ments toi-ming the sides yand ends of said barge traverse bulkhead partitions forming water tight subscoinpartuients and sub-cargo compartments, hatchway covers over suoli water tight compartments, gangways extend ing parallel to the length ot' said barge and depressed below the level of the said hatch- Ways as and for the purposes herein described.
ln a non-sinkable cargo barge, a coinbination of a plurality of watertight Compartineiits forming the sides and ends 0f said barge, traverse bulkhead partitions forming watertight sub-compartments andsub-oargo rzonipartiirients7 hatehway rovers over such watertight compartments, gangways extending parallel with the length ot said barge and depressed below7 the level of said oompartlnents equipped with means for admitting Water into the same, all as and for the purposes herein described. V
In Witness vwhereof l have hereunto signed my name this 17th day of October, 1923.
