Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HoYT YOUNG, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skates or Other Runners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in skates or other runners for use on ice or snow crust, the principal object being to provide a simple and inexpensive construction, yet one which will be very desirable.

Another object is to provide a device of the class described consisting of a plate and a longitudinal runner strip of bamboo secured to the plate.

A still further object is to make unique provision for steering the device.

With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing. Y

The present disclosure of my invention is directed'to the preferred form of construction where a skate is to be produced, and although I have restricted the description and illustration to a skate, it will be obvious that certain features may be used in connection with other forms of runners.

In the drawing, the numeral 1 designates an elongated sheet metal plate having the general contour of a shoe sole but of greater length, the heel portion of the plate being provided with integral ears 2 which are bent upwardly to engage the users heel. Also, at suitable points, spurs 3 are stamped upwardly to engage the sole and heel of the shoe and prevent slipping of the plate thereon. Upward stamping of these spurs, provides small openings 1 in the plate through which attaching fasteners may be driven if desired, or other-preferred provision may be made for securing the device to a shoe, and

The front end of the plate 1 is curved upwardly as indicated at 5 and preferably has its front edge bent upon itself as inclicated at 6 to prevent said edge from being injured and to generally stiffen the plate transversely. At the juncture of the upwardly curved end 5 with the horizontal portion of the plate 1, the latter is provided with a longitudinally elongated opening 7. A similar opening 8 is formed in an integral tongue 9 which inclines from the rear end of the plate 1. v I

Extending longitudinally along the lower side of the plate 1 is a runner strip 10 formed of bamboo, the ends of said strip being passed upwardly through the openings 7 and 8 and secured upon the upper sides of the tongue 9 and the front end 5 of said plate, the strip being secured to these parts in any desired manner, for instance by passing loops of wire 11 through openings 12 and around the strip ends. Also, to insure against any rearward sliding of the strip 10, I prefer to bend the rear terminal of the tongue 9 around the rear end of said strip as shown.

The opposite edges of the plate 1 are provided with forwardly diverging, longitudinally curved flanges 14 which are of less verticalheight than the strip 10. Consequently, this strip takes the weight of the wearer when going straight ahead, but by tilting the feet in one direction or the other, the flanges 14 of the two skates are brought against the supporting surface, and conse quently the skates are caused to turn in one direction or the other. i

By employing the construction shown and described or a substantial equivalent thereof, a device is provided which is extremely simple and inexpensive, yet will be very de details disclosed, they may be followed if desired, but within the scope of the invention as clalmed, numerous minor changes I claim:

1. A skate comprising a plate having an opening adjacent at least one end and having said end turned upwardly, a runner strip extending along thelower side of said plate and having one end turned upwardly llO through said opening and disposed on top of said upwardly turned plate end, and
