Description

H. D.v EDDY.
Bed-Bottoms. N0.15l,21\. l Patent-ed May 26,1874.
HORACE l). EDDY, OF GLENVILLE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JAMES M. GRAY, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPRJEMENT EN BED=EGTTOtvl Spccilication forming part of Letters Patent No. Ljd, dated May 26, 1874; application filled March 26, 1874.
To all whom yMuay concern.:
Be it known that I, HORACE D. EDDY, of Glenville, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed -B ottoins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, sueh as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to nialie and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forni part of this specilication.
'lhe nature of my invention relates to animproveincnt in bed-bottoms 5 and consist-s in the combination and arrangement ofthe seil'eral parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claim, whereby a simple, cheap, and durable spring bed-bottom is provided.
In the drawings, Figure l is a Vplan view, und Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical sectional view, ot' my invention.
e are two longitudinal baseboards, to which are secured the two cross supporting-bars Z), thus forming a substantial frame, F, to which are secured the springs. rlhe bars b are beveled to a sharp edge, and are inade ot thor- 'oughly-seasoned wood, or are capped with metal. c, d, and c are longitudinal flexible slats or bars so combined as to forni the bedsprings. The slats c and d are riveted together at their ends, and form the elliptical springs S. 'lhe slat d is made slightly longer than the slat c, so that when the ends of -the two slats are riveted together the curvature of slat d will be greater than the curvature of slat c, which gives it greater strength, and does not impair its tlexibility. Between the strips c and d, and near the ends, are inserted the bars f, which bars are in length equal to the width of the bed-bottom to be made. These bars are so inserted as to press the slats c and d apart and give the spring an elliptical form, and serve also as fulcrums or supports for the slat c, and prevent setting or breaking down of the slats. Having constructed the desired number of elliptical springs S, and having inserted the bars f, as described, the springs, be-
\ ing arranged at equal distances on said bars,
are secured by screws passing through into said bars. On the upper side, at the center, and secured, by screws or other suitable means, to the strips d, is the bar g, over which the supporting spring-strips c are passed, said strips e being secured to said bar by screws or other suitable means. The strips c are made sonicwhat longer than the strips c, so that when bent, as hereinafter described, their ends will be tlush with' the ends of elliptical springs S, and rest on the supporting-bar Z). These strips number one less than the springs S, and are arranged alternately between said springs. The strips c li avc their ends bent downward, and are held in place by the bars h, to which they are se cured by screws, and the bars 7i are so placed as to held the ends of said strips c at a point :dush with the ends of the springs S, and so that they will rest on the bar b. The bars It serve not only to hold'the springs c in proper position, but also as a fulcruin against which the said strips, in their reilcxive action, bear. rlhe two outer strips c are slotted at 1'., and provided with thumb-.scrcws, which secure them to the supporting-bars b.
It will be seen that when the flexible strips are secured together by the bars f, g, and le., a substantial sprin g-i'rame is formed, which is not liable to or give way laterally. It will be further seen that when said spring-frame is secured to the frame li a spring bed-bottoni ot' great strength, durability, and simplicity is formed, and one which presents the requisites of comfort in such class otl inventions.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rlhe combination oil the springs S with the' frame F by means of theiicxible strips c and bars g and h, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim. the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of March, 1874.
