To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. XVINE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and 5 State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car Hoppers and Looking Means Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in hopper cars and especially to the hopper, hopper door and the means for supporting and locking the latter.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a hopper construction in which the door for closing the discharge opening of the hopper is below the general floor line of the car and to provide a door of strong and simple construction which may be reinforced by standard flanged sections, preferably in the form of angle irons, extending beyond the outer end of the door to form ledges for cooperating with supporting hooks pivotally secured to the side of the car body.
A principal feature of the invention consists in reinforcing the door by a plurality of angle irons secured to the outer face thereof and extending toward and being secured to hinge members by which said door is movably connected to an adjacent center sill of the car, the said angle irons each having one flange disposedsubstantially parallel to the plane of the door and having its other flange disposed an angle thereto, hooks pivotally mounted upon the outer side of the car being provided for engaging the angle irons to support the door in closed' position. Another feature of the invention consists in providing the car with a hopper formed by placing the hinged door for the hopper at a point below the general floor line such that the hopper terminates abovethe bottoms of the car sills between which it is lo- 4 cated a distance sufficient to permit the hinged door to be provided on its under side with flanged reinforcing members adapted to extend under and project outwardly bey n he n g g de sill of the car s as to afford seats or ledges for cooperating with pivotally mounted hooks carried upon the outer side of the car body.
Other features of the invention, residing in certain novel arrangements and combina tions of parts, will hereinafter appear and be pointed out in the claims.
Referring now to the drawings showing a preferred embodiment of the invention,

It is to be understood at the outset that although I have shown the door and the locking device as applied to a freight car, the invention might equally be applied to other structures calling for a drop bottom door. 7 i i In the drawings, a type of car is shown having uprightstakes 1 and diagonal braces 3 of well known form. The ordinary floor of the car is shown at'41, while 5 indicates one of the center sills and'6 is the side sill adjacent thereto. The hoppers which are arranged on opposite sides of the center sills inwardly of the corresponding side sills are formed by hopper planks 7 extending downwardly below the car floor and terminating above thelower edges of the center and side sills 5 and6, respectively.
The center sill 5 is preferably formed as a flanged member of channel shape, and the adjacent side sill 6 is likewise preferably constructed as a channel iron. The flanges of these sills extend toward each other. Secured to the web of the center sill 5 between the flanges at the top and bottom of said sill are hinged brackets 9 for cooperating with hinged members 10 carried by the door 11.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.
