HOWARD M. BARBER, or s'roNiNe'ro n, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR To o. B. co'rrnnnrx & soNs COMPANY, or NEW 31031;, N. Y., A CORPORATION or DELAWA E.
SHEET-HANDLING MECHANISM.
Application filed May 26,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD M. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Stonington, in the county of New Lon don and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet- I-Iandling Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
In fabric printing machines when the sheet is cut from the fabric that has been baled, the out often comes so close to a crease or fold in the fabric that the front end of the sheet which overhangs the cylinder gripper recess will turn inwardly into the recess, frequently taking such a position that the delivery carrier grippers will fail to grasp the front end of the sheet but will close outside of the same, thereby permitting the sheet to drop ofl from the cylinder and be wasted instead of being carried out to the proper delivery point.
The object of my invention is to provide in sheet handling mechanism, means for pre venting this inward turning of the advance end of the sheet on its cylinder, thereby ensuring the taking ofi of the sheet from the cylinder by the delivery carrier grippers.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 represents a detail plan of an impression cylinder with my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 represents a detail section taken in the plane of the line IIII of Fig. 1, the delivery carrier and its grippers being represented in dotted lines.
Fig. 3 represents a detail section taken in the plane of the line IIIIII of Fig. 2, showin one means for laterally adjusting the position of one of the supporting fingers for the front end of the sheet.
The impression cylinder is denoted by 1, the set of grippers by 2 and the gripper recess by 3. The tympan is denoted by at, the tympan bar by 5 and the tympan nippers by 6.
The delivery carrier is denoted by 7 and its grippers by 8, which grippers are arranged to coact with the grippers 2 of the impression cylinder for taking the sheets therefrom in the'usual manner.
The means which I have shown for supporting the overhanging front end of the 1923. Serial No. 641,772.
turned outer end 13 which forms an eXtension of the surface of the cylinder over the gripper recess a suflicient distance to support the leading end of the sheet in proper position to be grasped by the grippers 8 of the delivery carrier 7 for the proper transfer of the sheetfrom the impression cylinder to the delivery carrier, these fingers serving to prevent the free end of the sheet from turning inwardly into the cylinder where it may be missed by the grippers. of the delivery carrier.
It is evident that various changes maybe resorted to in the construction, form and ar-' rangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish tobe limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, but
What I claim is 1. Sheet handling mechanism including a cylinder, its gripper recess and grippers arranged to close on the surface of the cylinder, and a skeleton support for the overhanging front end ofthe sheet, to ensure the proper taking off of the sheet from the cylinder.
2. Sheet handling mechanism including a cylinder, its gripper recess and grippers arrality of fingers carried by the the bar with p their ends forming an extension of the surface of the cylinder for supporting the overhanging front end of the sheet, to ensure the proper taking off of the sheet from the cylinder.
4. Sheet handling mechanism including a cylinder having a gripper recess, grippers arranged to close on the surface of the cylinder and a tympan flipper bar, and a plurality of fingers carried by and adjustable along the bar With their ends forming an extension of the surface of the cylinder for supporting the overhanging front end of the sheet, to ensure the proper taking 0% of the sheet from the cylinder.
5. Sheet handling mechanism including a cylinder having a gripper recess, grippers arranged to close on the surface of the cylinder and a tympan nipper bar, and a plurality of fingers carried by and independently adjustable along the bar With their ends forming an extension of the surface of the cylinder for supporting the overhanging front end of the sheet from the cylinder.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name this 24th day of May 1923;
HUWARD BARBER.
