UNITED STATES GEBTRDE A. MAGVEY, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CIGARETTE Box.
Application led February 19, 1923. Serial No. 619,890.
To` all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GERTRUDE A. MACVEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain 'improvements in cigarette boxes and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character with novel and improved means whereby a supply of matches may be carried thereby. I
. Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein one end portion of a wall of the box proper is provided with a return Hap to receive a supply of matches together with means for maintaining the flap in applied position and the matches against displacement.
rFhe invention consists `in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved cigarette box whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be deiinitely claimed.
ln order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Flgure l is a view in perspective of a box constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the device as illustrated in Figure 1 with the large end flap lof the tray in a posi- -`tion to conceal the matches;
Figure 3 is a view in plan of the blank .from which the tray is formed;
Figure 4 is a view in plan of the blank 5 from which the box is formed;
Figure 7 is a view of the blank from which the box proper is formed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a box constructed in a conventional manner from the blank B as illustrated in Figure 4 and with which is associated the sliding tray 2-in which the ciga- :rettes are placed in the ordinary way. TheV tray 2 is preferably formed from a blank C as illustrated in Figure 3.
, A face wall 3 of the box 1 isprovided at one end with a relatively short flap 4 which is `returned to overlie the outer face ofsaid wall 3, said flap being maintained in such position by the wire staple 5 or the like.
inserted between the flap 4 and the adj acent face wall 3 is a block or pack 6 of matches, the staple 5 or the like also serving to maintain said block or pack 6 in applied position. The outer face of the Hap 4 is provided with an igniting surface- 7 of suitable material. One end portion of the tray 2 is provided with a closing flap 8 of a conventional type while the opposite end portionof said tra 2 is provided with an elongated closing api 9whicli, when the tray 2 is housed within the box l is adapted to have its outer or free end portion inserted between the` Hap 4 and the block or pack 6 of matches, as particularly illustrated in Figure 2, whereb the matches under normal conditions are e ectively protected.
In the form of invention illustrated in Figures 5, 6 and 7 the box 10 is constructed in a, conventional manner from the blank A illustrated in Figure' 7. Associated with the box 10 is the tray 11 of the type now gen-- erally in use.
A face wall of the box 1() is provided at one end with a flap 12 which is returned to overlie the outer face of said wall and secured by a staple 14 or the like in the same manner as hereinbefore set forth with respect to '100 the first embodiment of my invention. Associated with the {'la 12 is a. block or pack 15 of matches applic in the same manner as hereinbefore set forth with respect to the block or pack 6. The wally of the box 10 provided with the flap 12 is provided at the opposite end thereof with an elongated flap 16 which is adapted to have its outer or free end portion inserted between the flap 12 and the block or pack 15 whereby the matches are eiectively protected.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a cigarette box i ythe several parts erein shown in carryingv which it may be assembled and constructed in accordance with my: invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason 'of the convenience and facility with n operated, andit will 'also be obvious that my lnvention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing'` from the principles and spirit thereof and for 'this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to theprecise arran ement 'and formation of out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim :7 As a new article of manufacture, a ciga- 'rette box having a face wall extended at one outer-face of saidwal'lythe uterlface of the returned flap being 1:4 vided with a striking surface,- a match'pack inserted between the returned flap and the adjacent wall of the box, means disposed -thr`ough the flap, the wall and the inserted iportion of the match pack for holding the a' in overlying relation andthe match pac inst displacement, said face wall'of the x at the end thereof opposite to the flap being provided with an integral elongated flap returned to overlie the outer face of said wall and of a,
length to engage-between the first named flap and the match pack to protect the pack.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
GERTRUDE A. MAOVEY.
