Patented Sept. 23, 1924.
UNITED STATES DELONIA B. WALTERS, F BALLENGEE, WEST VIRGINIA.
SPORT GLOVE.
Application filed November 23, 1922.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that DELONIA B. War/rants,
a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Ballengee, in the county of Summers and State of West Vir inia, has invented new and useful Improvements in Sport Gloves, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a sport or ball players glove and more particularly to provide in connection with a ball players glove a guard for the fingers whereby the straining thereof by backward bending or the injury thereof by terminal impact of the ball may be prevented without detracting from the freedom of movement of the hand of the latter in those directions necessary to a proper handling of the ball; and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view of a glove of the type ordinarily used by basemen and fielders wherein there is shown in dotted lines a reinforcing or guard member embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a detail view of the reinforcing or guard member detached from the glove.
Figure 3 is a sectional view of the glove taken longitudinally in the plane of one of the fingers.
The device consists essentially of a flat plate with which are connected fiat j ointed finger elements 11, each finger element having a stop or rule joint connection as shown at 12 with the back-hand plate and consisting of a plurality of sections corresponding with the joints of the fingers, with similar joints 13 between the sections to the end that the sections of each finger element and each finger element with relation to the back-hand plate may be folded inwardly or forwardly in the direction of the closing or clasping of the hand of the wearer with Serial No. 602,784.
entire freedom but can not be moved in the opposite direction beyond a common plane or straight line. This back-hand plate and finger elements are disposed at the back of the hand and are embedded between inner and outer padding 14C and 15 enclosed within the cover 16 of the glove which in other respects may correspond with the conventional types now in common use, so that the cover of the glove is protected from wear by the reinforcing device which in turn is protected from contact with the ball or other object grasped by the hand of the wearer, and preferably the terminals of the finger elements project slightly beyond the ends of the fingers of the wearer so that in the event of the ball striking the ends of the fingers the impact thereof is received by the reinforcing member rather than by the end of the wearers finger and the risk of broken or distorted fingers is minimized while the strains and sprains incident to violent backward bending of the fingers at the joints is eliminated.
Having described the invention, what it claimed as new and useful is A glove for the purpose indicated having inner and outer padding disposed at the back of the hand, and a reinforcing member consisting of a flat plate and flat jointed finger elements, said plate and finger elements being embedded between said inner and outer padding, and the finger elements having rule joint connections with the plate and consisting each of a plurality of sections similarly jointed together to provide for inward folding movement of said finger elements but to limit outward movement of the same to the plane of the plate, the free extremities of the finger elements projecting slightly beyond the ends of the fingers of the wearer to protect the fingers from the impact of an object.
In testimony whereof he affixes his signature.
