I W. T. BRADSHAW ET AL TOBACCO SMOKING PIPE, CIGARETTE, AND CIGAR HOLDER Filed March 21. 1921 v gwpanto'o William 'liBradsham Guszave Edvard Schmidt.
Patented Sept. 23, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM T. BRADSHAW AND GUSTAVE EDWARD SCHMIDT, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
TOBACCO-SMOKING PIPE, CIGARETTE AND CIGAR HOLDER.
Application filed March 21, 1921. Serial No. 453,945.
'1 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, 'WILLIAM T. BRAD- srraw and Gusrm'n EDWARD SCHMIDT, citizens of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Snacking Pipes, Cigarette and Cigar Holders, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention is an improved tobacco smoking pipe, cigarette and cigar holder, which prevents saliva from entering the i'nouth-piece and stem and thereby prevents the pipe from becoming unsanitary.
Referring to the annexed drawing in which our invention is illustrated and which forms a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of my pipe.
Figure 2 is aplan view of the mouth-piece.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the mouth-piece taken on the line, 3-3 of Figure 2.
In the drawing 1 indicates the bowl of our pipe, 2 the stem, 3 the mouth-piece and 1 a mouth-piece coupling which couples the mouth-piece to the end of the stem. The mouth-piece coupling has a threaded stud 5 which screws into the end of the stem 2 and a socket 6 in its outer end which receives a stud 7 on the inner end of the mouth-piece 3. The outer end of the mouth-piece is formed with a valve seat 8 for a valve 9, the stem 10 of which valve extends through the conduit 11 of the mouth-piece and beyond the same into the conduit of the coupling 4. The inner end 12 of the mouthpiece conduit 11 is enlarged to receive a spring 13 which surrounds the valve stem and bears at its forward end against the end wall of said enlarged inner end 12 of said conduit and extends for a substantial dis tance beyond the inner end of the mouthpiece. A nut 14 screws on the inner end of the valve stem 10 against the inner end of the spring 13, said nut 14 being readily accessible when the coupling is disconnected from the mouth-piece. The spring 13 normally holds the valve 9 on its seat 8 and closes the mouth-piece.
The valve 9 opens when the smoker draws on the pipe and allows smoke to pass through the mouth-piece into the mouth of the smoker, but when the smoker stops drawing on the pipe, the valve 9 closes under the influence of its spring 13 and prevents saliva from the smokers mouth from entering the mouth-piece and stem, thus keeping the pipe sanitary.
Having described our invention, we claim:
In a tobacco smoking pipe, cigarette or cigar holder, a mouth-piece provided with a longitudinal conduit, said conduit being enlarged near its inner end forming a shoulder, a valve seat at the outer end of the 1nouth-piece, a valve adapted to normally rest in said valve seat, a valve stem connected to the valve and extending longitudinally of said conduit, a nut on the inner end of said valve stem, said valve stem and nut projecting from said mouth-piece, a spring interposed between said nut and said shoulder whereby the valve is normally held in closed position, the pipe stem being provided with a socket at its outer end to provide a housing for the projecting portion of said valve stem and nut, and means whereby the mouth-piece may be detachably con-- nected to a pipe stem.
In testimony/ whereof we affix our signatures.
WILLIAM T. BRADSHAW. GUSTAVE EDWARD SCHMIDT.
