PUMP ROD AND VALVE GRAB.
Application filed August 7, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I GEORGE SMITH, citizen of the United States, residing at Mullen, in the county of'Hooker and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump Rod and Valve Grabs, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to an improved pump rod and valve grab and seeks, among other objects, to provide a simple and efficient device of this character for recovering pump rods or valves.
Other and incidental objects will appear hereinafter.

Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
In carrying the invention into effect, I. employ a cylindrical sleeve or shell 10 which is preferably of steel and threaded into the sleeve at its upper end is a nipple 11. Threaded over the upper end of said nipple is a reducer 12 and threaded into the reducer is a rod 13 for lowering the device in a well. Mounted in the sleeve at its lower end are pairs of oppositely disposed spring jaws 14 and 15, respectively. These jaws are each riveted or otherwise secured at their lower ends to the sleeve and, as best brought out in Figure 2, the jaws of each pair are curved inwardly toward their upper ends to approach each other. Formed on the jaws at their upper ends are teeth 15. The air of jaws 15 is disposed above the pair of jaws 14, being arranged at their lower ends substantially at the plane of the upper ends of the latter pair of jaws. In conjunction with the sleeve 10, I also employ an oppositely disposed pair of dependin spring jaws 16. At their upper ends these jaws are each detachably secured against the inner side of the sleeve by a pair of spaced bolts or other suitablefastening devices 17, and, as will be observed, the jaws are gradually curved to approach each other toward their lower ends Serial No. 656,266.
and are provided at their lower extremities with inturned confronting hooks 18.
When the device is to be used for grab bing a pump rod, the pair of jaws 16 is removed so that the sleeve 10 may be lowered in a well down over a pump rod standing in the well. As the sleeve is thus shifted downwardly over the pump rod, the jaws 14c and 15 will be flexed to receive the pump rod therebetween so that when the sleeve is lifted, said jaws will engage the rod to effect lifting thereof and removal of the rod from the well. gAs will be observed, the pair of jaws 14 is disposed of jaws while, due to the upward and inward curvature of the jaws, the weight of the rod will tend to flex the jaws inwardly toward each other to thus bind against the rod. Slipping of the grab withpossible loss of the rod will thus be prevented.
Should the pump rod be smooth, the sleeve j 10 may, after having been lowered over the pump rod, be rotated for causing the teeth 15 of the pairs of jaws 1 1 and 15 to saw or bite into the. rod and thus obtain a secure hold thereon, which hold will become more secure as the sleeve is lifted and the rod is suspended by the jaws. In the event a pump valve is to be removed from the well, the pair of jaws 16 are attached to the sleeve so that the sleeve may be lowered into the well to engage the hooks 18 of such pair of jaws with the valve for removing the valve.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a pump rod and valve grab, the combination of a sleeve, a pair of coacting diametrically disposed flat spring jaws rigidly fixed at their lower ends against the inner face of the sleeve at its lower end to extend upwardly within the sleeve and curved toward each other at their free ends, a second pair of coacting diametrically disposed flat spring jaws rigidly fixed at their lower ends against the inner face of the sleeve substantially at the plane of the upper ends of the former pair of jaws to extend upwardly within the sleeve, the lat and fastening devices extending through the ter pair of jaws being disposed in a plane sleeve and said latter pair of jaws detachat a right angle to the plane of the former ably connecting such jaws with the sleeve. 10 pair of jaws and being curved toward each In testimony whereof I aflix my signaother at their free ends a pairot coaottu 'e ing diametrically disposed-flanspring jaws depending from the lower end of the sleeve, GEORGE SMITH.
