Description

INVENTR.
FeEoEE/GK S7-vnf' COMPOSITION PULLEY Filed Nov.
Sept. 9 1924.
Patented Sept. 9, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. Y,
FREDERICK A'. STOLTE, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
coMPosrrIo-N PULLEY.
Application filed November 5, 1921. Serial No. 513,122.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Fnnnnnrcx A. SToL'rn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Composition Pulleys, of which the following is a specification. y
rihis invention relates to composition pulleys, and the prime feature. of the invention is the combining with a metal boxing or core of a fibrous body composition, said fibrous composition being composed of comminuted particles' which are vtreated with an adhensive substance for holding them in compact formatio-n.
And a further feature of the invention is the provision of a fabric facing for the belt receiving surface of the pulley.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter vmore fully set forth and pointed out in the accompanying specification.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is an end elevation of the pulley with parts broken away, and
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the pulley partly in section.
Referring to the. drawings, l indicates the boxing or core which is preferably vconstructed of metal and has at each end thereof a Harige 2, one of which is preferably integral with the boxing while the other flange is slipped over the end of the boxing, the removable flange. being secured or fixed in position by extending tie rods 3 transL versely through said flanges. v
Built around the boxing l and encasing the tie rods 3 is a body structure 4' which is composed of comminuted fibrous material preferably sawdust, the' particles of sawdust being treated with an adhesive 'substance and then subjected to pressure for forming the fibrous particles into a concrete unitary structure, the strength and wearing qualities of the body portion being substantially equal to that of a metal pulley, while the cost of production and weight of the pulley is very materially decreased.
By constructing the bearing surface for a belt of a fibrous substance, the belt will have a greater tendency to adhere to the surface than when a metal pulley is used, consequently a more uniform drive is obtained and the wear and tear on the belt reduced to a minimum.
If preferred, a covering 5 of fabric may be introduced around the body structure l and secured thereto in any suitable manner, preferably by adhesion, and in some instances the fabric may be embeddedin the face of the' body structure, thisforml of covering serving to practically entirely eliminate slippage of the belt and presenting a mo-re pliable wearing surface tothe face of the belt.
It will be understood, o-f course, that various forms of pulleysmay be constructed and the same results accomplished, but in the present instance the body structure 4- is shownas of greater diameter than the diameter yof the flanges 2, flanges 2 are shown as embedded in the ends of the body structure and having their outer faces flush with the end faces of the body. The present form of pulley likewise shows the covering 5 of fabric. of less length than the length of the pulley so that by embedding the fabric in the face of `the body structure, the material 'of `which the body .structure is composed will abutV against and protect the edges of the covering.
Having thus fully described my said invention,'what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf:
A pulley comprising a metal'core having an integral radially extend-.ing flange at one end, a separate flange mounted on its other end, ay molded fibrous body on said core extending over said flanges and having its ends flush with the ends of,r the core, tie rods extending axially through said fibrous body and connecting said flanges for interand the locking the fibrous body and flanges together and for securing the movable flange in position around the end of the core, and a fabric covering secured to the peripheral face of Vthe body the edges ofthe said fabric covering being substantially flush,"
with the peripheral face of the pulley, sub-- stantia-lly as set forth. f
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana,
this 2nd day of November, A. D. nineteenl hundred and twenty-one.
