SHIELD.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEs'rER G. GULDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Shield, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to motor vehicle headlights, and it is the primary object of the invention to provide novel means to be positioned within the lamp and in such re lation with the bulb usually employed in connection therewith to defuse the light rays projected therefrom and reduce the glare of the headlights to the minimum, due consideration being given to the proper illumination of the road.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be readily and easily positioned in a headlight, eliminating the necessity of making changes in the usual headlight construction to apply the same.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Figure 1 is a front elevational view disclosing a device constructed in accordance with the present invention as positioned within a headlight.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character 5 designates the casing of the headlight which is of the usual construction and in which is positioned the usual curved reflector 6. The lamp socket 7 extends through the reflector 6 in the usual manner and is held in position by means of the screw 8, the lamp socket 7 supporting the usual electric bulb indicated at 9.
The lamp attachment includes an upper section and a lower section, each section comprising a length of sheet metal 10 formed with cut out portions disposed adjacent to the ends thereof, which cut out portions are designed to fit over the forward edge of the reflector 6 to support the device on the reflector.
Associated with each member v1O is alength of sheet metal indicated at 11 which is curved as clearly shown by Figure 1 of the drawing, and has its end riveted to the member 10 associated therewith as at 12.
The sections are relatively wide and have their rear edges curved at 13 to conform to the curvature of the reflector 6 so that the device will substantially house the bulb 9 to confine the light rays pro ected there from to a restricted area. The sections of the device are held in spaced relation with each other by means of the plates 14, each of which being provided with slots extending from one edge thereof and terminating at points intermediate the side edges of the plates as shown by Figure 4 of the draw- 111g.
The members 11 are also formed with slots extending from one of the edges thereof and terminating at points intermediate the side edges so that when the cut out portion of the members 11 and 14 are brought together, the members 1st and 11 will be interlocked to secure them against movement.
At the ends of the members let are tongues 15 that extend through openings in the members 10 to secure the ends of the members 14- to the members 10 in a manner to restrict movement thereof.
In the form of the invention as shown by Figure 5, the sections of the device are in dicated at 16, which are also curved to properly fit within the curved reflector of a headlight, the sections being formed with openings to receive the tongues 17 of the spacing plates 18 for securing the sections in spaced relation with each other.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that due to this construction, the electric bulb supported within the headlight will be housed by the sections and spacing plates of the device, to the end that the light rays projected from the bulb will be projected on a line below the line of vision of operators of approaching machines, acting to reflect the light rays forwardly between the sections and spacing plates to defuse the It might be further stated that when the device'is positioned, the usual lens which is indicated at 19 is positioned thereover, and the securing ring indicated at 20 is secured to the lamp casing in a manner to prevent displacement of the device.
In the form of the invention as shown by Figures 6, 7 and 8 of the drawings, the guard includes a supporting member 21 formed with right angled end portions 22 that area-pertured to receive suitable means whereby the guard may be secured within a headlight. Ext-ending laterally from the supporting member 21 are relatively wide dividing members 23 adapted to divide the body portion of the headlight into upper and lower sections, the outer ends of the members 23 extending downwardly as at 24 where they rest against the inner surface of the headlight in which the device is positioned.
Extending downwardly from the members 23 are arms 25 which are arranged adjacent to the free ends of the members 23, which arms provide supporting members for the outer ends of the screens 26 that have their inner ends secured to the supporting member 21 in any suitable and well known manner. Thus it will be seen that the light rays projected from the usual deflector of a headlight will be defused as it passes through the screening members 26, reducing the glare to the minimum.
Supported by the upper portion of the member 21 is a guard which embodies laterally depending members 27, which are spaced from the supporting member 21 to allow light rays to be projected between the members 27 and supporting member 21, the rear portions thereof being bent laterally providing wings 28 formed with openings allowing small particles of light to be projected therethrough. A. screen 29 of relatively fine mesh is supported by the wing members 28 and is held at a point adjacent to the upper extremity of the guard to defuse the light rays at this point.
The reference character 30 designates a hood which is disposed at a point directly above the dividing members 23, which hook is formed with openings 31 to allow the light rays from the bulb positioned within the hood to be projected laterally therethrough. A screen 32 extends across the forward end of the hood to defuse the light rays. At the rear of the supporting member 21 are curved spacing plates 33 and 34,
the plate 33 being provided with a cut out portion in its upper extremity, while the plate 34 is formed with an opening in its lower extremity, which openings cooperate to receive an electric light bulb as clearly shown by Figure 6 of the drawings.
It might befurther stated that it is contemplated to secure sheets of colored transparent material such as indicated at- 35 to the wings 28 and members 27 to cause the light rays projected to be colored indicating direction or danger.
I claim: 1
1. In a device of the character described, a supporting member, laterally disposed dividing members supported by the supporting member, a guard mounted on the upper portion of the supporting member and including depending membersdisposed in spaced relation with the supporting member, a hood mounted on the supporting member, said supporting member having a curved cut out portion to accommodate an electric bulb, and shielding members formed with openings to defuse the light rays proj ected therethrough.
2. In a device of the character described, a supporting member, laterally disposed dividing members connected with the supporting members at points intermediate the ends of the supporting members, a guard disposed above the dividing members and including members spaced from the supporting member, ahood disposed at the base of the guarding member and having openings to allow light rays to be projected upwardly between the guarding member and supporting member, and defusing means suported by the supporting member.
3. In a device of the character described, a vertically disposed supporting member, dividing members connected with the supporting member, and extending laterally therefrom, a guarding member arranged above the guiding members, said guarding member including laterally extending wings formed with openings, a lamp hood directly under the guarding member and formed with openings to allow light rays to be projected upwardly, and screening members for defusing light rays.

Inadevice of the character described, a vertical supporting member, dividing members disposed in horizontal planes and having connection with the supporting member, a hook! mountedon the supporting member, said supporting member having a cut out portion adjacent to the hood-to re ceive an electric bulb, said hood having openings to allow light rays to be projected therethrough, and light defusing means arranged above the hood.
5; In combination with a headlight having a curved reflector positioned therein, a light defusing means including vertical supports, dividing members extending laterally from the support, a hood supported above the dividing member, defusing means above the hood and arranged in spaced relation with the reflector, and curved members supported at the rear of 10 the supporting member and adapted to engage the curved reflector for holding the device in spaced relation with the reflector.
