Be it known that l, Cirami-ss T'. liiscizioir, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in rliclet Holders and Cutters, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to a device for hold-- ing detachable sales checks such as are used in restaurants and various other places where the waiter is required to tear ottl the check from its stub anc give the customer the severed section on which the amount orp the purchase is indicated.
The invention provides a shearing` device for cutting notches in the edge of the check to indicate the amount oi" the purchase. An essential feature of the invention consists in the construct-ion of the shearing device and the arrangement of the parts thereof so as to form a guard for the pointed end of the shearing tongue in order that no portion will be exposed upon which anyone is liable to be injured.
It is also an object to provide a holder for checks which will be simple in construction and which may be stamped out oi? a single piece of sheet metal and which can be conveniently fastened to the waist band or belt of the user in a manner to be readily reached when necessary to detach the check.

The holder A comprises a base plate l2. oi such length as 'to support the pad oi checks. rllhe longitudinal side edges oie the plate l2 are bent to form upstanding flanges 13 extending the length of the base plate to provide means for stiipening the base plate and also to facilitate the proper positioning of the tickets on the base plate.
rll'he upper end ot the holder A is pro vided with means for retaining the pad upon the holder, consisting oi bar or strip leiliorined integral with the base and entend ing between the flanges 139 parallel to a spaced above the base plate l2. rllhe lower end oi' the base plate provided with a shearing device tor notching the edges ot the checks to indicate the amount o1t` the purchase, said means consisting of a tongue 16 stamped 'trom the body portion of the base plate 12 and extending therefrom as an integral part ot the base plate. The tongue 16 is curved slightly downward and has an upwardly extending portion 17 which extends through a slot 18 21S SU 1 i Ci i G the y in the base plate :trom which the tongue cut, as shown in Fig. G, and terminating a pointed end 19 having cutting which cooperate with the cutting edges l21 tormed in the angularly disposed portion 22 oit the base plate 12. rllhe portion 13" et the tongue is angularilv positioned relative to the inclined member 22 as best shown in Figs. 2 and 6 so that the pointed end 19 will i'irst pierce the check when the tongue is pressed downwardly, whereby a shearing action is given to the tongue the cooperating edges are successively brought together.

'Elli cutting means oie the holder, in the form shown, is adapted to cut a il-shaped notch on the edge oit the check to indicate the amount ot the purchase when the check is issued. The tree ends of the checks 10 are held in a slightly raised position by the cut ting tongue 1o when the same is in normal position. rllhe cutting means are operable to first pierce the body ot the check and then shear toweds the edge, thus providing a simple and very effective cutting means in the holder itself without the necessity of providing a cutter which requires sharpening from time to time, the nature and `,construction of this cutter is such that it will readily 'l enges operate to cut a notch in the check by a piercing and shearing action which does not have a tendency to dull the cutter as is true with the ordinary punching means.

This construction provides a very practical check cutting means, the cutter being tully protected to prevent the user .trom being injured while carrying the same.
The member 21 is provided with gage stops 23 tor the checks, for limiting the depth of the cut of the tongue 16. Said stops are stamped itrom the inclined member 22 and arel positioned adjacent the sides and near the pointed end 19 of the tongue. rThese stops perform a double function, being adapted to 'form abutments tor the lower end ot the pad of checks to prevent any downward movement ot the same, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 5.
l/Vhen the tongue 16 is returned to its normal position the pointed end is positioned between the stops 23 and the inclined mem-- ber 22 so that the same will protect the sharp end of the tongue in order that no portions thereof will be exposed upon which'the operator can be accidentally injured from contact therewith.
The upper end oit the base plate 12 is formed with an aperture 25 by means of which. it maybe attached to a hookv 241 for carrying the same by the user so as to be ready at hand when needed. l
The simplicity of the design ot my holder together with the practical nature of the same provides a very desirable check holder and cutting means formed from a single piece of material which can be manufactured at a reasonable cost. l

1. A device of the class described formed i said inclined member extending in front of said tongue when in released position to provide a guard to conceal the same.
2. A. ticket shearing device comprisingv a base plate, a shearing tongue projecting abovesaid plate having a pointed end formed with cutting edges, and a member extending upwardly at an oblique angle having a notch formed With cutting edges With which the end of the tongue is adapted to cooperate to form a shearing device.
A device of the class described including a ticket notching means formed from sheet material comprising a cutting tongue and an angularly disposed portion extending in front of said tongue and being provided 10 With shearing edges to cause said tongue to cut with a shearing action, and said angulariy disposed portion provided with guard means in front of the point of said cutter.
