AUTOMOBILE ORNAMENT.
Application filed August '7, 1923. Serial No. 656,211.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EARL M. SQANLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile Ornaments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ornaments for automobiles and most particularly to ornaments designed to display the initials of the owner of a motor vehicle, in the form of. a monogram, at the front of the radiator of the same.
It is an object of my invention to provide a monogram of the above described type, composed of two or more separate metal characters which are interwoven and rigidly fastened together at their points of intersection.
A further object of the invention is to provide a monogram thus constructed, with simple and convenient means for fastening it to the honeycomb web at the front of an automobile radiator, and still another object of the invention is to'produce a monogram of the above described character which is composed of metal characters of uniform proportions.
By the use of my invention, two or more letters of an alphabet may be quickly combined into a monogram of artistic and ornamental appearance, which is readily fastened at the front of an automobile by. the means provided for that purpose.
It is a salient feature of the invention that the letters combined into the monogram are fastened together without the use of frames, cross bars or other extraneous supports, and therefore, are similar in appearance to the costly monograms cut out of a single metal plate, at present in use.
The letters employed in producing the monograms of my invention, are separately cut or stamped from sheets of metal of suflicient pliability to permit of the letters being interwoven into any desired combination and they may be nickel-plated, silvered,
oxidized or otherwise finished to enhance their ornamental appearance. I
An embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings in the several views of which like parts are.
similarly designated and in which Figure 1 represents a face view of a monogram made of the letters G, M and E,in accordance with my invention;
' Figure 2, a reverse view of the same, and Figure 3, a section taken on the line 3-3, Figure 1.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, the three characters G, -M- and R- which as stated before, are made separately of pliable sheet metal, have been designated by the reference numeral 5.
The letters .are interwoven bybending parts of one'over the edges of intersecting parts of another and they are rigidly fastened'together at their points of intersection by patches of solder 6. .This method of connecting the letters is preferred by reason of its simplicity, easeof application and cheapness, but I desire it understood that other fastening means such as rivets or the like, may be used within the spirit and scope of the invention.
The means for fastening the monogram to an automobile, consistin the construction shown inthe drawings, of slender wires T of pliable metal one end of which is fastened at the back of the monogram by patches of solder 8.
To fasten the monogram to the radiator, the wires are inserted through meshes of the honeycomb web thereof and they are bent upon the rear surface of the web after the monogram has been drawn against the front of the same.
It will be apparent that while the ornaments constructed in accordance with my I initials.
The letters are interwoven and fastened together in the manner hereinbefore de scribed, in a few minutes and the ornaments may thus be produced at a very low cost.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat- 1. 'An automobile ornament of the character described, comprising; monogram composed'of a plura-llty of termlnally'v free interwoven characters made separately. of pliable metal and fastened together at their points of intersection.
2. An automobile ornament of the. character described, comprising a monogram composed of a'plurality of-termina-lly free interwovencharacters made separately of pliable metal and soldered together at& their points of intersection.
3.- An automobile ornament of the character described, comprising a monogram composed of a plurality of terminally free interwoven characters made separately. of
pliable metal andfastenedtogether at their acter described, comprising a monogram= composedzof a pluralltyof'termlnally free interwoven characters made separately of pliable metal andfastened together at their points; of. intersection, and means for securing. the ornament to an automobile or the like, fastened at the back of the monogram.
5'. An automobile ornament of the character described, comprising a monogram composed of a plurality of terminally free interwoven characters made separately of pliable metal and fastened together at their points of intersection, and means for securing the ornament to anautomobile or. the like, fastened by solder, at the back-of the monogram. 4 a 6. Any automobile ornament of the character described, comprising a monogram.-
composed of' a plurality of interwoven characters made separately of pliable metal In testimony whereof I have aflixed signature:
EARL M. SCANLAN.
