Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 is used to designate the corner angles or members of a suitable frame having front and rear horizontal bars 2 and also pairs of front and rear vertically disposed channels 3. Extending from front to rear of the frame and having their ends rigidly secured to the vertically disposed channels 3 are two pairs of parallel angles l and between each pair of angles 4: I have pivotally mounted a plurality of rockers 6 having arms 7 connected thereto and offset to wards the center of the main frame, as disclosed in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The rock crs 6 and arms 7 connected thereto are arranged in opposite pairs each pair of said arms being connected to a transversely arranged rod 8 which forms the beating element. When these arms 7 are moved to the uppermost position where the rods 8 engage the lower side of a mattress 9, hereinafter more fully described, the said rods 8 or beating elements are equally spaced.
The rockers 6 are connected by means of suitablelinks 11 to crank levers 12 also pivotally mounted between the angles 4 and are connected pivotally to stems of cam straps 14L rotatably mounted upon cams 16 on a lower power shaft 1? whereby rotation of said shaft 17 will cause said cams 16 to rock the rockers 6, through the medium of the links 11; and thereby impart a reciprocating movement to the arms 7 and rods or beating elements 8 on the free ends I of said arms 7. I
The ends of the rods 8 are curved to prevent damage to the ticking of the mattress 9 or to the resilient mattress support hereinafter more fully described.
Also extending from the front to the rear of the main frame I have provided a second pair of angles 18 resting upon and rigidly secured to the horizontal members 2 hereinbefore described, to which angles 18 I have connected what I term transverse lofting bars 19, said bars 19 being arranged alternately with the bars or beating elements 8 when said bars 8 are in their upper most positions, the front and rear bars 19 being preferably straight and the succeeding bars 19 each being a little more arcuate or curved toward the center of the machine, the innermost bars being more greatly curved or arcuate than the intermediate bars so that the greatest distance between said bars and the mattress 9 directly over them will be greatest at the approximate center of said mattress 9, as disclosed in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, the purpose of which will hereinafter be more fully set forth.
The resilient circular mattress support 23 is provided with interlaced webs 26 which are in turn secured at their opposite ends to the circular mattress support 23 by means of suitable springs 27, as disclosed in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 ofthe drawings. By means of this rotatable circular resilient mattress support mattress 9 may be supported above the lower "beating elements or rods 8 and as said rods are reciprocated and strike against the lower surfaces of the webs 26 the blow will be imparted to the bottom of the mat tress 9 upon said webbing 26, and as said webbingis flexible and resilient it will be the same, in effect as if the bars 8 struck the lower surface of the mattress 9 itself.
The mattress support 23 is moved inwardly until the rear end thereof strikes a stop pin 28 which will position the mattress 9 directly in correct operative position relatively to the beating elements.
The power shaft 17 is rotatably mounted within suitable bearings 31 and is provided at one end with a female clutch member 32 arranged to be engaged and rotated by means of a male clutch member 33 on a shaft 36 also mounted within a suitable bearing 37 and having flywheel driving pulley 38 on the end thereof, as disclosed in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The male clutch member 33 is operated to engage and disengage the female clutch member 32 by means of the usual lever 4L1 which extends forwardly and projects beyond the horizontal frame member 2 at the extreme right hand end of the front of the machine.
The right hand channel of the lower portion of the supporting frame 22 is provided with a spline or rod 4-2 having a projection l3 on the rear or inner end thereof. As the sliding frame 22 is withdrawn from operative relation to the beater elements 8 the side of the rod 42 engages the vert cal portion 46 of the latch 44 and thereby preventsamovement of said l'atchr44 which will permitthe'lever'41 to, be actuated to again connect the clutch members 32 and 33 and thereby preventing operation of the beaters whilesaidsupport is withdrawn fromoper'a 7 d p I V f upper end w th a bevel gear 83 which meshes tive r'elationto, said beating elements.

When. however, the support 22 is moved inwardly to an operative position and against the stop 28, the latch 14 may be moved to release the lever 41 so that the lower heating elements may be operated.
By moving the lever 106 through the medium of its projection 107 the shifting rods 102 and 92 are actuated to move the clutch collar 89 into engagement with the clutch portion 87 of the gear 8& and thereby rotate the shaft 85, and the various and several connecting shafts and gears to rotate the vertically disposed threaded rods in a direction which will lower the upper beating element frame 52 until it has attained the desired elevation with respect to the inattress 9 upon the resilient rotatable support 23.
Should the operator inadvertently neglect to release the lowering mechanism when the frame has reached the required level, the bracket 105 on the frame 52 will engage the lower stop 104: on the vertically disposed shift rod 102 and thereby move the same downwardly to disengage the clutch collar 89 from the clutch member 87 of the gear 84: and thereby automatically stop the said frame 52.
l t hen the shift roo 102 is moved upward to shift the clutch collar 91 into engagement with the clutch portion 88 of the gear 85 the bracket 105 will likewise engage the upper stop 103 on said rod 102 before the limit of movement of said frame 52 is reached and thereby actuate said rod 102 to disengage the said clutch collar 91 from the clutch portion 88 of the gear 86.
hen either collar 89 or 91 is thus disengaged, the tension of the springs 99 will operate to hold the levers 95 and 96 against the steps 97 and 98 respectively, on the main frame andthereby engage the stops or pins 93 and 9% of the shifting rod 92 and hold them in neutral or disengaged position, to prevent further rotation of the shaft 85 and tnereby prevent further movement of the frame 52.
When the upper beating elements have been moved to the correct position relatively to the mattress 9 the clutch levers ll and 78 are moved to cause their respective clutch members to engage and rotate the shafts 17 and 6t and thereby actuate the upper and lower beating elements 57 and 8 respectively to reciprocate and deliver a succession of rapid blows to the mattress 9 and on opposite sides thereof and at alternate points on said opposite sides, thereby rapidly corrugating the mattress as disclosed in Fig. 3 of the drawings. which operation will uniformly distribute the stutfing within the mattress. As these blows or strokes are not vertical or lateral to the mattress 9 but move arcuately it is evident that said blows will tend to move the stuffing within the mattress and as the rotatable resilient support is rotated the position of the mattress 9 thereon is changed relatively to the direction and position of said strokesuntil a uniform distribution of stuffing within the mattress has been effected. i
After a uniform distribution has been thus effected, the lever etl'is moved to disengage the clutch member 33 from the'clutch member 32 which rotates the lower'sh'aft '17, thereby preventing further operation of the lower beating elements 8. I

As the said lofti ng rods 19 are arcuate and so positioned that the greatest distance between said'rods and the flexible bottom of the supporting frame23 is at the approximate center of said frame 23 andthe mattress 9 thereon, it is obvious that when the pressure of the upper beating elements is withdrawn, the resulting rebound imparted to the mattress 9 by the flexible webs 26 and springs 27 attached thereto will be greater at the center of said mattress 9 than at other portions thereof, with the resu'l t'thatthe stuffing within the mattress 9 will be lofted toward the center of saidmattress.
This is a desired condition in mattresses as more stuffing is required at the center than at other portions thereof.
The, clutch lever 78 is then actuated, to disengage the upper beating 'elementsfrom the power, the lever 106 is actuated'to raise the frame 52 upwardly away from themattress and the support 22 is moved to withdraw the mattre-ss 9 from between the beating elements. k

A mattress beating machine comprising upper and lower beating elements; means for resiliently and rotatably supporting a mattress between said beating elements whereby various portions of both sides of a mattress may be exposed to the action of said beating elements simultaneously; means for adjusting one of said beating elements relatively to the mattress; means for operating either beating element independently of the other; and lofting means arranged to support the under side of the mattress when the upper beating element only is operating whereby said mattress may be lofted.
15. A mattress beating machine compris ing a pair of independently operable beating elements arranged to engage and beat both sides of a mattress simultaneously; means for resiliently supporting a mattress between said beating elements; and lofting means for lofting the mattress when only one of said beating elements is engaging said mattress. A mattress beating machine comprising a pair of beating elements arranged to engage and beat both sides of a mattress simultaneously; resilient means for support i11 a mattress between said beating elements whereby both sides of said mattress may be engaged and beaten by saidelements; means for operating either beating element independently of the other; and lofting means arranged to support one side of the mattress when the beating element on the other side thereof is being actuated.

A mattress beating machine comprising upper and lower heating elements; resilient supporting means arranged to support a mattress between said elements whereby both sides of said mattress may be engaged and beaten simultaneously; means for operating either one of the beating elements in dependently of the other; and lofting means arranged below the mattress and arranged to support and loft the said mattress when the upper beating element only is being operated; and stripping means arranged to strip the mattress from said upper beating elements.
19. A mattress beating machine comprising upper and lower beating elements; a slidable support arranged to resiliently sup port a mattress between said beating elements to expose both sides thereof to said beating elements simultaneously and to move said mattress between and away from said beating elements; means for operating either of the beating elements independently of the other; means for moving the upper beating elements relatively to the mattress; and means for preventing operation of the lower beating element while the slidable support is out of operative position rela tively to the lower beating element.

The combination with a mattress beating machine comprising beating elements, of aslidable support arranged to move a mattress into and out of operative relation with said beating elements; and means for preventing operation of said beating elements to prevent engagement of the same with the mattress while the latter is being moved into or out of said operative relation...
21. A mattress beating machine comprising a lower stationary beating element; a vertically movable upper beating element; a
sliding resilient support arranged to move a mattress to be beaten into and out of operative relation with said beating elements; and means for preventing withdrawal of said support while said beating elements are in operation.

A mattress beating machine comprisinga suitable frame; a lower beating element mounted within the lower portion of said frame vertically disposed threaded rods mounted within the upper portion of said frame; an upper beating element mounted upon the threaded rods whereby said upper element may be adjusted vertically when said threads are rotated; a rotatable resilient mattress support slidably mounted upon the frame and between the upper and lower beating elements and arranged to support a mattress to expose both sides thereof simultaneously to the action of said upper and lower beating elements; means for operating either beating element independently of the other; means for rotating the vertically disposed threaded rods to adjust the upper'beating elements relatively to the mattress means for preventing operation of the lower beating element when the mattress support is out of operative position relatively to said lower beating element; and stripping means for stripping the mattress from the upper beat ing element;

A mattress beating machine comprising a suitable frame; a lower beating element mounted within the lower portion of said frame; vertically disposed threaded rods mounted within the upper portion of said frame; an upper beating element mounted upon the threaded rods whereby said upper element may be adjusted vertically when said threads are rotated; a rotatable resilient mattress support slidably mounted upon the frame and between the upper and lower beating elements and arranged to support a mattress to expose both sides thereof simultaneously to the action of said upper and lower beating elements; means for operating either heating element independently of the other; means for rotating the vertically disposed threaded rods to adjust the upper beating element relatively to the mattress; means for preventing operation of the lower beating element when the mattress support is out of operative position relatively to said lower beating element; and stripping means for stripping the mattress from the upper beating element; and lofting means for lofting the mattress when the upper beating element only is being operated.

A mattress beating machinecomprising a resilient support arranged to support a mattress to expose both sides thereof simultaneously tothe action of heating elements; beating elements arranged on both sides of said support and mattress thereon, said elements comprising parallel bars arranged alternately on opposite elements whereby a mattress may be corrugated successively during the heating process to uniformly distribute stuffing within the mattress; means for operating either heating element independently of the other; and lofting means comprising parallel supporting bars arranged alternately with the bars of one element and opposite the bars of the opposite element, each successive inner bar being arranged farther from the mattress at the center than the adjacent outer bar whereby the support thus afforded will be farther from said mattress at the center than at the edges of said mat- "tress whereby said mattress may be lofted to loft stuffing toward the center of the mattress when the bars of the opposite beating element only are being operated.
28. A mattress beating machine comprising upper and lower beating elements com prisingparallel bars, the bars of the upper element being positioned alternately with respect to the bars of the lower beating element; means for operating either beating element independently of the other element; a resilient mattress support arranged between the beating elements and adapted to simultaneously expose both sides of a mattress thereon to the action of said beating elements; a stripping means arranged between the bars of the upper element and arranged to strip the mattress therefrom; and a lofting means comprising arouate parallel bars arranged below the support and between the bars of the lower heating element said bars increasing in distance from the mattress toward the center thereof whereby a greater rebound may be imparted by the resilient support to the mattress thereon 10 when beaten by the upper beating element only to loft the stufling within said mattress.
