DANIEL A. B. BAILEY AND CHARLES F. DEAN, OF ST. JOI-INSBURY, VT.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-POUNDERS.
tipecification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,970, dated April 21, 1874; ap lication filed September 8, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DANIEL A. B. BAILEY and CHARLES F. DEAN, of St. J ohnsbury, in the county of Caledonia and in the State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Clothes -Pounder; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
()ur invention relates to that class of washing-machines known as pounders; and it consists in a hemispherical head with flaring rim, provided with interior partitions, and the head provided with an exterior socket for the insertion of the handle, and containing a valve to allow the escape of the air when the pounder is pressed down, and prevent its return when it is raised up, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of our wash-pounder, and Fig.2 is a bottom view of the same.
A represents a hemispherical head of any suitable dimensions, provided with a flaring rim, B, of any desired width. This rim is provided with interior bars or partitions c 0 across the mouth or bottom, and extending up into the machine far enough to make them of the required strength, and leaving the upper part of the head undivided. To the upper side, in the center ofthe head, is attached a socket, D, having perforations a a in its sides. This socket is for two purposesone to hold the handle E, and the other is to form a cage for a valve, 1), situated on the top of the head A. Around the socket D are ribs or wings G G, forming braces to strengthen the socket. The valve 1) on top of the machine allows the escape of the air when the pounder is pressed down, and prevents its return when the pounder is raised up, so as to form a suction through the clothes, which extracts the dirt rapidly and thoroughly.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The within-described wash-pounder, con sisting of the hemispherical head A with flaring rim B, interior bars or partitions C C, exterior socket D with perforations a a and valve 1), and the handle E, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands and seals this 25th day of August, 1873.
