Be it known that I, Fenorlsion E. WiselL-iNN a citizen of the United States, residing at Highland Park, in the county of ll ayne and State of liflichigan have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Intake and Exhaust Valve for lnternal-Combustion En ines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clearand exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple compact and efiicient combination single stem valve adapted to perform the functions of controlling both the intake and exhaust with relation to the cylinder of an internal combustion or explosion engine under conditions insuring the utmost ac curacy of operation and functioning of the parts; and with. these objects in view the invention consists ina constructioin combination of relation of parts of which a typical embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a sectional view of a valve mechanism embodying the invent-ion the valves being shown in their normal or seated position,
Figure 2 is a view at right angles to the plate of Figure 1 to show the inlet and ex haust connection,
Figures 3 and 4; are views similar to Figure 1 showing the positions of the parts respectively during the exhaust and intake strokes of the piston,
Figures 5 and 6 are detail views detached respectively of the double valve head and the piston valve.
The structure embodies essentially a substantia-lly cylindrical casing 10 having a removable head 11, a poppet valve head 12 having a main valve disk 13 for which there is provided a seat 14 interiorly of the port 15 said poppet valve having a stem 16, a piston valve 17 for which there is provided an exterior valve seat 18 around the port 15 and which is provided with a feed chamber 19 controlled by an auxiliary valve disk 20 forming a part of the poppet valve head a seat 21 being arranged for the reception of said auxiliary valve head. In addition to the foregoing there is provided a safety valve 22 for seating at 23 to be actuated by compression in the cylinder or in the event Serial No. 537,820.

The piston valve is provided with packing means such as the expansion ring 33 so that the upper portion of the casing by which the valve actuating springs are housed may be filled with a lubricating oil and therefore may operate entirely in oil to prevent overs heating and minimize friction, and in this connection a water jacket 34 may also be disposed to enclose the inner portion of the casing adj acentto the valve elementsproper.
The exhaust chamber 35 which is arranged in communication with the cylinder when the m valve d sk 3 s u seated i adep ed for communication with the usual exhaust manifold and the piston valve is provided with a lateral opening or port 36 whereby communication may he established between the intake manifold and the feed chamber 19.
In operation the stem is actuated to unseat the main valve disk 13 in order to permit the exhaust of products of combustion through the chamber 35, the piston valve during the exhaust stroke of the cylinder piston being held repressed or in the position indicated in Figure 3 with the safety valve seated to cut off communication with the feed chamber, Upon the commencement of the suction stroke of the piston the piston valve advances under the impulse of the spring 28 and seats at 18 to establish communication between the cylinder and the feed chamber 19, the safety valve being unseated unless there is a back fire or premature explosion in the cylinder In practice the piston valve may be advanced slightlliwith the poppet valve to occupy an intermediate position during the exhaust stroke of the piston and then further advanced by an additional movement of the valve stem during the suction stroke to effect a substantial seating of the piston valve upon the seat 18,-tl1ere being a sufficient difference between the tensions of the springs 24 and 28 to insure a proper positioning of the auxiliary valve disk 20 and the piston valve during these operations,
Thus in operation the main valve acts as a universal or common cylinder valve and the piston valve as an exhaust cut oil valve while the auxiliary valve serves as a feed valve through the movement of which with relation to the piston valve the feed chamber is put into communication with the cylinder during the suction stroke while the safety valve is interposed between the feed valve and the feed chamber to serve in'the event of an emergency to prevent communicating tire to the fuel source.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 2-- 1. A combined intake and exhaust valve structure including a. cylinder, a piston inlet valve operablein said cylinder, said cylinder having a port which communicates with the engine cylinder and an exhaust passageway capable of communication with the port, said piston valve being adapted to seat at one side of the port, a main valve movable independently of the piston valve adapted to seat against the other side of said port, an auxiliary valve movable with the main valve on which the piston valve is adapted to seat, a safety valve movable independently of said valve through back pressure and means extending inwardly from the piston valve to form a seat for the safety valve! 2. A combined intake and exhaust val e structure including a cylinder a piston inlet valve operable in said cylinder, said cylinder having a port which communicates with the engine cylinder and an exhaust passageway capable of communication with the port, a main valve movable independently of the piston valve adapted to seat against the other side of said port an auxiliary valve movable with the main valve on which the piston valve isadapted to seat, a safety valve movable independently of said valve through back pressure and means extending inwardly from the piston valve to form a seat for the safety alve and the first mentioned seat for the inlet valve being disposed inwardly of the annular inner side wall oi the cylinder.
3, A. combined intake and exhaust valve having a casing provided with a cylinder, said cylinder forming a shoulder at its outer end, the casing having an exhaust passageway at the inner end of the cylinder and the port extending from said passageway, a piston valve operable in said cylinder, the casing about said port extending inwardly beyond the inner annular side wall. of the cylinder and providing a seat for engagement by said piston valve a main valve having a seat at the other side of said port to the piston valva an auxiliary valve movable with the main valve to seat against the piston valve when the latter is disengaged from the first mentioned seat, a stem extending from theretained valve and movable through and independently of the piston valve, an abutment on the stem above the piston valve, said piston valve having a pocket. an expansive coil spring engaging said abutment and disposed in said pocket. an expansive coil spring stronger than said coil spring seated on said shoulder and extending above said abutment, an abutment on the stem above the first abutment a d engaged by the second mentioned spring.
